It took nearly 60 years for the mainstream audience to learn and digest the impact of the Black sports journalist on the American sports landscape.

In the Disney-movie “42,” detailing Jackie Robinson’s breaking of baseball’s color barrier in 1947, Robinson bonded with a journalist named Wendell Smith, who served as a guide, mentor and liaison for the baseball player during his travel journey with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Smith not only covered Robinson’s ground-breaking excursion into a sport that had proudly prohibited and disavowed Blacks from playing Major League Baseball, he became Robinson’s trusted colleague, gaining access to stories and insights …

This paper critiques a dominant narrative in the history of Irish television, which typically equate television’s arrival with the launch of RTÉ in 1961 and interpret its development through a state-centred, modernisation framework. Drawing on life-story interviews with people who experienced television in Ireland during the 1950s and 1960s, the research challenges methodological nationalism by foregrounding memory as a source. It reveals how television was an uncertain status object that carried meanings of pride, shame, discipline, and cultural value. Theoretically informed by Bourdieu, Halbwachs, and Inglis, the paper analyses recollection as practical social action. Early television consumption was mediated by …

The suborder Scorpaenoidei is among the most speciose fish taxa of the World Ocean, including the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Most adult scorpionfishes are benthic and have a pelagic juvenile phase. Although the species descriptions and distributions of adult scorpionfishes within the GoM are well documented, their juvenile forms are largely undescribed. Due to the poorly resolved taxonomic status of juvenile scorpionfishes, their assemblage dynamics have not been accurately assessed. Glucose monitoring technologies allow users to monitor glycemic fluctuations (e.g., current glucose levels in their blood, also known as glycemia). This is particularly important for individuals who suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes. Traditional self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) devices require the user to prick their finger and extract a blood drop to measure the blood glucose based on chemical reactions with the blood. Unlike traditional glucometer devices, non-invasive continuous glucose monitoring (NICGM) devices aim to solve these issues by consistently monitoring users’ blood glucose levels (BGL) and without invasively acquiring a sample. Manganites have shown potential application as magnetic refrigerants due to the exhibition of near room temperature magnetocaloric effect. High relative cooling power (RCP) values and the easy tunability of magnetic phase transition temperature (Tc), magnetic entropy change (?Sm), and RCP opens up a lot of possibilities for exploring better magnetocaloric materials. Reported literature shows doped manganites and composites with significant improvement in magnetocaloric properties. In this work, we have synthesized (1-x) La0.7Ca0.3MnO3-xMO (x = 2.5%, 5%; M = Ni, Cu, Co), magnetite-metal oxide nanocomposites using a simple autocombustion method. Despite being a critical component of an individual’s cultural identity religion and spirituality have not historically been included in multicultural counseling curricula. Research suggests that there are many benefits to addressing within the counseling relationship, and clients desire to do so. This study aims to determine how and to what extent religion and spirituality are being included in cultural diversity courses within CACREP accredited, master’s level counseling programs. A mixed-methods content analysis was conducted to review syllabi, required journal articles, assignments, and a representative sample of required textbooks from seventy-four cultural diversity counseling courses within CACREP accredited programs. A Temporal Analysis Of The Microbiota And Biofouling Development On Artificial Substrates In The Port Everglades Inlet, Florida, Denise Swack

A pilot project was deployed in Port Everglades Inlet, Florida that aimed to evaluate the biofilm composing the microbiome on ecologically engineered artificial substrates used to build Coastal Marine Infrastructure. In April of 2017, an Articulated Concrete Block Mattress comprised of an ecological engineered concrete substrate and a standard smooth surface control substrates were compared. This study will provide a profile on the microbiome community on artificial substrates within Port Everglades Inlet on bio-enhancing concrete-based solutions in our Coastal Marine Infrastructure. To study the microbial community, the 16s rRNA technology was used in Illumina’s high-throughput DNA sequencing. Samples were collected …

Ethanol is the most commonly abused drug in the world. Alcohol consumption increases a number of health risks, morbidity and mortality, and chronic and acute diseases. Some health risks include high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, cancer, and can include mental health and social problems. Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to learning and memory problems, along with alcohol dependence. Introduction: Clostridiodes difficile (C. difficile) is a leading cause of healthcare associated infections (HAI) in the United States and responsible for an estimated incidence of 223,900 cases and 12,800 deaths per year^1,2.
