The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated conflict dynamics and humanitarian disasters around the world, including Syria, Yemen, and East Africa. Humanitarian efforts designed to address these dynamics and disasters are also falling prey to the fallout of COVID, most notably increases in psychological distress experienced by humanitarian workers (HW) operating on the front lines of humanitarian zones. Although the notion of sustainable peace requires acknowledging the role played by all actors, transitional processes around the world have inadequately addressed or completely ignored the direct and indirect participation of economic actors. In particular, Colombia's transitional justice regime left out corporations entirely. A skillshare between Colombian lawyers and US-based human rights attorneys showed some of the gaps that let corporations continue in impunity for profiting, benefiting from, or directly financing the conflict. Other than harming and deeply fracturing communities, the shortcomings of corporate accountability in post-conflict Colombia also leave land, rivers, and animals without redress. The global pandemic has transformed many structures, including the way in which human rights academics and practitioners carry out their work. This project is an example of human rights research using methods that can be applied remotely from any part of the world, and even replicated in other contexts or experiences.

The initiative is one of the projects from the Observatory on Disappearances and Impunity in Mexico led by Barbara Frey (University of Minnesota), Leigh Payne (Oxford University), and Karina Ansolabehere (UNAM-México), focused on the enforced disappearances crisis occurring in Mexico. The purpose of this project is to model and understand socio-legal responses to the spread of COVID-19—in particular, emergency measures that derogate from states’ human rights commitments. Derogation of human rights in response to COVID-19 is unprecedented, according to some experts (Scheinin 2020). This project investigates whether combinations of conditions, such as moderate human rights derogation in combination with strong health infrastructures, reduce degrees of virus transmission and promote prevention. Its preliminary findings indicate that suspension of some rights appears crucial to limiting COVID-19 infections, but suspension of many rights has limited impacts, raising questions for practices of human rights …

The results of dehumanising the Other can be catastrophic; exemplified by the extreme brutality of colonisation, the Holocaust and the current violence perpetrated against Palestinians. All carried out in the name of â we' the superior, humane against â them' the â inhumane', the â less than'. This thesis argues that the legal rights regime legitimises the creation of the inhuman â Other' and is thereby implicated in the continuation of the violence against â them'. Mobile genetic elements in microbial communities are mainly composed of plasmids, transposons and viruses. They are collectively referred to as the mobilome and serve as agents that facilitate horizontal gene transfer, which plays an important role in evolution and adaptation of microorganisms. In order to study the abundance and distribution of mobile genetic elements in different marine environments and to clarify whether certain environmental conditions could explain such distribution, sequence similarity searches using protein family signatures against diverse marine metagenomic datasets were used to determine the relative frequency of coding sequences associated with transposases, integrases, plasmids and viruses, or phages. …

The prison abolition movement encompasses a range of objectives and perspectives. While dismantling the carceral system may be the ultimate goal, incremental steps can be an important component of this long-term project. This Essay makes a case for the constitutional elimination of pretrial detention as one part of an incremental abolitionist agenda. The analysis pays particular attention to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s recent decision in Commonwealth v. Lougee, which illustrates some of the ways in which the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated preexisting injustices and inequities in the pretrial detention system. Color choices can be emotion-driven (Jonauskaite et al., 2019). Because there is evidence that the color shade - emotion association may develop through socialization and enculturation, the current purpose was to determine if color shade was associated with emotion in very young children (i.e., preschoolers) who have experienced lower levels of socialization / enculturation. Participants were read a story about a happy, sad, or angry character and were then asked to pick specific crayons to color a picture of the story character. In this thesis, we present an analysis of highly magnetized neutron stars â magnetarsâ , in search for high frequency oscillations in the recurrent emission from the soft gamma repeater SGR 1806-20, and we discuss the physical interpretation of these oscillations and its implications on the neutron star properties and structure. We present evidence for Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) in the recurrent outburst activity from the soft gamma repeater SGR 1806-20 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations. Layered silicate clays have been used for decades as filler materials to enhance mechanical and thermal properties of polymers. Recently, efforts have focused on separating the layers of the clay with the purpose of forming clay-polymer nanocomposites. Investigations have been addressing the enhancement of mechanical and thermal properties of these materials. In this study, 5wt% of commercial montmorillonite clay (Cloisite Na+) and organically-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) clays (Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 30B) were compounded with nylon6.
