Layered silicate clays have been used for decades as filler materials to enhance mechanical and thermal properties of polymers. Recently, efforts have focused on separating the layers of the clay with the purpose of forming clay-polymer nanocomposites. Investigations have been addressing the enhancement of mechanical and thermal properties of these materials. In this study, 5wt% of commercial montmorillonite clay (Cloisite Na+) and organically-modified montmorillonite (OMMT) clays (Cloisite 15A and Cloisite 30B) were compounded with nylon6. Nylon6/layered silicate nanocomposites were fabricated using melt compounding and solution compounding techniques. This thesis focuses on â communication for development' concepts and initiatives, in an attempt to, first, investigate the limits of the UN's perceived shift from a top-down to a bottom-up development approach, and secondly, to evaluate the degree and extent of the effectiveness of its communication efforts to achieve development results. This research seeks to investigate the impact and externalities of social capital in sixteen villages in El Bab district in Aleppo, Syria. El Bab villages are located in the North Eastern region, which has the largest agricultural sector in Syria, and the highest level of rural poverty. It is part of a region that faces various challenges, primarily due to the occurrence of droughts, depletion of natural resources, and changing state policies. Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infection causes around three quarters of worldwide chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Interferon and ribavirin combination therapy is not effective with all HCV genotypes, and has serious side effects that may result in discontinuation of treatment. The aim of our work is to design inhibitors against HCV envelope glycoprotein E2 to prevent its binding to CD81 surface receptor and the consequent viral entry into hepatocytes. Methane oxidation by microbial consortia contributes positively to the environment by decreasing methane emission to the atmosphere from different ecosystems. Aerobic methanotrophic bacteria are considered one of the main groups involved in methane oxidation. Brine pools are dynamic habitats for microbial cycling of carbon. Atlantis II Deep is the largest brine pool in the Red Sea. The pool is well known for its elevated temperature, salinity and methane concentration. This thesis analyzes the establishment of a zone, free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction (WMDFZ), in the Middle East. It argues that the proposed Middle East zone constitutes a normative regulatory strategy for promoting nonproliferation and disarmament in the region in support of broader, international nonproliferation and disarmament efforts. It addresses the subject of the zone through the lens of Martha Finnemore and Kathryn Sikkink’s norm life cycle model, which asserts that norms first emerge (norm emergence), then spread throughout a given population (norm cascade), and then become internalized as standard practice by members of the population …

Close to the entrance of Cairo’s legendary Tahrir Square, a tent adorned with the Syrian flag houses photographs of the brutality of 18 months of atrocities and casualties of the Syrian uprising. My proposed thesis will examine Syrians who migrated to Cairo fleeing the violence in Syria, where escalating battles between rebel forces and the Syrian army continue to push hundreds of thousands of Syrian civilians into Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq. This study focuses on the problem of slums or ‘ashwa’iyyat in Egypt and its placement on the public agenda. For this, the researcher studied the case of the development and upgrading project of ‘ashwa’iyyat Zeinhum which was implemented by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), an Egyptian non-governmental organization, for more than ten years from 1998 through 2009. How are counter-norms manufactured, and what are their components? Current literature on norm diffusion largely views the process as linearly progressive. In other words, norms progress towards greater inclusion. However, notable cases such as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s controversial use of traditional values in the UN Human Rights Council demonstrates a potential backlash to this progression. Building on our previous case study work of Russian anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and its spread to the United States, in this paper we examine the timing and content of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric using text analysis. The detention of migrants and asylum-seekers on administrative grounds is common practice in Germany and Austria. Administrative detention in migration settings mainly aims at facilitating deportation procedures but can also lead to deterrence. A definition for deterrence in pre-deportation detention settings is developed in this paper and applied to three German and three Austrian court cases. In this way, it is possible to show how deterrence occurs and what it looks like. Broad discretionary powers and insufficient training for law enforcement agents, such as the immigration police, as well as vague standards and procedures, play a role in the occurrence …

New wars are defined by their innate disposition to blur distinctions and human rights violations while structurally undermining the enjoyment of human rights. These wars are self-fueling human rights cataclysms that destroy society and its social contract by blurring the distinction between government, army and people. These characteristics prolong into what is perceived as post-conflict and blur the distinction between war and peace. The long-running controversy in international refugee law over the concept of safe third countries is particularly challenging when refugees migrate irregularly from urban settings. Conduct disorder and behavioral problems in children are the 6th most prominent childhood health disorder within the United States of America. Early recognition and interventions have shown to improve outcomes and reduce lifelong adult sequela. Evidence suggests that primary care providers are not confident or knowledgeable about identification and assessment of the disorder. The manuscript examines the prevalence, co-morbidities, trajectories, mortality risk and outcomes of conduct disorder. Health disparities and diagnostic stigma are also addressed. This chapter reports on a study that focuses on a special agent of change: the classroom teacher and their bilingual skills in preparation for the challenge of teaching in Spanish and English.
