Fall 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

The aim of this project was to analyze current fall prevention strategies, work and environmental-related barriers, and OT’s role in fall prevention in a hospital setting. Two online surveys consisting of quantitative questions (multiple-choice, select-all-that-apply, and Likert scale) with the option for open-ended answers were given to OT practitioners and nurses with inpatient experience. A total of 341 OT practitioners and 21 nurses completed the survey. The results were transferred to a password-protected Microsoft Excel document in preparation for analysis. The use of scientific web applications (SWApps) across biological and environmental sciences has grown exponentially over the past decades or so. Although quantitative evidence for such increased use in practice is scant, collectively, we have observed that these tools become more commonplace in teaching, outreach, and in science coproduction (e.g., as decision support tools). Despite the increased popularity of SWApps, researchers often receive little or no training in creating such tools. Medieval illuminated manuscripts have given scholars a window into the past in terms of material and purpose of art. Illuminations have been used as storytelling devices, materials for the church, and gifts for the wealthy. Some of the pieces illuminated were descriptions of science, the church, or morality stories. Illuminations have evolved through the centuries and reflect the era and location of which they are created, such as the evolution of borders and monograms. Here, you will see a description of the materials used, the purpose of the art, and some of the important meanings associated with illuminated manuscripts.

In this paper we compare recent efforts towards the constitutionalization of the right to water in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru to understand the opportunities and limitations related to the attempts to enhance access to piped water to the highest normative level. Peru passed a constitutional amendment in 2017 while Brazil and Colombia have seen much right-to-water activism but have not succeeded in passing such reforms. We explore the role of the existing domestic legal frameworks on drinkable water provision and water management towards the approval of constitutional amendments. This dissertation will discuss the history, musical and technical challenges, and preparation techniques for Anthony Plog’s Three Miniatures for tuba and piano. The document will begin with biographical information about both the composer and the tubist who premiered the piece, Daniel Perantoni, and historical information about the composition of the work. A thorough discussion of each movement will follow, including a short description of the form of each movement, challenges that the tubist will encounter, and techniques to overcome these challenges, including suggestions for supplemental material to improve technique. The present research reports the level of nitrate (NO₃^-), associated health risks and possible sources of contamination in groundwater from south India. Many samples (32%) are above or approaching the recommended level of NO₃^- for safe drinking water. The correlation analysis indicates different sources of NO₃^- contamination in different regions rather than a common origin. The isotopic measurements provide information about potential nitrogen sources contributing NO₃^- to the groundwater. Based on isotope analysis, the sources of NO₃^- in the groundwater of this region are likely to be from (a) …

Play therapy is a counseling approach used to process behaviors and emotions in children through interactive play. Due to the ratification of Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for fishing vessel personnel 1995 (STCW-F 1995), Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) should be incorporated in the curriculum of the Maritime Education Training (MET) institutions for fishing vessel industries. This study examined the curriculum of a Maritime English course in vocational higher education in Indonesia. Data were extracted from the SMCP document, past Maritime English examination papers of Certificate of Competency, and the current syllabus of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses. Dairy product preservation has evolved over thousands of years and has been a major benefit to humanity by creating stable, nutrient-dense food sources. Today the lactic acid bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri is important in preserving fermented dairy products through the production of the compound reuterin. Reuterin (1,3-propanediol) demonstrates antibiotic properties that prevent the fermentation of dairy products by undesirable bacteria. The purpose of this study is to determine if L. reuteri can produce 1,3-propanediol from a variety of carbon sources. Bacterial pathogens cause an estimated $60 million in damages every year in the USA. Little information is currently known about the bacterial bulb rot pathogens found in Utah that impact the onions. Surveys of onion fields and packing sheds have been conducted over the past two years to find symptomatic leaves and bulbs. Symptomatic onions were collected and cultured to grow bacterial strains and identified using PCR and DNA sequencing of the partial 16S gene. This empirical research study examined the use and effectiveness of the Hamburger Method, a writing strategy to teach organization and development similar to the famous, or perhaps infamous, Five-Paragraph Theme. This method of writing teaches students to write an introduction that includes their thesis (the top bun); three body paragraphs containing evidence (the meat and condiments); and then a conclusion that reverses the introduction and ends the essay (the bottom bun). Notably, the approach is generally introduced during elementary school as it has obvious appeal to children. This quantitative survey study explored the statistical significance of participation in the training Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) by early childhood educators in Mississippi, specifically K-3. The three outcome measures were teachers’ beliefs related to Mississippi’s K-3 Literacy Initiative: instructional practices, student learning outcomes, and barriers of technology use in literacy instruction. A total of 78 people completed the LETRS Survey, which consisted of a five-point scale. The southeastern United States is a freshwater turtle biodiversity hotspot, second only to southeastern Asia, and this region is inhabited by one of the largest freshwater turtles in the world: the alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). This species was heavily harvested from the 1960’s to the 1980’s for the turtle soup industry, apparently contributing to substantial, range-wide population declines. These declines, coupled with anthropogenic impacts on riverine and floodplain habitats, have led to M. temminckii being petitioned for federal listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act; it is currently under review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service …
