Impact Of Growth Media And Pressure On The Diversity And Antimicrobial Activity Of Isolates From Two Species Of Hexactinellid Sponge, Matthew J. Koch, Poppy J. Hesketh-Best, Gary Smerdon, Philip J. Warburton, Kerry Howell, Mathew Upton

School of Biomedical Sciences

Access to deep-sea sponges brings with it the potential to discover novel antimicrobial candidates, as well as novel cold- and pressure-adapted bacteria with further potential clinical or industrial applications. In this study, we implemented a combination of different growth media, increased pressure and high-throughput techniques to optimize recovery of isolates from two deep-sea hexactinellid sponges, Pheronema carpenteri and Hertwigia sp., in the first culture-based microbial analysis of these two sponges. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing for isolate identification, we found a similar number of cultivable taxa from each sponge species, as well as improved recovery of morphotypes from P. carpenteri …

Comparison Of Quality And Production By Different Silage Making Methods Of Barley Cultivated In The Paddy After Rice Harvest, J. S. Shin, E. B. Yoon, M. S. Park

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of this study was to compare whether the productivity and production cost of whole crop barley was affected by silage making methods at early bloom stage in the rice field. In nutritive value, quality and palatability of silage, baled silage making method was a little higher than that of crushed silage making. On the other hand, in terms of dry matter and total digestible nutrient (TDN) production cost, proper work capacity at about 15 ha or more was desirable when making baled silage. In this case, the estimated dry matter production cost and TDN cost per ha was …

Aerobic Stability Of Grass Silage Mixed With A Range Of Concentrate Feedstuffs At Feed-Out, P. O’Kiely, M. Clancy, E. M. Doyle

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Mixing supplementary concentrates with silage at feed-out could shorten aerobic stability or increase the rate or extent of aerobic deterioration of silage. This experiment quantified such possible effects by twelve contrasting feedstuffs. Four samples (each 6 kg) of unwilted, precision-chop, well preserved grass silage (216 g dry matter (DM) kg-1 and pH 4.0) were incubated at 20oC for 6 days in polystyrene containers alone or with the addition of 400 g (solid ingredients were milled) of wheat grain, barley grain, maize grain, molasses beet pulp, citrus pulp, molasses, soybean meal, maize gluten, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal, dry …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Escherichia coli can cause health problems in humans and livestock. It is frequently found in faeces and soil, both of which can contaminate grass harvested for silage-making. To determine the survival of E. coli 0157:H7 during ensilage, and its influence on ensilage, unwilted precision-chop grass was ensiled in laboratory silos with the following additive treatments: (a) no additive, (b) E. coli 0157:H7 (Ec - non-infectious strain, at log10 4.5 colony forming units (cfu) g-1), formic acid (FA), and (d) Ec + FA. Silos were stored at 15oC. Three silos per treatment were opened on days …

Interpreting Egypt's January 25th Through The Ideology Of Revolution, Brian Keckeisen Dec 2021

Interpreting Egypt's January 25th Through The Ideology Of Revolution, Brian Keckeisen

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The events that began on January 25, 2011 were quickly labeled revolutionary by actors, critics and other media. This thesis unpacks the assumptions that underlie such a characterization, critiquing in turn the concept of revolution as a distinctly modern conceptualization that collapses time and space. The author argues that the French revolution was the first historical iteration of such an event that was understood through the contemporaneous ideology of revolution, showing how actors came to understand themselves as historical agents. He then selects a few works that are representative of revolutionary discourse in Egypt during the period widely identified as …

Previous research work highlighted the relation between political and social violence or the relation between social and domestic violence with little attention …

Mental Health In Italy: Systems, Stigma, And Impact Of Covid-19, Charley Nyzio Dec 2021

Mental Health In Italy: Systems, Stigma, And Impact Of Covid-19, Charley Nyzio

CISLA Senior Integrative Projects

In 1978, Italy became the first European nation to radically change its mental healthcare system. Psychiatric hospitals were shut down, and a community-based publicly-funded system of mental healthcare took its place. This reform sought to restore dignity to those with mental illnesses through rehabilitation and increased participation in the community and daily activities. Though characteristics of marginalization and exclusion were relatively eliminated, covert stigmas surrounding mental illness remain a persisting problem. This review seeks to 1) evaluate the historical progression of mental health reform as well as the effectiveness of the current system of mental healthcare in Italy 2) explore …

Concertina For 12 Musicians, Michael Boss Dec 2021

Concertina For 12 Musicians, Michael Boss

Music Theses and Dissertations

There is ample repertoire that demonstrates bitonality and polytonality. Composers like Bartok used bitonality in his piano piece Mikrokosmos. Within neo-classicalism, Stravinsky used an aggressive and biting bitonality in his most famous work, The Rite of Spring.

But these techniques are not exclusive to the orchestral or chamber music idioms. Jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus was no stranger to executing these schemes within the improvisational work Zoo-Bab-Da-Oo-Ee, a simple blues tune he wrote early in the development of his musical canon. Over the course of the piece, the harmonic tissue becomes thematic. It is common practice within this …

Psycholinguistic Features Of Successful Transformation Of Engineering Thinking In Speech, Olena Tyron, Svitlana Korieshkova

International Maritime Lecturers' Association (IMLA) 2021 Joint Conference With IMEC32, ICERS15 and INSLC21

In this article, we try to answer the question of what makes it difficult for future engineers to express their ideas on technical topics in oral speech. The theoretical basis of the organizational procedure of the study was the concept, according to which a comprehensive description of the professional linguistic personality can be conducted on the verbal (professional speech) and cognitive (professional picture of the world) levels. We studied future engineers’ thinking patterns and found out which parts of speech were their first associations in technical, business, and everyday communication. The purpose of the study was to identify the fundamental …

Conductive Stimuli-Responsive Coordination Network Linked With Bismuth For Chemiresistive Gas Sensing, Aylin Aykanat, Christopher G. Jones, Evan Cline, Robert M. Stolz, Zheng Meng, Hosea M. Nelson, Katherine A. Mirica

New Hampshire EPSCoR

This paper describes the design, synthesis, characterization, and performance of a novel semiconductive crystalline coordination network, synthesized using 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) ligands interconnected with bismuth ions, toward chemiresistive gas sensing. Bi(HHTP) exhibits two distinct structures upon hydration and dehydration of the pores within the network, Bi(HHTP)-α and Bi(HHTP)-β, respectively, both with unprecedented network topology (2,3-c and 3,4,4,5-c nodal net stoichiometry, respectively) and unique corrugated coordination geometries of HHTP molecules held together by bismuth ions, as revealed by a crystal structure resolved via microelectron diffraction (MicroED) (1.00 Å resolution). Good electrical conductivity (5.3 × 10–3 S·cm–1) promotes the utility of this material …
