Generally, children’s materials in early literacy are not well represented in terms of culture, especially for bilingual and Latinx children. For example, many alphabet books include the translation of the alphabet in Spanish and English; however, these materials often do not include the translation of the alphabet in a cultural context. Instead, they often separate the two languages and create a disconnect between the two for bilingual children. Graphic communication is a significant area of concern in this case, as the use of typography, composition, and color can greatly impact how the reader processes the information being communicated.

3d Bouldering Project, Joseph Robison

Liberal Arts and Engineering Studies

Many indoor rock climbers struggle to make the transition from indoor to outdoor bouldering due to differences in route visualization. This project applies photogrammetry to create 3D scans of outdoor holds with accurate measurements and textures to improve climber visualization. The measurements were then mapped onto a Tension Board 1 simulation. Six climbers were divided into control and simulation groups to test effectiveness. Results showed that confidence and perception of outdoor ability were increased in the simulation group. Performance outcomes were approximately equal between both groups. These findings suggest that visualization tools can enhance mental preparation for outdoor climbing.

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability globally, with sub-Saharan Africa, bearing the greatest burden. Tanzania has only one active stroke registry, limiting evidence-based care and policy development. We aimed to expand the registry into a multi-centre study across eight major tertiary hospitals to generate baseline data for a national stroke registry.

Methods: From January to August 2024, we analysed de-identified data from adults (≥18 years) admitted with a World Health Organisation defined stroke. Data collected included demographics, risk factors, imaging, and in-hospital mortality. Logistic regression identified predictors of mortality.

One in 25 deaths worldwide is related to liver disease, and often with multiple hepatosplenic conditions. Yet, little is understood of the risk factors for hepatosplenic multimorbidity, especially in the context of chronic infections. We present a novel Bayesian multitask learning framework to jointly model 45 hepatosplenic conditions assessed using point-of-care B-mode ultrasound for 3155 individuals aged 5-91 years within the SchistoTrack cohort across rural Uganda, where chronic intestinal schistosomiasis is endemic. We identify distinct and shared biomedical, socioeconomic, and spatial risk factors for individual conditions and hepatosplenic multimorbidity, and introduce methods for measuring condition dependencies as risk factors. Background Kaposi sarcoma is a malignant vascular neoplasm caused by human herpesvirus-8. It is mostly seen in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or organ transplants. Cutaneous and mucosal Kaposi sarcoma manifestation is common; however, Kaposi sarcoma may involve the visceral organs. Iatrogenic or drug-induced Kaposi sarcoma may develop in immunocompromised patients undergoing immunosuppressive medication. It is quite uncommon for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases on immunosuppressive medication to develop intestinal Kaposi sarcoma. This report has been prepared by the Compensation Working Group (WG) to provide advice to the Minister for Fisheries on improving Western Australia’s (WA) fisheries compensation processes under two key legislative frameworks:

• Fisheries adjustment schemes, under the Fisheries Adjustment Scheme Act 1987
• (FAS Act), and 
• Statutory compensation under Fishing and Related Industries Compensation (Marine Reserves) Act 1997 (FRICMA).

This work has been undertaken as a precursor to the larger scale adjustment and compensation processes that will be required as part of the implementation of several marine parks throughout the Kimberley and South Coast of WA.

This study examines Geristoba, the Saint George feast historically celebrated around the Church of Saint George in Geri (Shida Kartli, Georgia) and its related sanctuary in Arbo. Drawing on the Chronicle of Geri (compiled by Deacon Iakob Lomouri), 19th–20th-century ethnographic accounts (S. Makalatia), historical notes (A. Garsevanishvili, Z. Chichinadze), and period press reports (Tsnobis Purtseli, Mtskemsi), the article reconstructs the site’s foundation traditions—attributed to King Pharsman and later royal patronage under Queen Tamar—alongside the ritual calendar and practices. This article examines the effectiveness of intensive case management (ICM) as a rehumanizing framework for supporting racialized individuals transitioning from incarceration to community re-entry in Canada. The study focuses on the Prosper program delivered by the community organization Amadeusz (learn more at https://amadeusz.ca/home), which provides culturally responsive, relationship-centered supports for individuals facing firearm-related charges. Guided by Critical Race Theory and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies, two focus groups with six racialized female caseworkers were conducted alongside examining archival interviews and program evaluation data. In this paper, we find uncountable families of generalized inverse sequences on intervals, where the bonding functions consist of a finite number of line segments, such that the inverse limit spaces of these sequences are pointwise self-homeomorphic continua. We give several examples of pointwise self-homeomorphic continua obtained in this manner including the dendrite D3 and a dendrite containing Dω. The dendrite D3 was obtained previously, by others, as a generalized inverse limit but the bonding function in that example contained infinitely many line segments. In Western Australia (WA), stock assessments for key demersal species, including snapper and red emperor, have traditionally used bespoke integrated models developed in-house by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). In line with other Australian jurisdictions, DPIRD is transitioning to Stock Synthesis (SS) as its primary platform for integrated stock assessments of WA finfish. To support this transition, DPIRD commissioned an independent expert review of recent integrated models applied to three demersal stocks. This publication responds to recommendations from Professor André Punt (University of Washington and CSIRO) in his 2024 review, which examined assessments for Pilbara red …

Simulation-based surgical training has the potential to significantly improve surgical outcomes in developing countries. However, its implementation faces numerous challenges, including financial constraints, infrastructural limitations, cultural barriers, and a lack of trained personnel. High costs, limited access to technology, and resistance to innovative teaching methods hinder the adoption of simulation-based surgical training. To overcome these obstacles, strategic approaches are needed, such as leveraging low-fidelity simulators, building strong partnerships, and investing in faculty development. By addressing these challenges, developing countries can harness the power of simulation-based surgical training to enhance surgical education and improve patient care.

Objectives Previous work by an international taskforce delivered consensus to include rash, mucosal ulcers and alopecia in the mucocutaneous domain of a novel multi-domain clinical outcome measure for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) clinical trials, the Treatment Response Measure for SLE (TRM-SLE). (1) Here we report results of a consensus process to define a fit for purpose clinical outcome assessment and entry and response thresholds for assessment of mucocutaneous activity.

Generative artificial intelligence (“GAI”) has entered law wearing the costume of competence: fluent, confident, and fast. But legal practice is not a memory sport despite the bar exam. Lawyers are paid to create, test, and refine ideas (arguments, narratives, and theories of liability) inside an adversarial system that punishes error, rewards precision, and demands accountability. This article argues that the central risk of GAI in legal work is not merely “hallucinations” or confidentiality breaches; it is epistemic atrophy, an outsourcing of the intellectual labor by which lawyers understand where law comes from, how it changes, and why it applies. AI hiring tools are now ubiquitous in employment, promising efficiency, cost savings, and reduced human bias. Yet these systems often operate as “black boxes,” replicating or amplifying existing biases and raising significant legal concerns under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even without discriminatory intent, AI trained on historical hiring data can produce disparate impacts, exposing employers to liability for outcomes they cannot fully understand or explain. Plaintiffs face steep challenges in litigating such claims, particularly in identifying specific practices, demonstrating causation, and proposing feasible alternatives. The model extended a baseline homogeneous model by incorporating structural heterogeneity via a two-group interaction framework. The syringe-sharing population in the model is divided into inner and outer circle groups representing individuals with differing levels of syringe-sharing interaction intensity. While all agents share the same syringe-sharing probability and epidemiological processes remain identical across agents, the number of daily interaction opportunities differs between the two groups.
