International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
This study explores the use of ChatGPT as a help-seeking tool in educational contexts, examining both its potential benefits and costs through a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the various internal and external factors that either promote or hinder the use of ChatGPT for academic help-seeking. The strengths of ChatGPT, such as its 24/7 availability to provide immediate responses, non-judgmental tone, and the ability to provide personalized help based on specific prompts, position itself as a valuable resource for help-seekers. However, the low quality of the responses generated by …

Seizing The "Organic" Moment: Cuba's Agricultural Crossroads And Certified Organic Export Potential, Wesley J. Hevia, Michael T. Olexa, Thomas T. Ankersen, William A. Messina Jr.
Seizing The "Organic" Moment: Cuba's Agricultural Crossroads And Certified Organic Export Potential, Wesley J. Hevia, Michael T. Olexa, Thomas T. Ankersen, William A. Messina Jr.
Florida Journal of International Law
Cuba has been referred to as "the world's first national experiment in sustainable agriculture." Given the critical shortages in chemical inputs to Cuba's agricultural sector following the loss of Soviet economic support and subsidization, this may well be a fitting description. Cuba's use of the term "organic" to describe some of its agricultural production can be misleading. Not all of Cuba's "organic" products would satisfy the organic certification requirements for most developed countries. That being said, Cuba is shipping certified organic fresh citrus and citrus juices into EU markets. With proper investments and implementation of the appropriate procedures and protocols, …
Exploring Cuba's New Role In The World Economy: Paths And Perils, Wentong Zheng
Exploring Cuba's New Role In The World Economy: Paths And Perils, Wentong Zheng
Florida Journal of International Law
With the normalization of relations with the United States and other countries, Cuba is ushering in a new era with unprecedented opportunities in a globalized world. Participating in the world economy, however, is a risky proposition. It requires policymakers to carefully weigh the pros and cons of each development path and choose the one that best suits Cuba. It also requires policymakers to be prepared for the perils, both economic and legal, that may arise from Cuba's participation in the world economy. This Article explores Cuba's new role in the world economy and the perils that accompany this new role. …
The Meaning Of "Equal": Evolution Of Racial Equality In The United States, Jon L. Mills
The Meaning Of "Equal": Evolution Of Racial Equality In The United States, Jon L. Mills
Florida Journal of International Law
The focus of this paper is the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court case, Brown vs. Board of Education, the spark that reignited the long-time quest for racial equality and that challenged the United States to live up to its constitutionally-expressed principles. The case—and the judges and lawyers who made it happen—changed society and the law. For us, the case provides the quintessential example of how the rule of law can work in the United States to the benefit of the people. After all, the courts have the final word on the meaning of the Constitution.
Cuba's External Sector: Conditions, Challenges, And Opportunities, Paolo Spadoni
Cuba's External Sector: Conditions, Challenges, And Opportunities, Paolo Spadoni
Florida Journal of International Law
This study analyzes the current conditions (with a brief review of macroeconomic trends since 1990) in Cuba's external sector and identifies key problems that pose major challenges for the future. It examines Cuba's merchandise and service trade patterns, its largest sources of hard currency, its external debt and overall financial situation, and its latest attempts to attract overseas investors following the enactment of a new foreign investment law and the opening of a special development zone at the port of Mariel. The study also analyzes the economic effects of Obama's measures on Cuba and offers some preliminary considerations on the …
State Capitalism In Cuba: The Lessons Of The Literature On State Owned Enterprises And Market Liberalization, D. Daniel Sokol
State Capitalism In Cuba: The Lessons Of The Literature On State Owned Enterprises And Market Liberalization, D. Daniel Sokol
Florida Journal of International Law
This Article outlines core concerns for Cuba in its market liberalization process. First, from the agency cost perspective, it explores the limitations of state owned enterprises (SOEs) versus private (publicly traded) firms. Then, it examines the empirical literature on SOEs and SOE reforms and privatizations. Next, the Article offers a number of possible policies going forward that will allow Cuba to reform its state capitalism to benefit Cuba's consumers. Such reforms include SOE corporatization, SOE privatization, and the introduction of a competition policy system to Cuba (as effective corporate governance and competition may be substitutes for each other).
Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Civil Code, And The Problem Of Transculturation, Pedro A. Malavet
Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Civil Code, And The Problem Of Transculturation, Pedro A. Malavet
Florida Journal of International Law
In this paper, I have two purposes. First, I offer a simple warning of the dangers posed by cultural imperialism in the legal exchanges that we are beginning. Second, and more positively, I invite my Cuban colleagues to educate me about what happened to the Civil Code in Cuba in the period between 1898 and 1959. The positive aspect should contribute to a comparative study of law in which we can understand the respective Cuban and U.S. legal cultures, using the mixed experience of Puerto Rico with Spanish civil law and the U.S. common law as part of the process …

Following, the work addresses the history of Cuba, in order to weave in the record of women's movements and women's organizations on the island …

Food Security, Industrialized Agriculture, And A Changing Global Climate: Perspectives On The United States And Cuba, Mary Jane Angelo
Florida Journal of International Law
This Article outlines the challenges of feeding a growing population in a time of climate change and in the shadow of the risks presented by industrialized agriculture. Part II presents an overview of current food insecurity and explores the likely exacerbation that will result from the impacts of climate change. Part III compares the evolution of agricultural systems in the United States and Cuba. This part also examines the environmental harms caused by industrialized agriculture in the United States and the limited protection offered by U.S. environmental law to protect against these harms. This part then turns to the evolution …
