Stimuli-Responsive Temporary Adhesives: Enabling Debonding On Demand Through Strategic Molecular Design, Nicholas D. Blelloch, Hana J. Yarbrough, Katherine A. Mirica

Dartmouth Scholarship

Stimuli-responsive temporary adhesives constitute a rapidly developing class of materials defined by the modulation of adhesion upon exposure to an external stimulus or stimuli. Engineering these materials to shift between two characteristic properties, strong adhesion and facile debonding, can be achieved through design strategies that target molecular functionalities. This perspective reviews the recent design and development of these materials, with a focus on the different stimuli that may initiate debonding. These stimuli include UV light, thermal energy, chemical triggers, and other potential triggers, such as mechanical force, sublimation, electromagnetism. The conclusion discusses the fundamental value of systematic investigations of the …

Characterization of differently textured porous materials, as well as different volumetric porous media mixtures, in relation to mass and heat transport is vital for many engineering and research applications. Functional relations describing physical (e.g., grain-size distribution, total porosity), thermal, and gas diffusion properties of porous media and mixtures are necessary to optimize the design of porous systems that involve heat and gas transport processes. However, only a limited number of studies provide characterization of soil physical, thermal, and gas diffusion properties and the functional relationships of these properties under varying soil water contents, especially for soil mixtures, complicating optimization efforts. …

Single-Rail Adiabatic Logic For Energy-Efficient And Cpa-Resistant Cryptographic Circuit In Low-Frequency Medical Devices, Amit Degada, Himanshu Thapliyal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research

Designing energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuits in low-frequency medical devices are challenging due to low-energy requirements. Also, the conventional CMOS logic-based cryptographic circuits solutions in medical devices can be vulnerable to side-channel attacks (e.g. correlation power analysis (CPA)). In this article, we explored single-rail Clocked CMOS Adiabatic Logic (CCAL) to design an energy-efficient and secure cryptographic circuit for low-frequency medical devices. The performance of the CCAL logic-based circuits was checked with a power clock generator (2N2P-PCG) integrated into the design for the frequency range of 50 kHz to 250 kHz. The CCAL logic gates show an average of approximately 48% …

Disinheritance, Discrimination, And The Case For Including Adult Independent Children In Dependants’ Relief Schemes: Lawen Estate V Nova Scotia, Jane Thomson Dec 2021

Disinheritance, Discrimination, And The Case For Including Adult Independent Children In Dependants’ Relief Schemes: Lawen Estate V Nova Scotia, Jane Thomson

Dalhousie Law Journal

In 2019 a Superior Court in Nova Scotia excluded adult independent children as “Dependants” under Nova Scotia’s Testator’s Family Maintenance Act. The decision was based on a finding that testamentary autonomy is a constitutional right protected by s. 7 of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This article explains why the constitutional decision in Lawen Estate v Nova Scotia was incorrect. It also demonstrates why the inclusion of adult independent children in dependants’ relief schemes is not only benign in most instances, but may play a role in preventing the perpetuation of discrimination in the private law. This article also …
