Deep Learning Approach To Improved Image Quality For Medical Diagnostics, Olivia Loesch, Katie Leyba, Halyley Chan, Craig Goergen

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

The United Nation’s health-related Sustainable Development Goals are difficult to achieve in low- and middle-income countries due to workforce shortages and inadequate health surveillance systems. However, with the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer algorithms, it is possible to apply AI to healthcare technologies to improve progress towards these UN standards. This project aims at using and improving computer algorithms and deep learning to aid in the extraction of important structural and functional information from murine carotid artery ultrasound and photoacoustic images. First, we created a large database of simulated photoacoustic images to optimize the algorithms. These images were …

Health Management and Policy Faculty Publications

Background

Older adults receive treatment for fall injuries in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The effect of persistent polypharmacy (i.e. using multiple medications over a long period) on fall injuries is understudied, particularly for outpatient injuries. We examined the association between persistent polypharmacy and treated fall injury risk from inpatient and outpatient settings in community-dwelling older adults.

Methods

The Health, Aging and Body Composition Study included 1764 community-dwelling adults (age 73.6 ± 2.9 years; 52% women; 38% black) with Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS) claims at or within 6 months after 1998/99 clinic visit. Incident fall injuries (N = 545 in …

Exploring Differences Of Age And Gender On Perceived Experience Of Active Participation Cybersecurity Learning, James Lakko

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Many organizations including the United States government have identified a shortage of cybersecurity professionals in the workforce. This thesis explores the effectiveness of escape room/simulation based learning in an active participation and immersive education to motivate pursuing cybersecurity. A survey was administered to the participants of the 2021 BYU Cybersecurity Camp regarding their experience in the Interactive Cybersecurity Experience (ICE). The ICE is a simulator/escape room that challenges participants to complete a Star Trek themed mission by overcoming cybersecurity obstacles. The three demographics that were surveyed included a camp for educators, a camp for boys, and a camp for girls. …

Measuring Science Teachers' Emotional Experiences With Evolution Using Real World Scenarios, William Lee Romine, Rutuja Mahajan, Amber Todd

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Low acceptance of evolution remains an obstacle to quality biology instruction. We develop and utilize a novel assessment which measures emotional experience in light of real-world evolution education scenarios. We presented 296 science teachers 4 pro-evolution and 8 anti-evolution scenarios and asked them to rate their levels of joy, anger, sadness, fear, disgust, shame, and guilt elicited by that scenario on an ordinal 5-point scale. We used exploratory factor analysis to extract the most important dimensions in the teachers’ responses, Rasch analysis to explore the validity of the extracted subscales, and stepwise regression to find the most important factors driving …

Traffic Crash Prediction Using Machine Learning Models, Yifeng Chen

Dissertations and Theses

Traffic crashes account for most of casualties and injuries worldwide, and there has been growing concerns and studies regarding the contributing factors of traffic crashes. There are many factors causing or related to an occurrence of traffic crash, e.g., land use, traffic flow conditions, driver behavior and weather condition. This paper studied the spatial and temporal distribution of crashes on highway and developed real-time prediction models for crash occurrence. Traffic flow data, weather data, and crash data from multiple data sources were collected and processed to develop the model. Multiple machine learning models, such as SVM model and Decision Tree …

Queerificando A Cristo: Manifestando La Gloriosa PasióN
Y Promiscuidad Amorosa De La EncarnacióN, Lisa Isherwood

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article looks at the trajectory of queer theologies, especially highlighting the challenges and opportunities they offer to the Christian tradition. It examines the way in which a queer eye on doctrine and church history yields different perspectives. These benefit the LGBTIQ+ community and the whole Christian community through deepening and broadening our understanding of the incarnate divine. While acknowledging the existence of a fluid rupturing core in Christianity —a queerness that begs for its embracing— the analysis concludes that Incarnation and queer theory are splendid passionate and risk compelling companions towards the deconstruction of Christ.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article analyzes immigrants’ genderized and sexualized experiences intermingling with theological discourses by exploring the film Santitos [little saints]. Queer theory and queer/indecent theologies provide theoretical tools to interrogate those experiences in the movie. The analysis explores how religious institutions have traditionally denied the intersectionality of gender/sexuality and religion/theology that bind up the everyday lives of the faithful. Thus, it explores alternatives to view those issues from a perspective that could still be considered «Christian.» Furthermore, it contributes to a perspective that could enforce and promote the spiritual growth of the faithful amidst situations of migration and sexual work.

Understanding Proximity Mobile Payments Adoption In South Africa: A Perceived Risk Perspective, Charlene Eksteen, Michael Humbani Dec 2021

Understanding Proximity Mobile Payments Adoption In South Africa: A Perceived Risk Perspective, Charlene Eksteen, Michael Humbani

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

Although existing literature claims that consumers are ready for proximity mobile payments, the reality is that adoption is still low in South Africa. Service providers’ attempts to translate this potential into profi t is hindered by consumers’ perception of risks associated with proximity mobile payments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived risk dimensions as possible inhibitors of proximity mobile payment adoption, as well as to investigate the role of gender diff erences, drawing from the perceived risk and push-pull theories. Using a convenience sample, data was collected from South African smartphone users, from whom 284 valid …

Inclusive churches propose to explore a path of revision and adaptation of queer faith in our Global South contexts. The way initiated is promising, and indeed the inclusive churches —together with queer theologians and their allies— are setting a course towards adapting Christianity to people's contexts instead of the traditional way of adapting contexts to Christian faith.

Una Pareja De «EspíRitus Rebeldes» E Indecentes: Una Lectura Queer De La Novela MediúMnica Caminhos Cruzados De Mauricio De Castro, Henry Isaac PeñA Grajales

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This article relates Marcella Althaus-Reid’s indecent theology to the novel Caminhos cruzados [crossed paths] by the spiritist medium Mauricio de Castro. In this novel, a homoaffective couple —Sergio and Fabricio— suffer homophobia from society, the implication of defamation, and are victims of prejudice of «sinfulness» and «immorality» because of their homoaffectivity in a committed and stable couple relationship. In analyzing the story of these two protagonists, indecent, «rebellious spirits,» and queer, I apply the Sexual Theology of Liberation method proposed by Althaus-Reid following the Latin American Theology of Liberation: see, judge, act.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

In September 2018, in Cordoba, Argentina, citizens witnessed the launching of a campaign in a public transport line with the inscription «#Con mis hijos no te metas.» It was enacted against the Comprehensive Sex Education Law (ESI) and sponsored by the Christian Church Cita con la Vida. This article analyzes the incidence of conservative evangelical churches in local politics based on this campaign in public. It concludes that in the religious field, conservative evangelical churches dispute the monopoly of the Roman Catholic Church —primarily political and social power— through the use of public space.

Post-Operative Vision Loss Following Cataract Surgery: Lessons Learned From An Eight-Year Analysis, Thanigasalam Thevi

Manipal Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Cataract is an ageing process and surgery is the only mode of restoring vision. Patients who undergo surgery have only one aim in mind, which is improvement in their visual acuity (VA). However, some patients do not achieve this aim for improved vision after having undergone the surgery. Reasons for worsening vision after cataract surgery should be identified to counsel the patients on the possibility of poorer outcomes so that patients are prepared for such eventualities should they happen. Objective: While cataract surgery restores vision in most, a subset of patients experience worsening vision post-operatively. We investigated various reasons …

Effect Of Biofertilizer In Organic And Conventional Systems On Growth, Yield And Baking Quality Of Hard Red Winter Wheat, Ammar Al-Zubade, Timothy D. Phillips, Mark A. Williams, Krista L. Jacobsen, David Van Sanford

Horticulture Faculty Publications

A two-year study (harvest years 2019 and 2020) was conducted to investigate the effect of a commercially available biofertilizer, in combination with variable nitrogen (N) rate, on bread baking quality and agronomic traits in hard winter wheat grown in conventional (CONV) and organic (ORG) farming systems in Kentucky, USA. The hard red winter wheat cultivar ‘Vision 45’ was used with three N rates (44, 89.6 and 134.5 kg/ha as Low, Med and High, respectively) and three biofertilizer spray regimes (no spray, one spray and two sprays). All traits measured were significantly affected by the agricultural production system (CONV or ORG) …
