Active Membrane Energy Exchanger For Air Cooling And Dehumidification, Songhao Wu, Andrew Fix, David M. Warsinger, James E. Braun Dec 2021

Active Membrane Energy Exchanger For Air Cooling And Dehumidification, Songhao Wu, Andrew Fix, David M. Warsinger, James E. Braun

Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment consume 35% of total building energy use in the US, among which a large share is used for cooling and dehumidification. The majority of air dehumidification systems take the conventional approach of moisture condensation removal. It requires air to be cooled below its dew point temperature and is an energy-intensive process, especially for areas with hot and humid climates. Vapor selective membrane systems are promising alternatives for air dehumidification as they do not require cooling energy for latent (humidity) heat removal. It allows water vapor transport through the membrane while blocking air. Previous …

An Analysis Of Two Photometric Redshift Methods And Their Uses For Finding Void Galaxies, Rochelle J. Steele Dec 2021

An Analysis Of Two Photometric Redshift Methods And Their Uses For Finding Void Galaxies, Rochelle J. Steele

Theses and Dissertations

An extensive survey of extragalactic objects with accurate distances is difficult to perform. Distance at that scale is commonly found with redshift and most easily identified with spectroscopic observations, which are time intensive. This is especially a concern when surveying for the elusive, possibly non-existent dwarf galaxies in the centers of voids, whose light would be so faint that a spectroscopic survey to find them would be unreasonably time consuming. Photometric methods to calculate redshift could provide a much quicker way to find distance, but the photometric methods used thus far are characterized by large errors that make them unusable …

Phase Effects On Turbulent Transport In The Magnetic Confinement Of Plasmas For Nuclear Fusion, Dempsey Rogers Dec 2021

Phase Effects On Turbulent Transport In The Magnetic Confinement Of Plasmas For Nuclear Fusion, Dempsey Rogers

Physics

With climate change effects on the rise, the global energy infrastructure requires revision. We first provide a brief review of common energy resources as well as their safety and climate effects. We then compare and contrast nuclear fission and fusion based energy schemes. Difficulties based on the requirements of the fusion triple product, as well as the fast neutrons from the deuterium and tritium reaction are also discussed. The lack of sufficient experimental controls in enhanced confinement modes like the I-mode and the H-mode, lead to difficulties satisfying the restrictions imposed by the Greenwald density limit. These combined with several …

3t3-L1 Adipocytes As A Model Of Glut4 Translocation, Aline Collin Dec 2021

3t3-L1 Adipocytes As A Model Of Glut4 Translocation, Aline Collin

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Type 2 diabetes (T2D), a lethal disease, reveals an alarming increase of epidemic proportions and, by 2050, an estimated 1 in 3 adults in the US will suffer from it. Persistent and systemic inflammatory and oxidative stress in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle are recognized as key players in the progression of T2D. T2D is characterized by insulin resistance, the inability of cells to respond to standard circulating levels of insulin, resulting in hyperglycemia. In adipocytes and skeletal muscle, glucose uptake, a vital step in blood glucose regulation, predominantly occurs via the glucose transporter 4 (Glut4) in an insulindependent recruitment …

Barriers To Completing Degrees For Uaf Ph.D. Students, Hannah L. Whitaker Dec 2021

Barriers To Completing Degrees For Uaf Ph.D. Students, Hannah L. Whitaker

Counseling

A student faces several challenges when working towards a doctoral degree. Previous research has demonstrated that discrimination, lack of support, poor mentorship, funding issues, mental health concerns, and minority stress are barriers to degree completion. The available research also suggests that these difficulties are especially challenging for underrepresented students. Although universities are currently attempting to mitigate certain of these barriers, more can be done to understand the doctoral experience as a way of supporting students. Focus groups were conducted for this thesis to explore the barriers, strengths, and advice for others that doctoral students have at the University of Alaska …

Age Related Dementias, Shahab Soltani Dec 2021

Age Related Dementias, Shahab Soltani

Chemistry and Biochemistry

During the last few decades, the average life expectancy has dramatically increased in the U.S.A. and globally. As a result, the diseases associated with age, such as dementia, significantly impact families, society, and government. Dementia is a broad term describing memory loss, cognitive dysfunctions, and limited social skills caused by many factors such as aging, stroke, and genetic background. Although the primary etiology remains unclear but inflammatory reactions, neurodegeneration, vascular abnormalities play an important role in the progression of these disorders. Therefore, treatment is mainly supportive to relieve the symptoms of dementia and not to cure dementia or slow down …

Carbon Dioxide Enhanced Oil Recovery And Sequestration In The Orion Oil Field In The North Slope Region Of Alaska, Banabas D. Dogah Dec 2021

Carbon Dioxide Enhanced Oil Recovery And Sequestration In The Orion Oil Field In The North Slope Region Of Alaska, Banabas D. Dogah

Engineering

Carbon dioxide flooding in viscous oil systems has been proven to improve oil recovery and store CO₂ in several geologic basins worldwide. With global energy steadily transitioning towards decarbonization, CO₂-EOR and Sequestration can reduce the carbon footprint from crude oil production. Although well accepted globally, the potential of improved oil recovery and CO₂ storage capacity has not been extensively studied in Alaska. Since the CO₂ injection process involves phase transition, reservoir simulation becomes more complex. It requires reliable techniques to estimate the ultimate recovery factor, oil production rate, and CO₂ storage volumes precisely. This study focuses on carbon dioxide enhanced …

Building Excellence Through Shared Governance And Continuous Process Improvement, Deborah Reitter Dec 2021

Building Excellence Through Shared Governance And Continuous Process Improvement, Deborah Reitter

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Background: Nursing shared governance in the hospital setting is a well-established structure for shared decision-making between staff nurses and nurse leaders to improve nursing practice, quality of care, and patient safety. Establishing effective, shared governance can take several years: new skills must be acquired, new behaviors accepted, and new professional commitments made. Newcomers to shared governance require support, education, and the opportunity to acquire requisite skills; otherwise, interest, commitment, and achievement of desired outcomes cannot be sustained.

Local Problem: A large hospital in California established a shared governance structure in 2018. Performance gaps between two high-performing Nursing Unit Councils …

Targeting Pre-Operative Booking Processes To Decrease Risks Of "Never Events", Rebecca Lynn Poths, Rebecca Lynn Poths

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Problem: Wrong patient, wrong procedure, wrong site, and wrong side surgeries are such egregious errors that are known as “never events.” Root cause analyses can pinpoint a failure yet do little to determine if corrective action has reduced the risk of recurrence.

Context: Monitoring surgical cases prospectively to identify weaknesses that could help identify specific risk factors to avert and move toward zero defects. The setting for this quality improvement project is a >300-bed Level III trauma hospital, where the risk of wrong-site surgeries and lack of standardized processes in the surgical pre-operative booking process was of concern to …

The Effects Of Naloxone Education Among Adults In Alameda County, Patricia Ronnica Tinglin

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Fatal opioid overdose is a growing concern in the United States (U.S.). The pharmaceutical companies assured the medical community that opioid pain relievers were not addictive. As a result, providers prescribed them at a significantly higher rate, which led to more extensive use of authorized and unauthorized opioid use before it was realized that they could be highly habit-forming (The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2019). A growing body of evidence supports providing naloxone education as a means of harm reduction. The quality improvement project aims to implement educational sessions for adult patients seen at East Bay …

Agency, Inclusion, And Empathy As Power: The Last Dispatch From My Ma In Engagement Journalism (And My Final Report), Jacqueline Neber

Capstones

My community practicum engaged New York's intellectually and developmentally disabled community, and their families, in the process of making the process of reporting abuse and neglect inside group homes more accessible and transparent. Serious abuse and neglect still happens in group homes for people with disabilities, which has led to death and serious injury, and reporting issues is not necessarily easy. After a year of listening to community concerns, I created a service journalism post that made reporting abuse and neglect easier for families and the public. And most prominently, I created "How to Stand Up for Yourself in Your …
