Neighborhood Form And Social Cohesion: What Can We Learn Before And During Social Distancing, Wei Liu
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
Creating a more sustainable urbanism is among the most pressing issues facing the world. Social sustainability is often overlooked as a pillar of sustainable urbanism. A cohesive community, a core component of social sustainability, is an essential social resource in developing a fundamental unit of sustainable urbanism. Social cohesion has the ability to help communities navigate and overcome crisis, a quality of a cohesive neighborhood that has been brought to the forefront during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the urban planning and design literature provides insights into the role of physical form in social cohesion more research is still needed. …

Background:
The use of smart speakers to improve well-being had been trialed in social care by others; however, we were not aware of their implementation in most care homes across a region in the Southwest of the United Kingdom. For the widespread adoption of new technology, it must be locally demonstrable and become normalized.
Objective:
The aim of this study was to install smart speakers in care homes in a rural and coastal region and to explore if and how the devices were being used, the barriers to their implementation, and their potential benefits.
Methods:
Email, workshops, drop-in sessions, phone, …

Background There has been a shift in focus of international dementia policies from improving diagnostic rates to enhancing the post-diagnostic support provided to people with dementia and their carers. There is, however, little agreement over what constitutes good post-diagnostic support. This study aimed to identify the components of post-diagnostic dementia support. Methods We adopted a qualitative design using interviews, focus groups and observation to explore the perspectives of key stakeholders on the content of post-diagnostic dementia support. Purposive sampling was used to identify sites in England and Wales recognised as delivering good practice. Participants included 17 people with dementia, 31 …

Secret Sharing And Its Variants, Matroids,Combinatorics., Shion Samadder Chaudhury Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The main focus of this thesis is secret sharing. Secret Sharing is a very basic and fundamental cryptographic primitive. It is a method to share a secret by a dealer among different parties in such a way that only certain predetermined subsets of parties can together reconstruct the secret while some of the remaining subsets of parties can have no information about the secret. Secret sharing was introduced independently by Shamir [139] and Blakely [20]. What they introduced is called a threshold secret sharing scheme. In such a secret sharing scheme the subsets of parties that can reconstruct a secret …

The Last Nephite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds
The Last Nephite Scribes, Noel B. Reynolds
Faculty Publications
This paper leverages the insights of modern scholars on the scribal schools of the ancient near east to identify and track the Nephite scribal school across the ten centuries of the Nephite dispensation. Mormon tells us his abridgment only includes a hundredth part of the Nephite history available to him on the Large Plates of Nephi. That being the case, it is especially impressive that his abridgment tracks the responsibility for maintaining and preserving the Nephite record and other sacred objects—the responsibility of the scribes—across that millennium without gaps. Mormon and his son Moroni were themselves trained scribes who could …

Principal Component Analysis In Paspalum Germplasm Characterization, A. Regitano Neto, L. A. R. Batista
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In a survey, through principal component analyses, for the most representative descriptors to be used in Paspalum germplasm characterization, 16 agronomic traits, 16 reproductive traits and 21 vegetative traits were evaluated in 32 accessions comprising Paspalum plicatulum (19) and Paspalum compressifolium (13) from the institutional germplasm collection. ANOVA for agronomic descriptors showed significant differences among accessions, except for percentage of dry matter in winter (DMW) which was not significant. Principal component analyses allowed reduction of 69%, 69% and 62%, respectively, in the initial number of descriptors, and the election of the most important for agronomic traits: DMYS, DMYW, RGS, CPPW …

Evaluating Varieties Of Alfalfa And Tall Fescue For Tolerance To Over-Grazing By Cattle, Robert F. Spitaleri, Jimmy C. Henning, Charles T. Dougherty, Garry D. Lacefield, B. T. Larson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Cultivars of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were seeded in small (1.5 m x 4.6 m) plots and harvested for estimating yield the following spring. Plots were then grazed by cattle continuously for the remainder of the season so as to keep stand heights at 7.5 cm or less. This procedure was repeated for one or two more grazing seasons, depending on stand survival. Stands were visually rated for stand in the fall and spring. Marked differences in grazing tolerance were observed among alfalfa cultivars, following closely the commercial designations as grazing-type or …

Large codebases, e.g., with millions of lines of code, can have sections that are dead - sections of code that are rarely or never executed in practice. Currently, developers cannot feasibly identify dead code, especially for client applications that are server driven. In the absence of evidence that a code section is dead, developers are obliged to migrate it to higher versions of the codebase. Dead code thus accumulates over time and adds a tax on all future changes. This disclosure describes techniques to detect dead code based on the behavior patterns of client software during runtime. With user permission, …
