Smallest U.S. Population Growth In History: More Deaths, Fewer Births, And Less Immigration, Kenneth M. Johnson Dec 2021

Smallest U.S. Population Growth In History: More Deaths, Fewer Births, And Less Immigration, Kenneth M. Johnson

Carsey Publications

In this brief, author Kenneth Johnson reports that the U.S. population grew by just 393,000 between July of 2020 and July of 2021 according to new Census Bureau estimates—the lowest rate of annual population gain in history and the smallest numeric gain in more than 100 years. Diminished immigration from abroad contributed, but the driver of this minimal population gain was that there were only 148,000 more births than deaths. This is the smallest natural gain in more than 80 years. COVID-19 played a central role in this small population gain. In addition to 475,000 deaths directly attributable to COVID-19 …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Large-scale water transfer projects (LWTPs) transfer water to urban and agricultural areas. The Majes-Siguas canal, established in 1983, is an LWTP that created a thriving agricultural area through irrigating the Majes district in the Atacama Desert of Peru. Like other LWTP receiving basins, the project has attracted an influx of migrants who work on the farms. At the same time, the Majes LWTP is the district’s only source of water and has an aging infrastructure which presents significant risks. While many studies critically analyze the consequences of LWTPs in water supply basins, few evaluate the resilience of communities living in …

Temperature Relaxation And Magnetically Suppressed Expansion In Strongly Coupled Ultracold Neutral Plasmas, Robert Tucker Sprenkle Dec 2021

Temperature Relaxation And Magnetically Suppressed Expansion In Strongly Coupled Ultracold Neutral Plasmas, Robert Tucker Sprenkle

Theses and Dissertations

Ultracold neutral plasmas provide a platform for studying transport properties in an idealized environment. In this dissertation, transport properties in a Ca$^+$/Yb$^+$ dual species ultracold neutral plasma and a Ca$^+$ magnetized ultracold neutral plasma are studied. In dual species plasmas, we study ion-ion temperature relaxation. We compare measured relaxation rates with atomistic simulations and a range of popular theories. Our work validates the assumptions and capabilities of molecular dynamic simulations and invalidates theoretical models in this regime. This work illustrates an approach for precision determinations of detailed material properties in Coulomb mixtures across a wide range of conditions. We also …

Effects Of A Reminiscence Learning Experience On Registered Nurses' Attitudes Toward And Empathy With Older Adults, William J. Puentes Dec 2021

Effects Of A Reminiscence Learning Experience On Registered Nurses' Attitudes Toward And Empathy With Older Adults, William J. Puentes

Dissertations

Negative attitudes toward older adults are endemic to the nursing profession, as well as society in general. With older adults accounting for an ever increasing proportion of health care services, it is imperative that nurse educators develop continuing education activities that have a positive impact on registered nurses' attitudes toward older adults. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of participation in a reminiscence learning experience (RLE) on registered nurses' attitudes toward and empathy with older adults.

A Visually Realistic Simulator For Autonomous Evtol Aircraft, Seth M. Nielsen Dec 2021

A Visually Realistic Simulator For Autonomous Evtol Aircraft, Seth M. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

Electrically powered vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could provide a new mode of air transportation of people and cargo that is low-cost, on-demand, and able to reach more areas than is possible with current technology. They have the unique ability to takeoff and land in congested spaces yet efficiently travel long distances which makes them a promising technology for applications such as rapid medical assistance, automated package delivery, or human transportation. This type of aircraft has only recently become a possibility, owing to advancements in battery technology, computing power, and sensor technologies, and thus support for eVTOLs is lacking …

Cognitive Systems Engineering Models Applied To Cybersecurity, Tiffani Bragg Dec 2021

Cognitive Systems Engineering Models Applied To Cybersecurity, Tiffani Bragg

Theses

Cybersecurity is an increasing area of concern for organizations and individuals alike. The majority of successfully executed cyberattacks are a result of human error. One common type of attack that targets human users is phishing. In spite of this, there is a lack of research surrounding human implications on phishing behavior. Using an online survey platform with both phishing and legitimate emails, the present research examined the utility of various cognitive engineering models for modeling responses to these example emails. Using Signal Detection Theory (SDT) and Fuzzy Signal Detection Theory (Fuzzy SDT), the influence of familiarity with phishing and having …

Twin Anomaly Detection System, Paaras Chand Dec 2021

Twin Anomaly Detection System, Paaras Chand

Master's Projects

Anomaly detection performs well in situations where signature (and other rule-based) methods fail; there is no need to identify every threat as long as it is different from the norm. The tradeoff is that anomaly detection often results in a large number of false positives. While previous work has capitalized on the data imbalance problem to train models with only one set of data (one-class classification), few have utilized the limiting set for anything other than testing purposes. This paper seeks to utilize two anomaly detectors: one that is trained on the positive set and one that is trained on …
