Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Whether instruction is happening in traditional classroom settings or through a variety of virtual platforms, successful teaching requires that all teachers possess the ability to collaborate with others, evaluate student performance, establish quality learning environments, and individualize instruction. Drawing on the 2017 Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) publication, High-Leverage Practices for K-12 Special Education Teachers (McLeskey et al., 2017), the Special Education faculty at Eastern Kentucky University describe ways in which four intertwined components of collaboration, assessment, social/ emotional/behavioral practices, and instruction are incorporated into teacher preparation courses to equip candidates with skills to meet the individualized learning needs of …

The Why, The Who, The How… A Guide To Planning Effective, Collaborative, Person-Centered Transition Services For Students With Disabilities, Kristie Covington, Lorita Rowlett

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Providing effective transition services and plans for students with disabilities can seem like a daunting task to special education teachers and supporting agencies. Planning effective collaboration and coordination between stakeholders increases the likelihood that students with disabilities will graduate high school and participate in desired postsecondary activities, be it paid employment or postsecondary education (NTACT, 2019). Many special education teachers and supporting agencies are unsure where to start when planning and coordinating transition services; in response we created a document that can be used as a guidance and planning tool to design effective, person-centered, collaborative transition services. The planning tool …

A Special Educator’S How-To Guide To Visual Activity Schedules, Mary Elliott, Rasheeda Swain

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

Students with disabilities often struggle with the transitions throughout the school day, which can lead to prompt dependency and the emergence of challenging behaviors. One evidence-based practice is the use of visual activity schedules (VAS). VAS provide a visual list of what will occur throughout the day, in the student’s mode of receptive communication (objects, picture symbols, words). VAS provide predictability to decrease the anxiety that can arise with transitions. The following practitioner’s piece provides guidance geared toward new special education teachers in how to choose the correct VAS symbols and create a VAS that is appropriate for your student’s …

Personality Dimensions Of Male And Female Law Enforcement Recruits Related To Academy Success, Chantel Duda Dec 2021

Personality Dimensions Of Male And Female Law Enforcement Recruits Related To Academy Success, Chantel Duda

Honors Theses

Research has found that male and female law enforcement recruits complete academy training at different rates, with female recruits typically completing at lower rates than male recruits. While the literature on the topic demonstrates a variety of training characteristics that explain some of the difference, it is possible that typical personality differences between men and women play a role in some of the unexplained disparities in academy passing rates. This study attempted to discern differences between personality characteristics among male and female academy recruits using survey data from two major metropolitan law enforcement academies. It was hypothesized that male cadets …

Late-Life Exercise Mitigates Skeletal Muscle Epigenetic Aging, Kevin A. Murach, Andrea L. Dimet-Wiley, Yuan Wen, Camille R. Brightwell, Christine M. Latham, Cory M. Dungan, Christopher S. Fry, Stanley J. Watowich

Center for Muscle Biology Faculty Publications

There are functional benefits to exercise in muscle, even when performed late in life, but the contributions of epigenetic factors to late-life exercise adaptation are poorly defined. Using reduced representation bisulfite sequencing (RRBS), ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and mitochondrial-specific examination of methylation, targeted high-resolution methylation analysis, and DNAge™ epigenetic aging clock analysis with a translatable model of voluntary murine endurance/resistance exercise training (progressive weighted wheel running, PoWeR), we provide evidence that exercise may mitigate epigenetic aging in skeletal muscle. Late-life PoWeR from 22–24 months of age modestly but significantly attenuates an age-associated shift toward promoter hypermethylation. The epigenetic age of muscle …

Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) is a large tree species of the Euphorbiaceae family with inestimable economic importance. Rubber tree breeding programs currently aim to improve growth and production, and the use of early genotype selection technologies can accelerate such processes, mainly with the incorporation of genomic tools, such as marker-assisted selection (MAS). However, few quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been used successfully in MAS for complex characteristics. Recent research shows the efficiency of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for locating QTL regions in different populations. In this way, the integration of GWAS, RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) methodologies, coexpression networks and enzyme networks can …

New Nurses' Experiences In The Lateral Violence Zone: A Grounded Theory, Mary Lillian Hanks Dec 2021

New Nurses' Experiences In The Lateral Violence Zone: A Grounded Theory, Mary Lillian Hanks

Dissertations

The impact of lateral violence on nurses and the nursing profession contribute to the nursing shortage and has negative effects on patient care (Vessey, DeMarco, Gaffney, & Budin, 2009). According to the Center for American Nurses (CENTER, 2008), lateral violence and bullying are an everyday occurrence among health care professionals. Nurses must gain real world experiences to deliver quality, safe, and effective patient care (Benner, Surphen, Leonard, & Day, 2010). Unfortunately, there are experienced nurses who are unable or unwilling to help novice nurses transition into their new role. Impaired relationships among nurses can lead to absenteeism, medical errors, and …

The need for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) next-generation vaccines has been highlighted by the rise of variants of concern (VoCs) and the long-term threat of emerging coronaviruses. Here, we design and characterize four categories of engineered nanoparticle immunogens that recapitulate the structural and antigenic properties of the prefusion SARS-CoV-2 spike (S), S1, and receptor-binding domain (RBD). These immunogens induce robust S binding, ACE2 inhibition, and authentic and pseudovirus neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. A spike-ferritin nanoparticle (SpFN) vaccine elicits neutralizing titers (ID

Marker-Less Motion Capture System Using Openpose, Bin Feng Dec 2021

Marker-Less Motion Capture System Using Openpose, Bin Feng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Motion capture systems are widely used for measuring athletic performance and as a diagnostic tool in sports medicine. Standard motion capture systems record body movement using: (1) a set of cameras to localize body segments; or (2) specialized suits in which inertial measurement units are directly attached to body segments. Major drawbacks of these systems are limited portability, affordability, and accessibility. This contribution presents a markerless motion capture system using a commercially available sports camera and the OpenPose human pose estimation algorithm. We have validated the proposed markerless system by analyzing the human biometrics during running and jumping movements. The …

Ecological Model In School Psychology: What Are The Historical Trends In School Psychology Research?, Kerry Lynn Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

More than 25 years ago, Conoley and Gutkin (1995) asserted the need for more adult-focused research and related practices in school psychology. In commemorating the 25-year anniversity of Conoley and Gutkin in a special issue in School Psychology (SP), Conoley et al. (2020) revisited some of their prior assertions, such school psychology practitioners and researchers would benefit from "adopting an ecological or public health approach" (p.329). They have preserved their position on the importance of adult-focused research and related practices in order to develop and maintain health-promoting systems for students. Conoley et al. concluded that school psychology has not moved …

A Deep Generative And Discriminative Approach In Modelling Spatial-Spectral Dynamics Of Varying Cognitive Load From Eeg Recordings, Felix Havugimana Dec 2021

A Deep Generative And Discriminative Approach In Modelling Spatial-Spectral Dynamics Of Varying Cognitive Load From Eeg Recordings, Felix Havugimana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cognitive load refers to the amount of used working memory resources, which is limited in both capacity and duration. Predicting cognitive load from raw electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings remains a challenge because of the high degree of noise due to technical variations in the recording process and the multi-factorial nature of the mapping between the EEG data and cognitive load. We present parameter-optimized deep convolutional neural network (CNN) models to predict four levels of cognitive load. We use eigenspace-based bootstrap sampling and Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to address the issue of noise and a small number of samples in EEG. We …

Rotavirus (RV)-encoded nonstructural protein 1 (NSP1), the product of gene segment 5, effectively antagonizes host interferon (IFN) signaling via multiple mechanisms. Recent studies with the newly established RV reverse genetics system indicate that NSP1 is not essential for the replication of the simian RV SA11 strain in cell culture. However, the role of NSP1 in RV infection
