Modelling Of Convection, Diffusion And Binding Of Chlorides In Concrete During Wetting-Drying Cycles, Long-Yuan Li, Dawang Li, Ping Li, Yao-Cheng Wang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Moisture convection in concrete is an important factor affecting the chloride diffusion in concrete. This paper presents a comprehensive study on the transport of moisture, carbon dioxide and chloride ions in concrete when subjected to wetting and drying cycles. A numerical model considering not only the transport of individual components but also the interaction between them is developed. The latter includes the concrete carbonation, chloride binding, the effect of concrete carbonation on chloride binding capacity, and the time-varying boundary conditions of carbon dioxide and chloride caused due to wetting and/or drying. The results obtained from the study demonstrate that when …

Embrittlement Failure Of 51crv4 Leaf Springs, Mn James, Dg Hattingh, L Matthews
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
High strength quenched and tempered alloys are used in the manufacture of leaf springs, and peening techniques are used to induce compressive residual stresses on the tension surface of the individual leaves to resist fatigue crack growth. However, the extent of such residual stresses is usually limited to around 0.1–0.2 mm deep. Their beneficial effect can therefore be negated by corrosion pitting, while high strength steels are known to also be susceptible to environmental embrittlement in high chloride environments. This case study deals with an interesting example of environmental embrittlement of multileaf springs reportedly made from 60Si2Mn steel, but actually …

The Numerical Re-Creation Of Experimentally Generated Nonlinear Irregular Wave Fields Using A Time-Reversal Approach, S. Draycott, P. K. Stansby, M. L. Mcallister, T. Davey, L. Jordan, T. Tosdevin, M. Hann
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Physical model testing in irregular waves is often used to assess performance, and validate numerical models, of offshore structures and platforms, yet the full phase-resolved experimental conditions including reflections and correct nonlinearity are seldom replicated numerically. This results in uncertainty in numerical model validation, particularly when considering extremes. Herein we assess a time-reversal approach for the accurate numerical replication of experimentally generated wave fields. Fifteen irregular sea states, including steep and breaking cases, are generated in two large laboratories in the UK and replicated numerically using the time-domain nonlinear potential flow code OceanWave3D. Through statistical, temporal, and spatial analysis, the …

An Exploration Of The Contribution Of Embodied, Situated Research Strategies To Cultural Ecosystem Services And Landscape Assessment Frameworks: An Environmental Empathy Case Study, K Łucznik, Jv Serrano, J Martin
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Since the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment in 2005, interest has increased in cultural ecosystem services (CESs) research to understand the complexity of the non-material benefits that people obtain from ecosystems. The intangible and interactive characteris-tics of CESs present many challenges regarding how to approach, quantify and even de-fine CESs. In this paper, we suggest looking at CESs through the lens of embodied and situated cognition theories. We advocate that such an approach should be applied to the development stage of CES research projects, as the embodied and situated experience of the site aids the development of research questions and future interventions. …

ObjectivesTo estimate the cost-effectiveness of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) as an adjunctive therapy to anti-seizure medication (ASMs) when compared with a strategy of ASMs alone for the management of drug resistant epilepsy (DRE).MethodsA five health state cohort transition model was developed, with a 10-year time horizon, a 3-month cycle length and an English National Health Service perspective. Health states were defined by a percentage reduction in seizure frequency and aligned with randomised trial data informing the first cycle transition probabilities. Thereafter, non-VNS patients remained in state, while a systematic literature review informed further VNS patient transitions up to year 2, …

“What Works” Registries Of Interventions To Improve Child And Youth Psychosocial Outcomes: A Critical Appraisal, Nick Axford, Louise Morpeth, Gretchen Bjornstad, Tim Hobbs, Vashti Berry
Peninsula Medical School
The last decade or more has seen a proliferation of online registries of evidence-based interventions designed to improve child and youth psychosocial outcomes. The purpose of these resources is typically to help decision-makers make sense of the evidence and thereby inform their decision-making about investment in interventions. Most registries are underpinned by standards of evidence, which are used to guide the rating of programs by a panel of experts. While supporters extol the influence of these initiatives in terms of making commissioners more discriminating about what they invest in, detractors contend that they stifle innovation and embody an unduly narrow …

Innate immune responses to emerging RNA viruses are increasingly recognized as having significant contributions to neurologic sequelae, especially memory disorders. Using a recovery model of West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis, we show that, while macrophages deliver the antiviral and anti-neurogenic cytokine IL-1β during acute infection; viral recovery is associated with continued astrocyte inflammasome-mediated production of inflammatory levels of IL-1β, which is maintained by hippocampal astrogenesis via IL-1R1 signaling in neural stem cells (NSC). Accordingly, aberrant astrogenesis is prevented in the absence of IL-1 signaling in NSC, indicating that only newly generated astrocytes exert neurotoxic effects, preventing synapse repair and promoting …

Mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) measured from blood specimens is a minimally invasive marker of mitochondrial function that exhibits both inter-individual and intercellular variation. To identify genes involved in regulating mitochondrial function, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 465,809 White individuals from the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium and the UK Biobank (UKB). We identified 133 SNPs with statistically significant, independent effects associated with mtDNA-CN across 100 loci. A combination of fine-mapping, variant annotation, and co-localization analyses was used to prioritize genes within each of the 133 independent sites. Putative causal genes …

Electronic Health records are an important part of a digital healthcare system. Due to their significance, electronic health records have become a major target for hackers, and hospitals/clinics prefer to keep the records at local sites protected by adequate security measures. This introduces challenges in sharing health records. Sharing health records however, is critical in building an accurate online diagnosis framework. Most local sites have small data sets, and machine learning models developed locally based on small data sets, do not have knowledge about other data sets and learning models used at other sites.
The work in this thesis utilizes …

An Exploration Of Octatonicism: From Liszt To Takemitsu, Yagan M. Kiely
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The octatonic pitch set can be found in the works of many composers since the early nineteenth century, often with different characteristics of the pitch set being exploited by the composers. Much of the literature on octatonicism relates to specific instances in compositions or a specific composer’s approach to it rather than exploring octatonicism from a more holistic perspective. This dissertation serves as a holistic resource for the characteristics of the octatonic pitch set; whether as a scale, especially with regards to common practice harmony; or an unordered set. It does this by considering the contextual historical implications of the …

Australia is home to one of the oldest continuous living cultures in the world. Now, more so than ever before, government and educational bodies are recognising the importance of integrating Indigenous cultures in education as a means of promoting intercultural understanding and improving educational outcomes for Indigenous students. The Australian Curriculum has advocated that Indigenous histories and cultures be embedded into every subject rather than taught separately. Drama is a curriculum area that provides many opportunities to integrate learning about Indigenous perspectives by exploring historically and culturally rich Indigenous theatre texts. Research is showing that non-Indigenous teachers are avoiding this …

Detection Of Emerging Neurodegeneration Using Bayesian Linear Mixed-Effect Modeling, Yann Cobigo, Richard J Perrin, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Early detection of neurodegeneration, and prediction of when neurodegenerative diseases will lead to symptoms, are critical for developing and initiating disease modifying treatments for these disorders. While each neurodegenerative disease has a typical pattern of early changes in the brain, these disorders are heterogeneous, and early manifestations can vary greatly across people. Methods for detecting emerging neurodegeneration in any part of the brain are therefore needed. Prior publications have described the use of Bayesian linear mixed-effects (BLME) modeling for characterizing the trajectory of change across the brain in healthy controls and patients with neurodegenerative disease. Here, we use an extension …

Understanding the effect of focal lesions (stroke) on brain structure-function traditionally relies on behavioral analyses and correlation with neuroimaging data. Here we use structural disconnection maps from individual lesions to derive a causal mechanistic generative whole-brain model able to explain both functional connectivity alterations and behavioral deficits induced by stroke. As compared to other models that use only the local lesion information, the similarity to the empirical fMRI connectivity increases when the widespread structural disconnection information is considered. The presented model classifies behavioral impairment severity with higher accuracy than other types of information (e.g.: functional connectivity). We assessed topological measures …

Preterm-born children have high rates of motor impairments, but mechanisms for early identification remain limited. We hypothesized that neonatal motor system functional connectivity (FC) would relate to motor outcomes at age two years; currently, this relationship is not yet well-described in very preterm (VPT; born <32 weeks' gestation) infants with and without brain injury. We recruited 107 VPT infants - including 55 with brain injury (grade III-IV intraventricular hemorrhage, cystic periventricular leukomalacia, post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus) - and collected FC data at/near term-equivalent age (35-45 weeks postmenstrual age). Correlation coefficients were used to calculate the FC between bilateral motor and visual cortices and thalami. At two years corrected-age, motor outcomes were assessed with the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd edition. Multiple imputation was used to estimate missing data, and regression models related FC measures to motor outcomes. Within the brain-injured group only, interhemispheric motor cortex FC was positively related to gross motor outcomes. Thalamocortical and visual FC were not related to motor scores. This suggests neonatal alterations in motor system FC may provide prognostic information about impairments in children with brain injury.

Amyloid-beta deposition is one of the hallmark pathologies in both sporadic Alzheimer's disease and autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease, the latter of which is caused by mutations in genes involved in amyloid-beta processing. Despite amyloid-beta deposition being a centrepiece to both sporadic Alzheimer's disease and autosomal-dominant Alzheimer's disease, some differences between these Alzheimer's disease subtypes have been observed with respect to the spatial pattern of amyloid-beta. Previous work has shown that the spatial pattern of amyloid-beta in individuals spanning the sporadic Alzheimer's disease spectrum can be reproduced with high accuracy using an epidemic spreading model which simulates the diffusion of amyloid-beta across …

Introduction Uncertainty is an inevitable part of healthcare and a source of confusion and challenge to decision-making. Several taxonomies of uncertainty have been developed, but mainly focus on decisions in clinical settings. Our goal was to develop a holistic model of uncertainty that can be applied to both clinical as well as public and global health scenarios. Methods We searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus and Google scholar in March 2021 for literature reviews, qualitative studies and case studies related to classifications or models of uncertainty in healthcare. Empirical articles were assessed for study limitations using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) …

Portfolio optimisation aims to efficiently find optimal proportions of portfolio assets, given certain constraints, and has been well-studied (Jin et al. 2016). While portfolio optimisation ascertains asset combinations most suited to investor requirements, numerous real-world problems impact its simplicity, e.g., investor preferences. Trading restrictions are also commonly faced, and must be met. However, in adding constraints to Markowitz’s basic mean-variance model, problem complexity increases, causing difficulties for exact optimisation approaches to find large problem solutions inside reasonable timeframes. The concern of this study concern is portfolio optimisation under three real-world constraints, using Markowitz’s mean-variance portfolio optimisation problem to obtain optimal …
