Urban And Rural Wage Disparities In Illinois, Josh S. Thum Jan 2022

Urban And Rural Wage Disparities In Illinois, Josh S. Thum

The Park Place Economist

Widespread urbanization in the United States over the years has changed the economic landscape of the country dramatically. This study explores the effect of working in a rural versus an urban area on wages in Illinois. General research suggests that there may be wage premium for working in urban areas, but this study takes a slightly different approach by focusing on county-by-county data as opposed to regional data. Labor market wages are considered in the context of efficient market theory. Linear regression models are run using data from the American Community Survey in order to explore whether there is a …

The Effect Of Race/Ethnicity, Health Status And Socioeconomic Variables On Poverty In The U.S., Lesley Ortega Jan 2022

The Effect Of Race/Ethnicity, Health Status And Socioeconomic Variables On Poverty In The U.S., Lesley Ortega

The Park Place Economist

Despite an overall decline in poverty rates the last 20 years, there persists major differences in poverty levels amongst minority racial and ethnic groups compared to the majority group. I study the poverty level of four different minority races and ethnicities and compare it to the poverty levels of white Americans. Additionally, I study the poverty level of individuals of poor health and compare it to those of fair, good, very good, or excellent health to determine whether such differences pertain to discrimination in both the labor and health care markets. To determine this, My sample is a cross-section from …

Can Money Buy You Mental Health? The Effects Of Economic And Non-Economic Factors On Mental Health, Daniel J. Maisch Jan 2022

Can Money Buy You Mental Health? The Effects Of Economic And Non-Economic Factors On Mental Health, Daniel J. Maisch

The Park Place Economist

This research paper examines the correlation between economic and non-economic factors and mental health. The Mental Health Hygiene Movement began in 1908 and led to the development of a new field of economic study: Mental Health Economics. Existing economic theories are applied to determine how pecuniary and non-pecuniary factors interact with mental health. Data from IPUMS Health Survey was used to run two linear regression models to evaluate how individuals’ social position, human capital characteristics, and demographic characteristics influence their mental health. Results social position, unemployment, educational attainment and mental health. Implications of the results suggest further analysis of mental …

History And Effectiveness Of Sponsorships In Esports, Michael D. Webb Jan 2022

History And Effectiveness Of Sponsorships In Esports, Michael D. Webb

The Park Place Economist

The purpose of this project is to investigate the types of companies that have historically been investing in esports sponsorships, and to examine the effects that heavy esports sponsoring can have on the financial success of a company. Esports is a large and rapidly growing industry, presenting many new opportunities for advertising. Applying the theory of the firm, this paper postulates that this recent success should be an indicator that companies involving themselves in sponsoring the esports industry should also be seeing financial success. Investigation of major sponsors found that historically mostly technology related companies have been involved, with some …

BACKGROUND: Automated wide complex tachycardia (WCT) differentiation into ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular wide complex tachycardia (SWCT) may be accomplished using novel calculations that quantify the extent of mean electrical vector changes between the WCT and baseline electrocardiogram (ECG). At present, it is unknown whether quantifying mean electrical vector changes within three orthogonal vectorcardiogram (VCG) leads (X, Y, and Z leads) can improve automated VT and SWCT classification.

METHODS: A derivation cohort of paired WCT and baseline ECGs was used to derive five logistic regression models: (i) one novel WCT differentiation model (i.e., VCG Model), (ii) three previously developed WCT …

Despite some success in secondary brain metastases, targeted or immune-based therapies have shown limited efficacy against primary brain malignancies such as glioblastoma (GBM). Although the intratumoral heterogeneity of GBM is implicated in treatment resistance, it remains unclear whether this diversity is observed within brain metastases and to what extent cancer cell-intrinsic heterogeneity sculpts the local immune microenvironment. Here, we profiled the immunogenomic state of 93 spatially distinct regions from 30 malignant brain tumors through whole-exome, RNA, and T-cell receptor sequencing. Our analyses identified differences between primary and secondary malignancies, with gliomas displaying more spatial heterogeneity at the genomic and neoantigen …

There are increasingly strict regulations surrounding the purchase and use of combustible tobacco products (i.e., cigarettes); simultaneously, the use of other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping products), has dramatically increased. However, public attitudes toward vaping vary widely, and the health effects of vaping are still largely unknown. As a popular social media, Twitter contains rich information shared by users about their behaviors and experiences, including opinions on vaping. It is very challenging to identify vaping-related tweets to source useful information manually. In the current study, we proposed to develop a detection model to accurately identify vaping-related tweets using machine …

Endogenous Opioid Systems Alterations In Pain And Opioid Use Disorder, Jessica A Higginbotham, Tamara Markovic, Nicolas Massaly, Jose A Morón Jan 2022

Endogenous Opioid Systems Alterations In Pain And Opioid Use Disorder, Jessica A Higginbotham, Tamara Markovic, Nicolas Massaly, Jose A Morón

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Decades of research advances have established a central role for endogenous opioid systems in regulating reward processing, mood, motivation, learning and memory, gastrointestinal function, and pain relief. Endogenous opioid systems are present ubiquitously throughout the central and peripheral nervous system. They are composed of four families, namely the μ (MOPR), κ (KOPR), δ (DOPR), and nociceptin/orphanin FQ (NOPR) opioid receptors systems. These receptors signal through the action of their endogenous opioid peptides β-endorphins, dynorphins, enkephalins, and nociceptins, respectfully, to maintain homeostasis under normal physiological states. Due to their prominent role in pain regulation, exogenous opioids-primarily targeting the MOPR, have been …

Sports Franchises As Catalysts For Tourism In An Urban Setting, David Proctor Jan 2022

Sports Franchises As Catalysts For Tourism In An Urban Setting, David Proctor

Doctoral

This research investigates the leverage of sports franchises by destination marketing organisations for their tourism potential. It adds to the literature in covering a hitherto under scrutinised field of tourism enquiry focusing on the role of globally renowned professional football teams as agents of tourism in the cities that host them. In doing so the study links theory to practice and provides policy makers with options for implementing initiatives in collaboration with sports franchises, resulting in benefits across the wider stakeholder environment.

Underpinned by a pragmatic philosophy, the research employs a mixed methods approach within a multiple case study design …

Job-Exposure Matrix: A Useful Tool For Incorporating Workplace Exposure Data Into Population Health Research And Practice, Alexis Descatha, Marc Fadel, Grace Sembajwe, Susan Peters, Bradley A Evanoff

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Workplace exposures to physical, chemical, and psychosocial factors account for a large burden of chronic diseases. Obtaining useful estimates of current and past workplace exposures is challenging, particularly in large general population studies. Job-exposure matrices (JEMs) are a useful tool for exposure assessment, particularly when no individual level exposure data are available. A JEM provides a cross-tabulation of job titles (sometimes combined with industry) and estimated exposures to workers carrying out these jobs during different time periods. The major limitation of JEMs is that they do not account for individual variation in exposures within the same job. This limitation is …

BACKGROUND: Multidrug therapy is a World Health Organization "best buy" for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases. CVD polypills, including ≥2 blood pressure medications, and a statin with or without aspirin, are an effective, scalable strategy to close the treatment gap that exists in many low- and middle-income countries, including Haiti. We estimated the number of Haitian adults eligible for an atherosclerotic CVD (ASCVD) polypill, and the number of potentially preventable CVD events if polypills were implemented nationally.

METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Haiti CVD Cohort, a population-based cohort of 3,005 adults ≥18 years in Port-au-Prince, to …

The Human Myocardium Harbors A Population Of Naive B-Cells With A Distinctive Gene Expression Signature Conserved Across Species, Kevin C Bermea, Nicolas Kostelecky, Sylvie T Rousseau, Chieh-Yu Lin, Luigi Adamo

2020-Current year OA Pubs

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac immunology studies in murine models have identified a sizeable population of myocardial B-cells and have shown that its modulation represents a promising strategy to develop novel therapies for heart failure. However, scarce data on B-cells in the human heart leaves unclear whether findings in rodents are relevant to human biology.

METHODS: We performed immunohistochemical stains to characterize the amount and distribution of B-cells in human hearts, analyzing both fresh and post-mortem tissue. To gain insight into the biology of human myocardial B-cells we analyzed publicly-available spatial transcriptomics and single-cell sequencing datasets of myocardial and peripheral blood mononuclear cells …

Lively Emu Dialogues: Activating Feminist Common Worlding Pedagogies, Mindy Blaise, Catherine Hamm Jan 2022

Lively Emu Dialogues: Activating Feminist Common Worlding Pedagogies, Mindy Blaise, Catherine Hamm

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper draws from a series of Place-thought walks that the authors took at an open-range zoo. It practices a feminist common worlds multispecies ethics to challenge the systems that maintain nature-culture divisions in early childhood education. Postdevelopmental perspectives (i.e., feminist environmental humanities, multispecies studies, Indigenous studies) are brought into conversation with early childhood education to consider how zoo-logics maintain binaries and hierarchical thinking. Zoo-logics are related to developmental, colonial, and Western ways of reasoning and being in the world. Two feminist approaches to ethics, (re)situating and dialoguing, are discussed and show how they are necessary for undermining binaries and …
