Mothers’ Understanding Of Brain Development In Early Childhood: A Qualitative Study In Brazil, Marina Sayuri Yakuwa, Letícia Pancieri, Sarah Neill, Mello Df De

School of Nursing and Midwifery

To analyze mothers’ understanding of child brain development and their stimulus practices with children in the first months of life. Qualitative research, with 18 Brazilian mothers, over 18 years of age, used semi-structured interviews to identify their perspectives on important healthcare outcomes, based on reflexive thematic analysis. Mother’s accounts displayed little understanding of child brain development, focusing on the development of neuropsychomotor skills. There was relative uncertainty about the daily care practices that would provide appropriate child stimuli, through which to provide promotion and protection of child development. Maternal knowledge about child brain development indicates a need to strengthen parenting …

Range Extension For Electromagnetic Detection Of Subsea Power And Telecommunication Cables, T. Szyrowski, A. Khan, R. Pemberton, S. K. Sharma, Y. Singh, R. Polvara

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Subsea cables protection afforded by burying a cable [beneath the sea bed] also means that the available methods for their survey are drastically reduced. From the existing methods only electromagnetics (EM) detection can penetrate the sea bed and provide an effective means for cable localisation. However, EM waves attenuate faster in conductive media such as sea water. EM localisation is considered a short range detection mechanism requiring the use of autonomous or remotely operated underwater platforms. In this paper, the authors investigate the range of EM detection and test detection distances exceeding one hundred metres. The EM signal was detected …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Transports across the continental shelf edge enhance shelf-sea production, remove atmospheric carbon and imply an active boundary to ocean circulation. We estimate relatively large overall transport across three contrasted sectors of north-west European shelf edge: the Celtic Sea south-west of Britain, the Malin-Hebrides shelf west of Scotland, the West Shetland shelf north of Scotland. The estimates derive from measurements in the project FASTNEt (Fluxes across sloping topography of the North East Atlantic): drifters, moored current meters, effective “diffusivity” from drifter dispersion and salinity surveys, other estimates of velocity variance contributing to exchange. Process contributions include transport by along-slope flow, internal …

Interrupting Immersive Immediacy, Jamie Harper

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Immersive experiences in theatre and digital games are often characterized by immediacy in space and time, focusing on the imminent action of the here and now. Live action roleplay (larp) practices, by contrast, can encourage reflexivity. Such reflexive play can support the agential capacities of players in participatory performance works to visualize and pursue alternative futures.

Wearable flexible sensors have developed rapidly in recent years because of their improved capacity to detect human motion in wide-ranging situations. In order to meet the requirements of flexibility and low detection limits, a new pressure sensor was fabricated based on electrospun barium titanate/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (BTO@MWCNTs) core-shell nanofibers coated with styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS). The sensor material (BTO@MWCNTs/SEBS) had a SEBS to BTO/MWCNTs mass ratio of 20:1 and exhibited an excellent piezoelectricity over a wide range of workable pressures from 1 to 50 kPa, higher output current of 56.37 nA and a superior piezoresistivity over a broad working range …

Fea Modelling And Environmental Assessment Of A Thin-Walled Composite Drive Shaft, Joseph Searle, Maozhou Meng, John Summerscales Jan 2022

Fea Modelling And Environmental Assessment Of A Thin-Walled Composite Drive Shaft, Joseph Searle, Maozhou Meng, John Summerscales

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) composites have been widely used in the automotive industry with the primary focus on reduced mass. However, there are relatively few reports on their application on power transmission components, such as drive shafts. This paper explores the feasibility of replacing the traditional structural steel by light weight FRP composites in a drive shaft. Three FRP composites are considered against a steel drive shaft; basalt/epoxy, carbon/epoxy, and CNT (carbon nanotubes) reinforced carbon/epoxy composites. The mechanical performance was analysed by finite element analysis (FEA) tool and classical laminate theory (CLT), while the environmental performance was evaluated by life …

Sanfilippo, Magdalena Blaszkowska, Maria Franchina, Seyhan Yazar, David Alonso-Caneiro, David Mackey, Samantha Sze-Yee Lee

Articles

Purpose Changes in retinal thickness are common in various ocular diseases. Transverse magnification due to differing ocular biometrics, in particular axial length, affects measurement of retinal thickness in different regions. This study evaluated the effect of axial length and refractive error on measured macular thickness in two community-based cohorts of healthy young adults.

Methods A total of 2160 eyes of 1247 community-based participants (18–30 years; 23.4% myopes, mean axial length = 23.6mm) were included in this analysis. Macular thickness measurements were obtained using a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (which assumes an axial length of 24.385mm). Using a custom program, retinal …

Normative Data On The Foveal Avascular Zone In A Young Healthy Irish Population Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography, Susan M. O'Shea, Veronica O'Dwyer, Grainne Scanlon

Articles

Purpose: To establish normative data on the size, shape and vascular profile of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in a young, healthy, Irish population, using the Cirrus 5000 HD-OCT. Certain diseases may alter FAZ appearance. Normative databases provide normal baseline values for comparison, thus improving diagnostic ability.

Methods: One hundred and fifty-four subjects aged 18–35 years old were recruited. Superficial FAZ area, diameter, circularity, ganglion cell layer, central macular thickness (CMT), vascular perfusion and density were measured using the Cirrus 5000. Axial length was measured with the IOL Master and blood pressure was measured using the Omron sphygmomanometer. …

Sense And The City: An Emotion Data Framework For Smart City Governance, Katharine S. Willis, Christian Nold Jan 2022

Sense And The City: An Emotion Data Framework For Smart City Governance, Katharine S. Willis, Christian Nold

School of Art, Design and Architecture

In the smart city agenda, data plays a key role in shaping governance and participation around urban planning, and this data is increasingly derived from sensors of all kinds. These sensors increasingly include physiological and sentiment analysis to gauge the emotional states of urban citizens. In urban planning, emotional data has so far been conceptualised as ‘people as sensors’ where data is used to create an aggregated emotion layer for real-time urban planning. This paper argues this approach does not enable citizens any meaningful participation in urban planning. In contrast, this paper demonstrates what emotion can ‘do’ when citizen actively …

Evaluating Social Sustainability In Jordanian Residential Neighborhoods: A Combined Expert-User Approach, Ahlam Ammar Sharif, Ala’A Saleh Alshdiefat, Muhammad Qasim Rana, Amit Kaushik, Olugbenga Timo Oladinrin Jan 2022

Evaluating Social Sustainability In Jordanian Residential Neighborhoods: A Combined Expert-User Approach, Ahlam Ammar Sharif, Ala’A Saleh Alshdiefat, Muhammad Qasim Rana, Amit Kaushik, Olugbenga Timo Oladinrin

School of Art, Design and Architecture

AbstractNeighborhood sustainability has assumed a pole position as a topic of interest in the past years, addressed through dedicated strands of most of the globally adopted sustainability rating tools, such as LEED and BREEAM. Considering sustainability assessment, the social sustainability of neighborhoods assumes a certain particularity, not only in terms of its high context dependence pertaining to its locality, but in its means of assessment as well, with people as a key potential evaluator for matters that are not bound to quantitative aspects. This research focused on developing a framework for rating social sustainability in neighborhoods, utilizing a quantitative approach …
