Novel plant ingredients continue to be key antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents in the fight against novel pathogens. Here, we have shown the antibacterial properties of Xeranthemum cylindraceum against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, and also C. albicans. Homogenates of X. cylindraceum were extracted with 95% ethanol and the extracts tested against various bacterial species. Blanks discs were soaked in extraction solvents as controls. X. cylindraceum demonstrated antimicrobial activity indicated by zones of inhibition against the following gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria: E. coli, P. vulgaris, E. cloacae, and K. pneumoniae, S. aureus, S. agalactiae, and S. pyogenes. …

Gender Disparities In Covid Deaths, Lisamarie Bennett

Student Publications and Presentations

The public health response to the breakout of COVID-19 requires fundamental changes in individual behavior, such as isolation at home or social distancing. However, the difference in COVID mortality rates between men and women could indicate gender differences in COVID-19 attitudes and behavior. In this study, we used a sample of 512 participants to examine whether there were relationships between gender and degree of adherence to social distancing and quarantining protocols. An independent samples t-Test was conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that men spend fewer days social distancing than women. The test was not significant. Another independent samples t-Test was …

A Study On Anti-Maskers, Cole Kessler, Lauren Toy

Student Publications and Presentations

In-depth interviews were conducted in September of 2021 with 15 Florida residents between the ages of 18-30 (8 males, 7 females). Our primary goal was to identify why these individuals choose not to wear face masks when required or highly recommended despite the potential legal, social, and health consequences. The researchers discovered that these individuals frame not wearing masks as physically harmless, and socially and legally acceptable. Specifically, these individuals justify their anti-masking actions using seven patterns arising from both their internal views and external influences. These patterns are: 1) Changing CDC mask wearing recommendations, 2) Mask wearing health consequences, …

Background:

Electronic nicotine delivery systems (known as electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes) increase risk for adverse health outcomes among naïve tobacco users, particularly youth and young adults. This vulnerable population is also at risk for exposed brand marketing and advertisement of e-cigarettes on social media. Understanding predictors of how e-cigarette manufacturers conduct social media advertising and marketing could benefit public health approaches to addressing e-cigarette use.

Objective:

This study documents factors that predict changes in daily frequency of commercial tweets about e-cigarettes using time series modeling techniques.

Methods:

We analyzed data on the daily frequency of commercial tweets about e-cigarettes collected …

Multi-Scale Threat Assessment Of Riverine Ecosystems In The Colorado River Basin, Lise Comte, Julian D. Olden, Stacy Lischka, Brett G. Dickson

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Freshwater ecosystems are facing a deepening biodiversity crisis. Developing robust indicators to assess ecological integrity across large spatial scales and identifying the specific threats and pathways of impairment are thus critically needed if we are to inform freshwater conservation strategies. Here we present the first comprehensive threat assessment across the Colorado River Basin – one of the largest and most endangered river basins in North America – using a spatial framework accounting for the wide range of human activities (land uses, transportation infrastructure, exploitative activities, water withdrawals), pathways (local footprint, overland runoff, upstream cumulative effects), and spatial extent of influence …

Tracking The Functions Of Ai As Paradata & Pursuing Archival Accountability, Jeremy Davet, Babak Hamidzadeh, Patricia Franks, Jenny Bunn

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

While a familiar term in fields like social science research and digital cultural heritage, 'paradata' has not yet been introduced conceptually into the archival realm. In response to an increasing number of experiments with machine learning and artificial intelligence, the InterPARES Trust AI research group proposes the definition of paradata as 'information about the procedure(s) and tools used to create and process information resources, along with information about the persons carrying out those procedures.' The utilization of this concept in archives can help to ensure that AI-driven systems are designed from the outset to honor the archival ethic, and to …

Twitter Bots’ Detection With Benford’S Law And Machine Learning, Sanmesh Bhosale, Fabio Di Troia

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have grown exponentially in terms of active users and have now become an influential factor in the formation of public opinions. For this reason, the use of bots and botnets for spreading misinformation on OSNs has become a widespread concern. Identifying bots and botnets on Twitter can require complex statistical methods to score a profile based on multiple features. Benford’s Law, or the Law of Anomalous Numbers, states that, in any naturally occurring sequence of numbers, the First Significant Leading Digit (FSLD) frequency follows a particular pattern such that they are unevenly distributed and reducing. This …

Efficient Routing Protection Algorithm Based On Optimized Network Topology, Haijun Geng, Zikun Jin, Jiangyuan Yao, Han Zhang, Zhiguo Hu, Bo Yang, Yingije Guo, Wei Wang, Qidong Zhang, Guoao Duan

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Network failures are unavoidable and occur frequently. When the network fails, intra-domain routing protocols deploying on the Internet need to undergo a long convergence process. During this period, a large number of messages are discarded, which results in a decline in the user experience and severely affects the quality of service of Internet Service Providers (ISP). Therefore, improving the availability of intra-domain routing is a trending research question to be solved. Industry usually employs routing protection algorithms to improve intra-domain routing availability. However, existing routing protection schemes compute as many backup paths as possible to reduce message loss due to …

Taking Stock: Open Questions And Unfinished Business Under The Vawa Amendments To The Indian Civil Rights Act, Jordan Gross

Faculty Law Review Articles

The primary statutory tool for federal regulation of Tribal court criminal procedure is the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968 (ICRA). ICRA replicated most of the procedural protections in the Bill of Rights applicable to the States, as then interpreted by the Supreme Court. ICRA also sets out procedures Tribes must extend to criminal defendants in their courts, caps their sentencing authority, and defines their criminal jurisdiction.

Some parts of Indian country are the most dangerous places in the United States today, particularly for indigenous women and girls. They are exposed to a higher level of personal violence than any …

Developing a proper view of the nature of science (NOS) amongst teachers and students has been the goal of science education for decades. This article discusses an innovative activity designed for training preservice science teachers on NOS. We endorse an approach according to which several aspects of NOS can be explicitly discussed and explained. This activity is an extended version of a tangram activity introduced by Choi (2004). Aside from introducing NOS elements covered by Choi, our tangram activity also introduces the following elements: (1) theories are valid products of science, (2) the role of subjectivity and bias in science, …
