Background: People with opioid use disorder and severe infections may complete their prolonged courses of outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy at a post-acute care facility due to adherence and safety concerns. We hypothesized that treatment with medications for opioid use disorder, such as methadone and buprenorphine, would increase antibiotic completion in these facilities.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of people with opioid use disorder and severe infections who were discharged from the University of Maryland Medical Center to a post-acute care facility to complete intravenous antibiotic therapy. The primary outcome was completion of outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy. We compared …

Progressive loss of pancreatic β-cell functional mass and anti-diabetic drug responsivity are classic findings in diabetes, frequently attributed to compensatory insulin hypersecretion and β-cell exhaustion. However, loss of β-cell mass and identity still occurs in mouse models of human KATP-gain-of-function induced Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus (NDM), in the absence of insulin secretion. Here we studied the temporal progression and mechanisms underlying glucotoxicity-induced loss of functional β-cell mass in NDM mice, and the effects of sodium-glucose transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) therapy. Upon tamoxifen induction of transgene expression, NDM mice rapidly developed severe diabetes followed by an unexpected loss of insulin content, decreased …

Evaluation Of The Quality Changes Of Common Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.) Varieties During Storage In Hermetic Polyethylene Bags, Micah Rambeka Momanyi
All Master’s Theses
Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are extensively cultivated in sub-Saharan Africa as a cheap source of proteins, starch, dietary fiber, and excellent mineral salts and vitamins. However, beans are lost due to poor post-harvest handling and storage practices that provide insufficient protection against storage insect pests. Therefore, farmers are forced to apply insecticides more than once in a storage period to achieve protection. Excessive use of chemicals is not safe for health and is uneconomical. Hermetic techniques for storage have attracted increasing attention in recent years as chemical-free methods to preserve food grains and protect them against storage insect pests. Whereas …

The art of wax modelling or ceroplastics has an ancient origin, from early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. It was re-discovered between the 13th - 14th centuries in Florence with the cult of votive offerings; with the advent of Neoclassicism it extended into a more scientific environment, flourishing in the study of normal and pathological anatomy, obstetrics, zoology and botany. On the 7th and 8th June 2019, the 2nd edition of the International Congress on Wax Modelling took place in the University of Padua. The meeting followed that held in September 2017 at the Gordon Museum of Pathology, King's College …

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a polymer that is expansively employed in denture base construction due to its low cost, aesthetics, lightweight, reparability, and processability. Nevertheless, this material is not ideal to fulfill the mechanical and physical characteristics of dental restorations. Despite the popularity of the thermal polymerization method, the main shortcoming is the prolonged curing period. Thus, correctly selecting a polymerization cycle and post-polymerization treatment is needed to achieve promising outcomes. In autoclave polymerization, pressure plays a crucial function in accelerating the initial polymerization as well as decreasing the pores and remaining monomer level, thereby improving the flexural strength. Besides, …

Utilization Of Silicon Dioxide Powder From Industrial Wastes As Novel Filler In Rubber Isolator Application, Amorn Ajinsamajan, Adisai Rungvichaniwat, Anuwat Saetung
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
The silicon dioxide powder (SP) was an industrial waste and obtained from the silicon metal industry in Thailand. The effect of SP loading on cure characteristics, mechanical, dynamic and endurance properties in natural rubber were investigated and compared to calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and unfilled natural rubber, respectively. Results revealed that the addition of SP significantly affected the cure characteristics and mechanical properties. An increasing content of SP increased the hardness, modulus, tensile strength and tear strength due to a higher SP-rubber interaction but decreased the elongation at break since higher SP in rubber matrix resulting in lesser mobility of rubber …

The large production volume combined with the high lignocellulose content makes elephant dung an attractive and underutilized biomass resource, but also presents waste management problems for elephant orphanages. This study explored the conversion of elephant dung into biochars by slow pyrolysis at 500°C for the recovery of phosphate. The unmodified biochar (BC500) had a specific surface area (SBET) of 62.5 m2×g-1 with point of zero charge (pHPZC) of 7.7. Biochar modification with MgCl2 (MgBC500) and FeCl3 (FeBC500) by pre-pyrolysis treatment affected the SBET (48.7 m2×g-1 and 259.4 m2×g-1, respectively) and pHPZC (8.7 and 3.3, respectively). In FeBC500, Fe was present …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In soda-lime glass manufacturing, evaporation of volatile compounds from glass melt is the origin of the dust emission from glass tank furnace. The exhausted dust then is deposited on the regenerator and is needed to be removed. Thus, this study focuses on using the dust from melting glass in glass production. The glass batches were prepared from 0 wt% to 10 wt% of the exhausted dust from soda-lime glass production as a substitution of the total raw materials. The analysis of phase and chemical composition of the dust by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and x-ray fluorescence technique (XRF) indicated that …

A novel investigation on structural and DC conductivity of Eu2O3 activated heavy metal oxide boro-tellurite (BBTE) glasses were analyzed. The boro-bismuth-tellurite glass samples doped with europium trioxide were fabricated by the conventional melt quenching method. The microstructural and structural studies of the glasses have been done by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The DC conductivity of the BBTE samples has been studied at the frequency range 40Hz-6MHz and in the temperature range 303-453K. The XRD and SEM, confirm the non-crystalline and homogeneous properties of prepared glasses. The DC conductivity of glasses obeys Arrhenius behavior and DC …
