2022 Crummer Suntrust Portfolio Recommendations: Crummer Investment Management 23rd Anniversary, Jason Philips, Michael Capra, Denis Golubev, Connor Jensen, Kovi Katz

Crummer Truist Portfolios

SunTrust (now Truist) endowed this portfolio to provide scholarships for future Crummer students and to give current students a practical, hands-on learning opportunity. This year, we are pleased to be able to disburse $55,000 to be used for scholarships. We are extremely grateful for SunTrust’s generosity and investment in higher education. We have all learned a great deal from this experience and the responsibility of managing real money. Our first challenge is to establish a portfolio position that takes advantage of economic opportunities while avoiding unnecessary risk and conforming to the Crummer SunTrust Investment Policy Statement (IPS). We are also …

Huddle Implementation In The Perioperative Setting, Tina Thomas Jan 2022

Huddle Implementation In The Perioperative Setting, Tina Thomas

DNP Projects

Background: Communication is essential for safe and effective patient care. In the perioperative setting, information sharing is critical to care coordination. Lack of communication between caregivers can lead to medical errors. Evidence shows that huddles lead to increased communication, satisfaction, and engagement between team members resulting in better patient outcomes. Huddles are short, less than 10-minute gatherings that focus on the daily schedule, identify potential obstacles, explain unique needs, and discuss preceding day issues.

Objectives: This project aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of huddles on employee satisfaction, engagement, and communication of healthcare workers while also determining if huddles were …

Evaluating The Use Of A Diet Screening Tool For Diabetes And Weight Management In Primary Care, Christie Mcbride

DNP Projects

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a prominent disease and leading cause of death in the nation. Many complications can develop when glucose levels are poorly controlled. When patients receive education and support in diabetes self-management, including individualized dietary interventions, it leads to improved glycemic control.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate the incorporation of a diet recall tool, Starting the Conversation (STC), in the standard care for diabetic patients with abnormal body mass index (BMI). The study aimed to examine: (1) patient opinion of the intervention and (2) healthcare provider satisfaction with use …

Examining The Impact Of A Protein Intervention To Improve Outcomes In Frail Perioperative Candidates: A Feasibility Study, Anna M. Rose Jan 2022

Examining The Impact Of A Protein Intervention To Improve Outcomes In Frail Perioperative Candidates: A Feasibility Study, Anna M. Rose

DNP Projects

Background: Frailty is a syndrome or grouping of clinical characteristics that collectively increases one’s vulnerability to acute and external health stressors. Higher rates of frailty are present in oncology surgical patients and is a predictor of postoperative complications, as well as increased morbidity and mortality. Long- and short-term survival of surgical oncology patients is worse in frail patients than robust patients. Prehabilitation interventions during the planning phase of surgical intervention may serve to mitigate already known health concerns prior to inflicting the stressor that is surgical intervention.

Purpose: To measure the feasibility of an educational prehabilitative nutritional intervention aimed at …

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Working with educators, artists, young children, and materials to make meaning with place affected by human environmental impacts, this study zooms in on a documentary of dying birds who’ve swallowed plastics. The birds’ habitat is an eye-opening 2,000 miles from the nearest continent and is infested with trash and plastic. The birds ingest many shiny plastic bits and slowly die. This research paper focuses in on experiences of sharing this documentary with teacher educators at an international conference, then educators in our own context, and then with early childhood artists working in reuse materials. The research captures a series of …

On-Campus Or Off-Campus? - That Is Still The Question: Mahanoy Area Sch. Dist. V. B.L. And The Supreme Court’S New Digital Frontier, Kristopher L. Caudle Jan 2022

On-Campus Or Off-Campus? - That Is Still The Question: Mahanoy Area Sch. Dist. V. B.L. And The Supreme Court’S New Digital Frontier, Kristopher L. Caudle

Campbell Law Review

This Article examines the contours of the “on-campus” versus “off-campus” distinction embedded in the Supreme Court’s opinion in Mahoney School District v. B.L. This Article argues that B.L., and the Court’s broader Tinker doctrine, fail to adequately address modern student speech issues, especially student speech arising in extracurricular programs and activities. This Article proposes a two-part legal framework for future courts to analyze student speech issues in an increasingly digital post-pandemic world.

The Modern Origins And Evolution Of The North Carolina Political Question Doctrine, William C. Mckinney Jan 2022

The Modern Origins And Evolution Of The North Carolina Political Question Doctrine, William C. Mckinney

Campbell Law Review

This Article explores the development of the political question doctrine in North Carolina jurisprudence. The Article describes the federal origins of the doctrine and charts its adoption in North Carolina, first through the litigation of fundamental rights cases and later in separation of powers matters. The political question doctrine is a prudential doctrine exercised by courts that serves as a bar to relief on matters where the coordinate political branches of government—the executive and legislative—may have primacy. This Article concludes that the doctrine has been narrowed over time in North Carolina, though it may still be utilized in certain instances.

Unmasking The Student Impostor: Remedies For The Impostor Phenomenon To Promote Student Success In The Clinic, Allison J. Durham, Stefanie Anderson Jan 2022

Unmasking The Student Impostor: Remedies For The Impostor Phenomenon To Promote Student Success In The Clinic, Allison J. Durham, Stefanie Anderson

School of Physical and Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Healthcare graduate students are constantly adapting to various practice settings and increased rigor to meet program expectations. This increasing level of high expectations and having to perform in front of competent clinicians often induce feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and fraudulent characteristics of a student impostor. Individuals who identify with the impostor phenomenon may set high self-standards of performance to feel worthy, feel fraudulent, and lack a sense of belonging, and often attribute personal successes to external sources or situations. Identifying the student impostor is the initial step to fostering student success in the clinic. Clinical and academic faculty suspecting a …

Shirley Caesar And The Politics Of Validating Sexual Agency, Angela Nelson Jan 2022

Shirley Caesar And The Politics Of Validating Sexual Agency, Angela Nelson

Popular Culture Faculty Publications

Black gospelwoman and pastor Shirley Ann Caesar Williams, better known as “Shirley Caesar” to her listeners over the last several decades, entered a professionalization phase of her ministry and career from 1958 to 1966 when she joined and performed with The Caravans. Being a Caravan member brought with it the possibility of being in compromising situations while on the road, which would expose Caesar—a Black woman—to the possibility of sexual (and racial) violence. Caesar’s first night as a Caravan in 1958 provided such a circumstance, a failed sexual advance that she describes in Chapter 5, “On the Road with the …
