A Novel Approach To Damage Detection Using Structural Health Monitoring Data And Convolutional Neural Networks, Dominic Emory
A Novel Approach To Damage Detection Using Structural Health Monitoring Data And Convolutional Neural Networks, Dominic Emory
Master's Theses and Capstones
This study investigates the efficiency of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to detect structural damage from measured structural response. In this regard, strain gages were used to measure structural response from live loads. Data used during experimentation was gathered through the testing of a full-scale concrete bridge mockup. The test captured the response of the mock-up bridge utilizing 24 transversely oriented resistance-based strain gages under similar loading conditions, but with different levels of damage induced. There are three levels of damage the bridge was subjected to; crash-induced damage to the barrier, transverse cut on the entire barrier, and transverse cut along …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Studies in vertebrate genomics require sampling from a broad range of tissue types, taxa, and localities. Recent advancements in long-read and long-range genome sequencing have made it possible to produce high-quality chromosome-level genome assemblies for almost any organism. However, adequate tissue preservation for the requisite ultra-high molecular weight DNA (uHMW DNA) remains a major challenge. Here we present a comparative study of preservation methods for field and laboratory tissue sampling, across vertebrate classes and different tissue types. Results: We find that storage temperature was the strongest predictor of uHMW fragment lengths. While immediate flash-freezing remains the sample preservation gold …
Appealing Compelled Disclosures In Discovery That Threaten First Amendment Rights, Richard L. Heppner Jr.
Appealing Compelled Disclosures In Discovery That Threaten First Amendment Rights, Richard L. Heppner Jr.
Law Faculty Publications
Last year, the Supreme Court held in Americans for Prosperity Foundation v. Bonta that a California anti-fraud policy compelling charities to disclose the identities of their major donors violated the First Amendment. That holding stems from the 1958 case NAACP v. Alabama where the Court held that a discovery order compelling the NAACP to disclose the names of its members violated the First Amendment right of free association because of the members’ justifiable fear of retaliation.
In the over sixty years since NAACP v. Alabama, the Court has only decided a handful of cases about how compelled disclosures of …

Diabetic Self-Management Education Program Evaluation, Amanda Thomas
Diabetic Self-Management Education Program Evaluation, Amanda Thomas
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, caused by impaired insulin secretions resulting in high hemoglobin A1C levels. Education is beneficial in reducing these as an additive to lifestyle and drug therapy. This student project reflects a program evaluation for a patient diabetes self-management education (DSME) intervention in one small rural outpatient system. DSME classes address the comprehensive blend of clinical, educational, psychosocial, and behavioral aspects of care needed for the daily management of people living with type II diabetes. Three months after completing a DSME the person experiencing type II diabetes has a repeat Hemoglobin A1C level taken …
Are Times A-Changin’? Exploring Current Perceptions Of Individuals Based On Sexual And Relationship Orientations, Leah Howard, Kenneth Barideaux
Are Times A-Changin’? Exploring Current Perceptions Of Individuals Based On Sexual And Relationship Orientations, Leah Howard, Kenneth Barideaux
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
The purpose of this study was to explore if there were any significant differences in perceptions of couples based on their sexual orientation (heterosexual or homosexual) and their relationship orientation (monogamous or consensually nonmonogamous).
As perceptions held by individuals influence collective perceptions when they are largely held in common, there is value in capturing culturally current perceptions of individuals to assess if social shifts may be on the horizon. To measure the perceptions of individuals with regards to sexual and relationship orientation, a sample of 37 college students were instructed to read narrative paragraphs about four couples.
Participants were then …
Femininity As Disability In Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar., Shae Kirkus, Monika Shehi Herr
Femininity As Disability In Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar., Shae Kirkus, Monika Shehi Herr
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Disability studies is often associated with the treatment of people with physical disabilities, which are defined as features of non-normative human bodies. However, analyzed through the lens of the classical idea of the ideal body, which was first and foremost male, femininity itself is also atypical and therefore confines women to the realm of being disabled.
Sylvia Plath’s autobiographical novel The Bell Jar shows how the feminine is a disability in and of itself. As Plath’s main character and narrator, Esther Greenwood, spirals into her own madness, her condition is only worsened by societal reactions to her declining mental health. …

The Boy From 6b: How Only Murders In The Building Created Groundbreaking Television, Lauren E. Reitz, Monika Shehi Herr
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Non-disabled actors continue to be cast over disabled actors to portray disabled characters, and disabled storylines are told from an able-bodied perspective. This paper explores how Only Murders in the Building set an example for approaching projects featuring disabled actors and roles while maintaining a complex storyline in the episode titled "The Boy from 6B" (2021).
Analyzing this episode through the lens of the classical idea of anmut shows how it subverted the typical viewing experience of watching a storyline that features disabled characters from an able-bodied perspective. Anmut, as a rhetorical concept, recognizes that the value of physical …
Disablist Propaganda: Evil On One Hand, And A Hook For The Other, Lauren Reitz, Richard Murphy
Disablist Propaganda: Evil On One Hand, And A Hook For The Other, Lauren Reitz, Richard Murphy
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Despite its publication by J.M. Barrie in 1904, Peter and Wendy has attracted very little critical attention. Perhaps the story is so beloved for its adventure-packed plot, and sweet message about a boy who never grows old, that even scholars have trouble criticizing it—despite its obvious calls for analysis as film and literary adaptations continue to appear.
However, most concerning is an apparent gap in the analysis of the story’s disabled villain, Captain Hook, through a modern Disability Studies lens. The following textual analysis of Captain Hook will serve to call attention to the way his disability plays into his …
The Minor Fall, The Major Lift? College Students Do Not Report Listening To Mood-Congruent Music, Hannah N. Leonhardt, James Bunde, Andrew Beer
The Minor Fall, The Major Lift? College Students Do Not Report Listening To Mood-Congruent Music, Hannah N. Leonhardt, James Bunde, Andrew Beer
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Music has become an integral part of daily life in Western culture. Individuals use music for various purposes including emotion regulation, and each individual has different tendencies and preferences for how they use music. Previous research indicates that people are likely to listen to mood-congruent music and that personality characteristics--specifically those of the Big 5 personality inventory-- may predict music preference and how people choose to use music for emotion regulation.
To further address these questions, we assessed personality and music usage in a sample of undergraduate students. We predicted that affect-related traits like Neuroticism and Extraversion would predict both …
The Social Cognitive Model Of Leadership Perceptions: Proposing A Dynamic, Integrated Theory Of Leadership Identification And Appraisal, Leah Howard, Justin Travis
The Social Cognitive Model Of Leadership Perceptions: Proposing A Dynamic, Integrated Theory Of Leadership Identification And Appraisal, Leah Howard, Justin Travis
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
This paper is an exploration of the relationships between the stereotype content model, implicit leadership theory, and leadership behavior theory with a focus on illuminating the elements held in common by these three theories and identifying the positive implications of integrating these theories into an inclusive social cognitive model for future leadership research.
After briefly summarizing the three focal theories, we highlight the correspondence between them. We then establish the importance of organizing these theories into a comprehensive model which can be used to understand and explain leadership from a cohesive, multidimensional approach. In proposing such a theoretical model, we …
Difficult Dialogues: Toward Building Community Through Conversation, Jessica Rhyne, David Marlow
Difficult Dialogues: Toward Building Community Through Conversation, Jessica Rhyne, David Marlow
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
This paper examines the construct of community: its nature, ontological significance, and role in society, as well as determining factors in community fragmentation and the role constructive dialogues can play in community building. With this knowledge, a campus conversation was orchestrated to explore students’ perceptions of our community and wicked problems confronting our world.
Students were asked the ways in which they engage with their communities, what barriers they identify as inhibiting community cohesion, and potential paths for progress. Challenges with orchestration as well as student responses are discussed.
This paper concludes that, among this demographic, there is very little …
The Challenge-Hindrance Model Of Stress And Its Intersections With The Conservation Of Resources Theory, Divya A. Srijay, Justin Travis Dr.
The Challenge-Hindrance Model Of Stress And Its Intersections With The Conservation Of Resources Theory, Divya A. Srijay, Justin Travis Dr.
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
This paper briefly summarizes the challenge-hindrance model of stress (CHM) through its basis in the transactional theory of stress, and it integrates modern theories of stress found in social psychology and management literature. In doing so, we provide a content map/process model to guide future research that can contribute to the creation of a more effective measure of the secondary appraisals of stressors.
Although psychometric and related statistical concerns regarding extant measures have been noted and discussed in the literature, our hope is that the proposed model may aid in the conceptualization of the nomological network of the stress process …
“I’M Sorry”: An Original Song For Voice And Chordal Accompaniment, Lauren T. Steadman, Nolan Stolz
“I’M Sorry”: An Original Song For Voice And Chordal Accompaniment, Lauren T. Steadman, Nolan Stolz
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
Below is an original song written for mezzo-soprano voice and accompaniment. The purpose of this article is to provide information on the songwriting process that I used by discussing the melody, harmony, and lyrics and showing how they were developed and completed.
This article discusses and defines musical terms for musicians and non-musicians alike to show why certain decisions were made. I begin by discussing the lyrics of the song and their meaning. I will reference methods included in J. Perricone’s book Great Songwriting Techniques to discuss how the chords and melodies relate to the lyrics.
The song is notated …

The Ukrainian Immigrant Experience In South Carolina, Nataliya S. Vykhovanets, Alexander Lorenz
University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal
The following paper focuses on the Ukrainian immigrant community living in the Upstate region of South Carolina and the vast differences in immigrant experiences of former and more recent Ukrainian Immigrants. Ukrainians have been migrating to the US since the late 1800s, but unfortunately, there are few studies available on this ethnic group.
To give readers a background on the topic, this paper first documents the history of Ukrainian immigration to the US by describing and comparing the four waves of Ukrainian migration to the United States. The following section introduces a questionnaire, created to collect data on the Ukrainian …
