Dna Stability In Aqueous Solutions: A Case Study On Poly A - Poly T Duplex Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Haripriya Chennuru
Dna Stability In Aqueous Solutions: A Case Study On Poly A - Poly T Duplex Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Haripriya Chennuru
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This thesis relies on molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which apply the AMBER software package to analyze the structural stability, energetics, and dynamics of Poly A - Poly T DNA duplexes. This work is mainly concerned with testing configurations of non-bonded interaction cutoffs (12 Å and 15 Å) on the Generalized Born solvation models (IGB1 and IGB2) to determine the most appropriate conditions regarding computation time and physical reliability in DNA molecular dynamics. The solvation models enable effective simulation of solvent effects, facilitating the calculation of simulation parameters to evaluate structural stability within different environmental conditions. Overall, the performance indicates that …

Obesity Does Not Significantly Impact Clinical Outcomes Following Anterior Cervical Discectomy And Fusion, Ishan Shah, Alejandro Perez-Albela, Riya Shah, Charles Furlong, Puru Sadh, John Czerwein, Alan Daniels, Bryce A Basques
SKMC Student Presentations and Publications
BACKGROUND: With obesity rates rising among patients undergoing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and more procedures shifting to outpatient settings, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of body mass index (BMI) on complications, sagittal alignment, and patient-reported outcomes (PROs).
METHODS: A prospectively maintained database of 302 patients who underwent ACDF for myelopathy or radiculopathy between 2020 and 2022 at a single academic center was analyzed. Patients were stratified into four BMI categories: normal (18.5-< 25), overweight (25-< 30), obese class I (30-< 35), and obese class II/III (≥35). Collected data included demographics, comorbidities, perioperative variables, radiographic measures (cSVA, Cobb angle, etc.), and PROs (VAS, NDI). Univariate regression compared demographics, alignment, and PROs, while multivariate analyses assessed complications and perioperative factors.
RESULTS: BMI was not independently associated with higher rates of postoperative complications, including adjacent segment disease, subsidence, reoperation, or other adverse events. Patients in …

Xbrl-Formatted Financial Reporting And The Feedback Effect Of Price, Young Jun Cho, Ying-Chi Huang, Holly I. Yang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We examine whether the SEC’s XBRL-formatted financial reporting mandate allows investors to better process public financial information, reducing the extent to which managers learn private information from stock price. We find a significant decrease in the investment-price sensitivity for firms that started to file their 10-Ks in an XBRL format, consistent with a reduction in the cost of information processing crowding out private information in stock price. We also find that the decrease in the investment-price sensitivity associated with XBRL adoption is more pronounced for firms with higher business and information complexity and for firms with higher incentives for managers …

Female Ceos And Esg Visual Expressions, Ziming Guo, Beng Wee Goh, Dan Li, Yuan Wang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Prior studies have shown that women possess unique personality traits that cause them to communicate differently than men do. Hence, we investigate whether the presence of female CEOs affects the use of visual expressions in a firm’s ESG report (“ESG visual expressions”). Using detailed disclosure data from ESG reports in China, we find that firms with female CEOs use more ESG visual expressions. This result is stronger when the firm prioritizes ESG performance, when the female CEO is more powerful, and when there are more women on the top management team. ESG visual expressions are also positively associated with the …

Non-Audit Services And Knowledge Spillover: Evidence From Audit Hours And Billing Rates, Jaeyoon Yu, Yongsuk Yun, Yoonseok Zang
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Using audit hours from firms listed on the Korea Exchange as a direct proxy for audit effort, this study examines whether non-audit services (NAS) purchased from audit firms improve audit efficiency. Our results reveal that the ratio of NAS fees to total fees paid to audit firms is associated with lower audit hours and audit fees, but it is not significantly related to audit billing rates. The reduction in audit effort associated with NAS is more pronounced when NAS provided are audit-related, and for clients who hire Big 4 auditors, have short-tenured auditors, and report a profit. Further, using path …

Addressing Systemic Workforce Challenges In General Practice—A Qualitative Study Of General Practitioners In Ireland, Uzair Shabbir, Ray O’Connor, Joe Macdonagh, Andrew O’Regan
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Background General practice across Europe faces a workforce crisis, with a projected shortfall of up to 1660 general practitioners in Ireland by 2028. While policy interventions have been proposed, a gap remains between the Irish health system's strategic objectives and the day-to-day realities experienced by general practitioners. Objective The aim of this study is to explore the perspectives of Irish general practitioners in addressing recruitment and retention challenges in general practice. Specific objectives include identifying solutions and the supports necessary for sustainable future general practice. Methods A qualitative study design was employed, utilizing semi-structured online interviews with general practitioners recruited …

Age And Sex Impact The Role Of Thrombospondin-2 And Thrombospondin-5 In Response To Hindlimb Ischemia, Irene Helenowski, Ashley Peters, Melissa Rangel, Corinne Bunn Md, Xuerong Wang, Kristopher Maier, Vivian Gahtan
Biostatistics Collaborative Core: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Peripheral arterial disease progression to critical limb ischemia remains a significant burden in the aged, necessitating revascularization. Therapies to enhance neovascularization, such as angiogenesis or arteriogenesis, may provide an option for patients not suitable for surgery. The thrombospondins (TSPs) are secreted matricellular glycoproteins, with TSP-1, TSP-2, and TSP-5 implicated in neovascularization. Currently, there is little data regarding the effects of TSP-2, TSP-5, sex, and aging on angiogenesis and arteriogenesis. In vitro, the effect of TSP-2 or TSP-5 on early or late passage endothelial cell (EC) tubule formation or disruption was assessed. In vivo, angiogenesis, and arteriogenesis in male and female, …

Objective: To establish a framework for validating candidate biomarkers of cerebral small vessel diseases (SVD) associated with cognitive impairment and characterize individuals enrolled by the MarkVCID2 consortium under this framework.
Methods: Participants age 60 to 90 years were enrolled across 17 MarkVCID2 sites. Recruitment was targeted to enrich in cognitive symptoms (mild dementia, mild cognitive impairment, subjective cognitive decline), defined risk factors (diabetes mellitus, advanced hypertension), and Black/African American, White, and Hispanic/Latino subgroups. Enrolled participants underwent baseline visits that included cognitive testing, multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and biofluid collection. Provisional risk for SVD-related cognitive decline was estimated primarily by …
