Geospatial Analysis Of Urban Heat Islands And Heat Vulnerability In Chattogram, Bangladesh: Implications For Public Health Risks, Mst Sanjida Alam

Student Publications [Scholarly]

Rapid urbanization and land use change are intensifying the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and its associated health risks. It is the most common problem in the cities across the Global South. Chattogram the second-largest city in Bangladesh that has highly urbanized and experiencing transformation of croplands and vegetation into impervious surfaces. The changes contribute to the increase in the surface temperature and vulnerability of urban residents. This study aims to determine spatiotemporal patterns of UHI between 2011 and 2024 and the Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) for 2024 and its associated health risk of Chattogram District. The HVI was developed …

Management Of Mechanical Ventilation In Emergency Medicine: A Scoping Review, Robert J Klemisch, Mitchell S Hymowitz, Ryan J Alcantara, Brendan F Mullan, Margaret L Davis, Rachel Blume, Nicholas J Johnson, Brian M Fuller Feb 2026

Management Of Mechanical Ventilation In Emergency Medicine: A Scoping Review, Robert J Klemisch, Mitchell S Hymowitz, Ryan J Alcantara, Brendan F Mullan, Margaret L Davis, Rachel Blume, Nicholas J Johnson, Brian M Fuller

2020-Current year OA Pubs

OBJECTIVES: Invasive mechanical ventilation is used for approximately 250,000 emergency medicine (EM) patients annually and continues to increase. Despite rising volumes, EM clinicians receive limited training in ventilation management. Much of the existing evidence is derived from other environments, which may not fully apply to the unique conditions of EM. This scoping review broadly categorizes literature on invasive ventilation specific to EM patients and clinicians and identifies knowledge gaps to direct future research.

METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist guidelines, this review comprehensively mapped the literature on optimizing invasive mechanical ventilation …

A Runtime-Adaptive Transformer Neural Network Accelerator On Fpgas, Ehsan Kabir, Jason D. Bakos, David Andrews, Miaoqing Huang Feb 2026

A Runtime-Adaptive Transformer Neural Network Accelerator On Fpgas, Ehsan Kabir, Jason D. Bakos, David Andrews, Miaoqing Huang

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transformer neural networks (TNN) excel in natural language processing (NLP), machine translation, and computer vision (CV) without relying on recurrent or convolutional layers. However, they have high computational and memory demands, particularly on resource constrained devices like FPGAs. Moreover, transformer models vary in processing time across applications, requiring custom models with specific parameters. Designing custom accelerators for each model is complex and time-intensive. Some custom accelerators exist with no runtime adaptability, and they often rely on sparse matrices to reduce latency. However, hardware designs become more challenging due to the need for application-specific sparsity patterns. This paper introduces ADAPTOR, a …

Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is an endemic herpesvirus implicated in autoimmunity, cancer and neurological disorders. Although primary infection is often subclinical, persistent EBV infection can drive immune dysregulation and long-term complications. Despite the ubiquity of infection, the determinants of EBV persistence following primary exposure remain poorly understood, although human genetic variation partially contributes to this phenotypic spectrum13. Here we demonstrate that existing whole genome sequencing (WGS) data of human populations can be used to quantify persistent EBV DNA. Using WGS and health record data from the UK Biobank (n = 490,560) and All of Us ( …

City Farm Slo Sheep Shed Concrete Slab Installation, Jake Simkins, Elijah Burt, Finnbarr Kelly Feb 2026

City Farm Slo Sheep Shed Concrete Slab Installation, Jake Simkins, Elijah Burt, Finnbarr Kelly

Construction Management

The City Farm SLO Sheep Shed Foundation Slab project, undertaken by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo Construction Management students, aimed to improve the structural integrity and longevity of an existing livestock shelter at City Farm SLO. Initiated in coordination with Shane Lovell, owner and operator of City Farm SLO, and guided by Construction Management faculty member Mark Montoya, the project integrated community service with practical application of structural concrete construction principles. The scope involved temporarily removing an existing sheep shed from within an active livestock pen, preparing subgrade in muddy winter conditions, and constructing a reinforced 5-inch, 4500 …

A ‘Digital Dominion’: Launching The Commonwealth Model Law On Digital Trade, Craig Atkinson Feb 2026

A ‘Digital Dominion’: Launching The Commonwealth Model Law On Digital Trade, Craig Atkinson

Centre for Digital Law

A legislative text published for the benefit of its 56 member countries, the Commonwealth of Nations officially adopted the Model Law on Digital Trade (MLDT) in September 2025. The Commonwealth MLDT addresses a persistent barrier to digital trade (i.e., all trade that is digitally ordered and/or digitally delivered): the laws of many jurisdictions do not sufficiently recognise the legal requirements of electronic commerce (e-commerce) and continue to emphasise paper-bases for commercial communications and transactions in domestic and cross-border contexts.

The Religious Groups Of Mecca And Medina In The Sixth And Seventh Centuries Ce, Ilkka Linstedt Feb 2026

The Religious Groups Of Mecca And Medina In The Sixth And Seventh Centuries Ce, Ilkka Linstedt

Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series

Ancient and modern urban centres have been important loci for encounters between individuals of different identities. In this article, I present Mecca and Medina as multi-religious towns in the pre-Islamic and early Islamic periods of the sixth and seventh centuries ce. Mecca was a very small town, but the Kaaba shrine there served as a regional pilgrimage site that drew people from different faith communities. Medina was a larger settlement with a significant Jewish population. Jews, Christians and others (‘pagans’) lived in both towns. Some of these ‘others’ had also adopted some of the basic ideas of monotheism, although they …
