We estimate the causal effect of attending elite schools in England, Scotland, and Wales on human capital and labor market outcomes for cohorts of children from the 1958 National Child Development Study and the 1970 British Cohort Study. For identification, we employ a nonparametric partial-identification approach that provides bounds on the causal effect by assuming that, on average, there is positive selection into elite school attendance, and that attending an elite school does not worsen average potential human capital or labor market outcomes. Objective To explore the effects of immediate parent–infant skin-to-skin contact (iSSC) at very preterm birth on maternal–infant behavioural responses and hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity to age-appropriate socio-emotional stress at 4months corrected age. Design Two secondary outcomes from a multicentre randomised controlled trial with two non-blinded parallel groups. Setting Three Scandinavian neonatal intensive care units, level 2 and level 3. Participants 91 infants born at gestational age 28+0to 32+6 from April 2018 to June 2021. Singletons and twins with a second caregiver present were included, regardless of mode of birth. Background: Left atrial (LA) volume and function are important for assessing pediatric diastolic dysfunction (DD). Three-dimensional echocardiographic (3DE) LA assessment may overcome limitations and assumptions inherent in two-dimensional echocardiographic (2DE).

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of children under 18 years of age with structurally normal hearts, using transthoracic 3DE apical volume datasets. LA volumetric function and phasic deformation analyses were performed using 3DE (GE, EchoPAC 4DLAQ v206, near fully-automated) and 2DE (TomTec, TTA2.51, CPA, manual) was performed by three operators and processing time was collected. Agreement and reproducibility was assessment for each modality.

Recent algorithmic advances have enabled the inference of genome-wide ancestral recombination graphs (ARGs) from large genomic cohorts, providing detailed models of genealogical relatedness along the genome. These inferred ARGs can complement genotype imputation by capturing the effects of unobserved variants, but their use in large-scale linear mixed-model analyses has been computationally prohibitive. Here, we develop methods that leverage the ARG to perform genotype-matrix multiplications in sublinear time and implement scalable randomized algorithms for mixed-model analyses. We introduce ARG-RHE, a randomized Haseman-Elston approach for estimating narrow-sense heritability and performing region-based association testing using ARGs, enabling parallel analysis of multiple quantitative traits. …

Understanding the heterogeneity of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and identifying distinct progression pathways is critical for improving diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. Motivated by this need, this study aimed to identify disease progression subphenotypes among patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD using electronic health records (EHRs). We developed a novel approach that combines a graph neural network (GNN)-based framework with time series clustering to characterize progression subphenotypes from MCI to AD. Intergroup trust refers to a collective prediction and belief among members of one group regarding those of another in intergroup interactions. It plays an important role in avoiding intergroup conflicts, and thereby sustaining social development. This study was designed to investigate the effects of third-party punishment and compensation, as well as group regulatory focus, on intergroup trust. The findings revealed that, at both individual and group levels, prevention-focused groups exhibited higher levels of intergroup trust than promotion-focused groups under third-party compensation conditions. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. While the only curative treatment for PDAC is surgical excision of the tumor, often surgery is ineffective due to early metastasis to other organs. A better understanding of PDAC’s risk factors would contribute to earlier PDAC diagnoses and thus more effective surgical resections before metastasis occurs.

One pathology related to PDAC is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a metabolic disease leading to triglyceride accumulation in the liver. BACKGROUND: Sand flies are small hematophagous insects known as leishmaniasis vectors. Similar to most arthropods, they harbor nonobligate endosymbionts that may influence host adaptation and pathogen transmission, but these symbiont communities remain poorly characterized in Leishmania-endemic African sand flies. METHODS: We screened 1700 wild-caught phlebotomine sand flies (1266 females, 434 males) from Kenya's Baringo, Nakuru, and Kajiado counties, and 253 colony Phlebotomus duboscqi, for Rickettsia, Wolbachia, Spiroplasma, Cardinium, Arsenophonus, Microsporidia, and Leishmania by high-resolution melting analysis and sequencing of PCR products. However, evaluation of the alignment of these objectives against the PCME, a collection of graduation competencies published by the Association for Academic Pathology, has not yet been performed. This study investigated how comprehensively the GI/Liver block of the JeffMD curriculum addresses the corresponding PCME learning objectives, thereby piloting a pathology curriculum map and allowing evaluation of this curriculum.

This article argues that the unpredictability and unintuitive behavior of modern artificial intelligence provide more opportunities for users of autonomous weapon systems (AWS) to remain ignorant of risks posed by their systems to protected entities on the battlefield, and that this ignorance can be maintained even in iterative situations featuring a prior civilian casualty event. Introduction: Menstrual disorders—including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and dysmenorrhea—are highly prevalent among women of reproductive age and are associated with impaired academic performance, psychological distress, and reduced social functioning. The inwardly rectifying potassium channel Kir7.1 is essential for the physiological function of diverse tissues, including the retinal pigment epithelium and the gestational myometrium. Loss-of-function mutations in KCNJ13, which encodes Kir7.1, or conditional ablation of Kir7.1 in the retinal pigment epithelium, lead to early-onset vision loss. Despite strong genetic evidence supporting Kir7.1 as a therapeutic target, its regulation by endogenous ligands-beyond phosphoinositides-remains poorly understood. Here, we report cryo-electron microscopy structures of human Kir7.1 in multiple functional states at resolutions ranging from 2.8 Å to 4.0 Å.
