Supervising The Omnipresent Casino: Evaluating The Role Of State And Local Regulation In Stemming Youth Addiction To Sports Gambling, Matthew Connor Flink

Duke Law Journal

Since 2018, state legalization of sports betting and the industry’s corresponding proliferation has driven an epidemic of youth addiction. Current state legislation and regulations do little to combat youth addiction. Many legal scholars emphasize the value that a federal regulatory regime would provide to reign in youth sports betting. This Note explores the value that state and local government can have in the sports gambling space. To illustrate the unique importance of state and local legislation and regulation of sports betting, this Note analogizes to another addictive product with a history of youth addiction: nicotine.

Thus far, the Circuit Courts have come to different conclusions which require the input of the United States Supreme Court. Shimmer: Introducing And Workshopping A New Methodology For Practice-Led Research, Lola Montgomery

This presentation examines a new methodological approach by introducing shimmer as an embodied epistemological state that frequently appears within creative-practice research but is rarely named, scaffolded, or assessed. Emerging at the intersection of feminist philosophy, phenomenology, affect theory, reflective practice, and practice-led research, shimmer describes the moment when insight coheres somatically before it can be articulated conceptually. Rather than positioning intuition as unrigorous or accidental, shimmer reframes embodied emergence as a legitimate site of knowledge production. Introduction: Residential lead remediation is an effective primary prevention approach for addressing lead exposure. Current guidelines require residents of a home get relocated during the remediation. Relocation is often for a period of ten days; however, no study has explored the effect of relocation on families. This study aims to understand the experiences of relocated families with a goal to develop a framework for relocation informed by the experiences of previously relocated families.

We present a collection of 17 high-quality long-read inbred mouse strain genomes with complete annotation (contig N50s of 0.8-33.9 Mbp). This collection includes 12 widely used classical laboratory strains and 5 wild-derived strains. We have resolved previously incomplete genomic regions, including the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), defensin cluster, T cell receptor, and Ly49 complexes. Hundreds of non-reference genes from previous publications not found in GRCm39, such as Defa1, Raet1a, and Klra20 (Ly49T), were localized in the new reference genomes. We conducted a genome-wide scan of variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) within the coding regions, identifying over 400 genes with VNTR …

Mycobacteria Infection Induced Cascade Of Epigenetic Alterations Promote Training In Bystander Macrophages, Shah E. Jahan Gulzar Mr

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) remodels host cell functions to support its intracellular persistence. While the effects of Mtb infection on infected macrophages are well characterized, responses of uninfected bystander cells in the same microenvironment remain poorly understood. Here, we show that Mtb infection triggers widespread epigenetic reprogramming not only in infected macrophages but also in neighbouring bystander cells. These bystander macrophages acquire active chromatin marks, exhibit distinct transcriptional changes, and display enhanced immune responsiveness, thereby increasing resistance to both homologous and heterologous infections. We identify interleukin-1 beta secreted by infected cells as a key mediator of this process. Functionally, trained bystander …

This paper presents the first application of the Modified Extended Direct Algebraic (MEDA) method to the (2+1)-dimensional Wazwaz-Kaur-Boussinesq equation, a model governing wave dynamics in shallow waters. The approach successfully uncovers previously unreported classes of exact solutions, including combo dark–singular solitons and Jacobi elliptic function solutions. The spectrum of obtained solutions–which also encompasses bright, dark, and singular solitons, as well as hyperbolic, periodic, exponential, and rational functions–reveals rich and complex soliton dynamics. A comprehensive stability analysis confirms the robustness of these solutions under perturbation. These results significantly advance the understanding of wave propagation in nonlinear systems, providing valuable insights for …

While it is important for many consumer goods, authentication is crucial for artworks and artifacts where the value difference between the authentic and the inauthentic is huge. The question is raised most frequently in conflicts between buyer and seller of art where it is claimed that a warranty was breached, or between the owner of artwork and an authenticator where the claim sounds in tort. Background:

Handgrip strength, gait speed, Five-Times-Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST) performance, skeletal muscle mass and calf circumference are important health outcomes, particularly useful for diagnosing sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to establish reference (normative) values for handgrip strength, gait speed, FTSST performance, skeletal muscle mass and calf circumference by pooling individual participant data from national cohorts in Asia.

Methods:

We conducted a pooled analysis of individual participant data from 20 national cohorts representing 12 Asian countries (China, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore and Sri Lanka). We included cohorts with data on at least …

Cost efficient, spatially resolved water quality monitoring is essential for managing pollution and protecting aquatic ecosystems. This study presents a low-cost (approximately USD 200), open-source, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-deployable in situ sensor node for real-time assessment of surface-water conditions. The system integrates sensors for pH, turbidity, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDSs), with onboard data logging and real-time clock (RTC) synchronization. Bench validation of the sensor package yielded mean absolute percentage errors of 1.34% for pH, 5.23% for TDS, and 0.81% for temperature, and the device operated continuously for 42 h. The widespread adoption of electric vehicles and distributed power sources poses new challenges to power systems, as increased volatility and uncertainty in both load demand and power supply place greater pressure on distribution network operation. To address these challenges, an electric vehicle charging control strategy considering photovoltaic power accommodation is proposed. First, the Monte Carlo method is employed to simulate and analyze the electricity consumption characteristics and charging behaviors of electric vehicle users. To address the limitations of current photo voltaic power forecasting methods, which rely heavily on meteorological monitoring and classification techniques and are unable to achieve accurate all-weather forecasting under large-scale complex data, a Multiformer-TSA method based on a two-stage attention (TSA) mechanism is proposed for photovoltaic power forecasting. First, a cross-scale embedding layer is constructed to generate staged sampling tokens and collect photovoltaic sequences at different scales, thus extracting cross-scale features. Then, point-based segments of different dimensions in multivariate time series are embedded to form new feature vectors, capturing cross-dimensional dependencies. In a strong electromagnetic induction environment, the outage line in the double-circuit line on the same tower will produce induced voltage and induced current. Election integrity is paramount to democratic health. The Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) is a multistate collaboration that facilitates essential election administration functions, whereby members share administrative data to ensure clean voter registration lists and to encourage individuals who are eligible but unregistered (EBUs) to register to vote. Despite ERIC’s primary focus on maintaining the accuracy of voter rolls, in 2022, some conservatives accused it of being a tool for partisan electioneering, prompting nine Republican-led states to leave ERIC. Researchers and nursing advocates have been advocating for safe staffing for many years; unions and health employers have implemented many different approaches with little success. The nursing shortage was already reaching a critical level when the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically highlighted and worsened the impacts of understaffing, leaving nurses consistently working short in an overstretched system. Shift after shift, nurses find themselves risking their licenses and their own mental and physical health as they do their best to meet their patients’ care needs.
