Euclidean Ramsey theory concerns Ramsey-type problems over Euclidean spaces. In this talk, I will discuss a general framework on how to design algorithms to construct colorings avoiding short monochromatic arithmetic progressions in Euclidean Ramsey theory using some simple geometry and number theory. Joint work with Gabriel Currier and Kenneth Moore.

Using satellite-derived abundance indices over 20 years, we investigated population change among the seven Ross Sea emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) colonies. We found a 90% probability that the Ross Sea metapopulation had lower springtime attendance between 2005 and 2024 (mean change = -23%; 95% CI: -46 to +20%). We identified two distinct phases of change: slightly increasing 2005 to 2019/2020, followed by a steep decline 2020-2024, resulting in a decrease of approximately 23 000 birds in 5 years or approximately 32% of the regional population. Background: Pulse oximetry is widely used to estimate arterial oxygen saturation, yet accuracy may vary for a number of reasons. Data on children with functionally univentricular circulation are limited. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the agreement between arterial oxygen saturation measured by blood gas and pulse oximetry in children with functionally univentricular circulations. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of paired arterial blood gas and pulse oximetry oxygen saturation measurements following Norwood, Glenn, or Fontan procedures. Interpersonal violence on college campuses disrupts academic experiences and impacts outcomes for students. This study sought to understand the experiences of students in the United States engaging with Title IX offices, within the context of additional state mandates. Interviews were conducted with 24 students and analyzed through inductive content analysis. Students described negative impacts such as challenges with the organizational processes, impacts to institutional trust, frustration with ineffective protections, and high personal and academic costs. Positive outcomes expressed included feeling more empowered to engage in self-advocacy and finding validation of their experience. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols emphasize minimizing the administration and consumption of opioids through multimodal analgesia and regional anesthesia. The transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block provides reliable analgesia for lower abdominal procedures such as open hernia repairs. Dexmedetomidine, a selective alpha 2 adrenergic agonist, has been shown to enhance local anesthetic duration and quality while reducing postoperative opioid requirements. This case involved a 45-year-old female undergoing open inguinal hernia repair at a rural surgical mission site in Guatemala. Reducing Respiratory Complications During Endoscopy Procedures Using Dexmedetomidine, Jon Austin Moore, Amy Snow

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) are common procedures most often utilizing monitored anesthesia care (MAC), primarily using propofol as the sedative. Propofol is regularly used due to its rapid onset and recovery profile, however, its narrow therapeutic window and dose dependent responses can cause adverse respiratory events. In patients with respiratory pathophysiology, obesity, or obstructive sleep apnea, these adverse events can be catastrophic. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), a selective a2-adrenergic receptor agonist with anxiolytic, sedative, and modest analgesic properties, produces sedation with minimal respiratory depression. For anesthesia providers caring for perioperative patients, does the use of standardized safety protocols including ergonomic training reduce the incidence of back injuries and “boom strikes” compared to anesthesia counterparts that do not undergo ergonomic training or follow safety protocols?

Presentation Outcomes:

1. Describe the common injuries that occur perioperatively to the anesthesia provider, as well as ways to mitigate these risks including available assistive lifting devices.
2. Discuss the benefits of formal ergonomics training in the reduction of musculoskeletal injuries and head injuries to the anesthetist.

Perioperative Vasopressors In Free-Flap Maxillofacial Procedures, Merry K. Otte, Lauren Barnes

Traditionally, vasopressors are avoided in microvascular surgery. This tradition is largely based on animal studies, which demonstrated that ephedrine and phenylephrine may lead to decreased graft perfusion and pedicle thrombosis. Modern clinical evidence is largely unable to replicate these results, as no consistent correlation is observed between flap compromise and vasopressor use. Although some isolated studies show potential flap compromise with vasopressor exposure, the vast majority of modern clinical evidence suggests that vasopressor exposure poses no increased risk to flap compromise.

Limiting Post-Operative Nausea And Vomiting In High-Risk Patients, Turner Tinsley

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains a major challenge in anesthesia for high-risk surgical patients. Its complications extend beyond discomfort as increased dehydration, fluid shifts, aspiration risk, and hospital stay duration all reduce patient satisfaction. Research and clinical experience highlight the need for anesthesia providers to move away from single-drug prophylaxis and implement individualized, multimodal strategies for high-risk patients.

Early risk identification is vital. The Apfel score—based on female gender, non-smoking status, history of PONV, and likely opioid use—effectively forecasts risk. An Apfel score of 4 indicates over 80% chance of PONV, so timely prevention is crucial. More than tallying …

The prevalence of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) continues to rise in the United States. Between 2012 and 2015, elective TKA and THA increased by nearly 50%, and there is a substantial increase in these procedures projected over the next decade. This increase reflects both an aging population and a higher number of younger patients electing for TKA or THA earlier in life. Advances in perioperative care and anesthesia have contributed to improved surgical outcomes, reduced complications, and shorter recovery times for this population. There is a gap at the heart of the law governing the use of nuclear weapons. Repeated threats by Russian leaders to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine highlight the urgency of closing this gap. This article reviews the central holding of the 1996 International Court of Justice advisory opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons. The article focuses on the controversial “extreme circumstances” clause, in which the ICJ stated that it could not determine the legality of using nuclear weapons when the survival of a State was in question. Cryptic Diversity Within Nyctixalus (Anura: Rhacophoridae): A New Species, A Resurrection, And A Redescription, Jennifer Dever, Jimmy A. Mcguire, Djoko T. Iskandar, Amir Hamidy, Lee L. Grismer

The examination of molecular markers confirms hidden diversity and reveals a new species within the Nyctixalus pictus (Peters, 1871) complex. Three genetically distinct clades were recovered: one from the Thai-Malay Peninsula; one from Sumatra, Indonesia; and one from Sarawak, Borneo, East Malaysia. Voucher specimens from each region were compared, and significantly different mean values were found through morphological analyses. The populations also differ significantly in morphospace, as determined by PCA, DAPC, and MFA analyses. The Thai-Malay Peninsula individuals have a distinct, rounded and slightly elongated snout shape compared to the other two clades. Based on these combined data, these three …

Research on therapeutic boarding schools (TBS) has largely focused on treatment experiences and immediate adolescent outcomes, with limited attention to identity development after program discharge. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine identity development during emerging adulthood in TBS alumni aged 18-24 and to explore how internal strengths and external supports influenced participants’ developmental experiences after leaving TBS. Positive youth development was the guiding theoretical framework, emphasizing the bidirectional relationship between a person and the external ecological assets they access. The overrepresentation of federally sentenced Indigenous women in Canada reflects longstanding structural and systemic injustices within the criminal justice system. Constituting approximately 5% of the female population, Indigenous female offenders are disproportionately represented, especially in maximum security facilities and structured intervention units. This qualitative study examined psychologists’ and psychiatrists’ perspectives on the potential role of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) related neurocognitive impairments in increasing justice system involvement among Indigenous women in Western Canada. The goal of this project is to create a wind band transcription of the orchestral work “Let It Ring!” and chamber work “A Red, Red, Rose” by Brian Raphael Nabors. Nabors' music has been described as music that elicits joy and draws deeply from his roots in Birmingham, Alabama, and the rich cultural tapestry of Black musical traditions such as gospel, R&B/neo-soul, funk, and marching band culture.
