What Would It Take To Compose The Ideal Library Dashboard As A 'Symphony' Of Library Data?, Evan Rusch, Heidi J. Southworth, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

Library Services Publications

Most areas of the library produce data informative about the scope and success of library services. Many areas use that data, but there might be a variety of approaches. In our library, we have developed online, interactive dashboards to understand the value of collections on our campus. Other library service areas might produce one-shot reports encapsulating their data, or they rely on analytics silos specific to their services. Our hope is to work toward a dashboard of all or most library services, possibly to include other learning services under the library roof. Instead of a ‘battle of the bands,’ we …

System-Level Drivers For The Adoption Of Evidence-Based Practices In Schools, Marijne Medhurst, Jen Jackson, Pru Mitchell, Romany Manuell Mar 2026

System-Level Drivers For The Adoption Of Evidence-Based Practices In Schools, Marijne Medhurst, Jen Jackson, Pru Mitchell, Romany Manuell

School and system improvement

This report outlines strategies that education system leaders can use to support the adoption of evidence-based teaching practices within schools, recognising the importance of teaching quality to lift student outcomes. It is based on an adapted systematic review of available evidence conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) for and in collaboration with the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO). The report begins by identifying considerations or approaches that system leaders can apply to selecting strategies to support schools, to ensure that they are culturally reflexive, aware of contextual enablers and barriers, and aligned with the approaches evident in …

Tricking Students Into Talking To You: “House Calls” Edition, Ashley Mcguire Mar 2026

Tricking Students Into Talking To You: “House Calls” Edition, Ashley Mcguire

Libraries Professional Work

As a STEM librarian, the struggle to get to know students (and faculty) is real. Beyond the usual "We have a librarian?" phenomenon experienced by most subject liaison librarians, there is an extra layer of stigma carried by many in the STEM fields – scientists should be able to figure things out all by themselves, so asking for help or advice is admitting that you can't handle it! Of course, we know the truth – librarians are here to help with many tasks that scientists are never formally taught, including selecting databases and developing good search strategies. Before being able …

Redesigning Outpatient Chemotherapy Scheduling: A Management Approach To Site-Integrated Operations, Dominick J. Morrone Mar 2026

Redesigning Outpatient Chemotherapy Scheduling: A Management Approach To Site-Integrated Operations, Dominick J. Morrone

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Outpatient infusion centers face persistent scheduling complexity driven by variable treatment durations, coordination between clinics, pharmacy lead times, and constrained staffing. This doctoral project develops and reviews a comprehensive framework for infusion scheduling transformation that integrates workforce role redesign, site‑level communication pathways, and data‑informed workqueue governance. Using a multi‑phase case at a large cancer center as an anchor, the framework specifies responsibilities across central schedulers, on‑site teams, medical coordinators, and nursing; details communication and escalation design (secure messaging and in‑basket use); and outlines training and proficiency tiers. The project synthesizes evidence from scheduling science and time-driven activity-based costing principles to …

Generalizing Networks To Address Data Imbalance For Facial Action Unit Recognition, Andrew W. Sumsion Mar 2026

Generalizing Networks To Address Data Imbalance For Facial Action Unit Recognition, Andrew W. Sumsion

Theses and Dissertations

Facial action unit (AU) recognition is used in a variety of downstream applications, including sign language translation, dementia detection, pain detection, and other high-impact tasks that require understanding facial motion. Although AU recognition is a well-established field, a number of unresolved issues remain. An initial problem is the need to improve overall performance on the benchmark datasets, as measured by the average F1 score. Also, the performance across all individual AUs, not just the average F1 score, needs to be increased. Recently, the field has shifted its attention towards ensuring that AU recognition models generalize beyond the distributions represented in …

From Flat To Form- Shoulder Cluster Darts, Lauryn White Mar 2026

From Flat To Form- Shoulder Cluster Darts, Lauryn White

SPARK Symposium Presentations

This design explores the transformation of a basic bodice by relocating the waist dart to the shoulder to create a clustered effect of three smaller darts. The method used to achieve this is the slashing technique, which allows for controlled redistribution of dart intake. By closing the original waist dart, three evenly distributed darts are opened at the shoulder. This approach enhances both the visual interest and structural design of the garment.

Jefferson Center for Connected Care Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Transitions of care are high-risk periods for patient safety in the emergency department (ED), particularly for patients who are still in the diagnostic process and are discharged with diagnostic uncertainty. Care transitions must be improved for these patients, as one third of discharged ED patients have diagnostic uncertainty. Yet there are no validated measures that assess the quality of care transitions from the ED, limiting the ability to assess the impact of interventions. Thus, we developed and validated the ED Transitions (EDT) measure.

METHODS: This mixed methods study was conducted across a large healthcare system in three phases: item …

Chemiluminescence-Powered Dasa Photoswitching Enables Tumor-Activated Drug Release, Zhou Xianfeng, Lu Yingxi, Mu Xueluer, Gao Jiaojiao Mar 2026

Chemiluminescence-Powered Dasa Photoswitching Enables Tumor-Activated Drug Release, Zhou Xianfeng, Lu Yingxi, Mu Xueluer, Gao Jiaojiao

University Research

Light-dependent drug delivery systems (LDDSs) are fundamentally constrained by limited tissue penetration of external irradiation. Here we report a chemically powered nanoplatform (CPC-nano) that eliminates the need for external light by coupling chemiluminescence (CL) with photoswitchable donor–acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). A DASA-PEG amphiphile was engineered to undergo hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic isomerization upon optical excitation. By coencapsulating a peroxalate CL substrate (CPPO) and an aggregation-enhanced fluorescent emitter (BLSA), endogenous H2O2 is converted into sustained green CL via a chemically initiated electron-exchange luminescence (CIEEL) process. Favorable energetic matching and strong spectral overlap enable efficient CL-driven excitation of DASA, triggering micellar disassembly and rapid doxorubicin …

Our labs are crafted to be engaging and relevant for non-major …

A Spiritual Passage From Santiago To Sligo: Celtic Pilgrimage From St. John’S Eve To Queen Maeve’S Procession, Nichole Lariscy Ph.D. Mar 2026

A Spiritual Passage From Santiago To Sligo: Celtic Pilgrimage From St. John’S Eve To Queen Maeve’S Procession, Nichole Lariscy Ph.D.

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper explores the spiritual dimensions of Celtic pilgrimage through a comparative analysis of two journeys: the Celtic Camino, primarily known as the English Way to Santiago, in Galicia, Spain, and the pilgrimage to Queen Maeve’s Cairn in Sligo, Ireland. It examines how invented traditions and mythological narratives contribute to a sense of ancestral connection and spiritual homecoming. The study employs autoethnographic narrative and theoretical frameworks including Simon Coleman’s concept of laterality and Jenny Butler’s observations on neo-pagan re-sacralisation of the landscape. Field observations, personal reflections, and literature review inform the analysis. The paper identifies ritual, festival, and storytelling as …

Faculty Research 2026

Treatment decisions in IDH-mutant oligodendrogliomas are shaped by tumor aggressiveness, underscoring the need for objective grading of these malignant brain tumors. We collect 302 primary and recurrent resections from oligodendrogliomas and perform Ki-67 staining, proteomics, and DNA methylation profiling. During tumor progression, DNA methylation of oligodendrogliomas changes along a continuum. This continuum is linked to increased epigenetic aging, methylation of transcription factors and Ki-67+ cell density, and large-scale DNA demethylation. Demethylation correlates with CpG flanking sequences preferred by TET enzymes. We confirm these findings in previously profiled astrocytomas, indicating IDH-mutant gliomas progress along a shared epigenetic axis. We develop an …

Faculty Research 2026

Heart weight (HW) is a critical parameter in cardiology and mouse research, commonly normalized to body weight (BW) or tibia length (TL) to account for size differences. Ratio-based normalization, however, assumes strict proportionality between variables, an assumption that is rarely tested and may bias group comparisons. We analysed HW, BW, and TL measurements from over 25,000 C57BL/6N wildtype mice generated by the International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium. Sex- and age-stratified analyses were combined with simulation-based modelling to evaluate empirical scaling relationships and the statistical behaviour of ratio-based normalization. Across all age and sex groups, correlations between HW, BW, and TL were …

New Viability Assays For Acanthamoeba Castellanii Trophozoites And Cysts Allow Rapid Assessment Of Drug Activity., Carrie A Flynn, Rebecca I Colón-Ríos, Andrew Harmez, William F Flynn, Barbara I Kazmierczak

Faculty Research 2026

Pathogenic free-living amoebae such as Acanthamoeba castellanii are present in soil and water worldwide. A. castellanii causes systemic infections with very high mortality rates, yet drugs specifically targeting this pathogen are not available. Methods to reliably generate and assay cysts, which drive infection recurrence and drug resistance, are unavailable in a high-throughput format suitable for drug screening and testing. In this study, we developed a robust and reproducible protocol for encysting A. castellanii as well as a high-throughput, quantitative cyst viability assay using fluorescent live/dead staining coupled with microscopy and automated image analysis. These methods, coupled with optimized techniques for …

Bicuspid Valve Closure And Backflow Prevention: Role Of Leaflet Geometry, Badr Kauoi, A Bou Orm, P Navet, James W. Baish, Lance Munn

Faculty Journal Articles

Bicuspid valves with crescent-shaped leaflets are found in lymphatic vessels and veins, where their primary function is to prevent reflux and ensure unidirectional flow toward the heart. These valves are passive, and their functionality emerges spontaneously from a complex interplay between the properties of the valve leaflets and the flow patterns developing within the vessel sinus region surrounding the valve. The main function of the valves is to limit retrograde flow, or reflux, but the optimal valve structure has not been well characterized. Here we investigate numerically how the length of the leaflets affects the valve efficiency in preventing reflux. …
