Blue Zones: Unlocking Key Themes In The Centenarian's Life, Grace Beer, Grace O. Beer
Honors College Theses
Longevity has been sought after in certain areas of the world, and there are specific regions where this has been achieved. There is an American average life expectancy of 72 years old, but individuals in “Blue Zones” here in America and other areas of the world are expected to and have proven to live well beyond 100. The areas of Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Ikaria, and Loma Linda are classified as Blue Zones, and there could be more of an understanding of how these people live the way they do to have such healthy physical outcomes. To deeply understand the strategy …

A Few-Shot Learning Model Based On A Triplet Network For The Prediction Of Energy Coincident Peak Days, Jinxiang Liu, Laura Brown
A Few-Shot Learning Model Based On A Triplet Network For The Prediction Of Energy Coincident Peak Days, Jinxiang Liu, Laura Brown
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In an electricity system, a coincident peak (CP) is defined as the highest daily power demand in a year, which plays an important role in keeping the balance between power supply and its demand. Advanced information about the time of coincident peaks would be helpful for both utility companies and their customers. This work addresses the prediction of the five coincident peak days (5CP) in a year. We present a few-shot learning model to classify a day as a 5CP day or a non-5CP day 24-hours ahead. A triplet network is implemented for the 2-way-5-shot classifications on six different historical …

China, Europe, And The Pandemic Recession: Beijing’S Investments And Transatlantic Security, John R. Deni, Chris Alden, Erik Brattberg, Roger Cliff, Mark Duckenfield, R. Evan Ellis, Nicholas Nelson, Lauren Speranza
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Given the depth and breadth of the pandemic-induced recession in Europe, private companies in need of capital and governments looking to shed state-owned enterprises may be tempted to sell shares, assets, or outright ownership to investors with liquidity to spare. Of greatest concern is the role that China might play in Europe, building Beijing’s soft power, weakening allied geopolitical solidarity, and potentially reprising the role it played in the 2010s, when its investments in Europe expanded dramatically. More specifically, there is concern over China’s investments in infrastructure and sensitive technologies relevant to American and allied military operations and capabilities.

Protein Frameworks With Thiacalixarene And Zinc, Ronan J. Flood, Kiefer O. Ramberg, Darius B. Mengel, Francesca Guagnini, Peter B. Crowley
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Controlled protein assembly provides a means to generate biomaterials. Synthetic macrocycles such as the water-soluble sulfonato-calix[n]arenes are useful mediators of protein assembly. Sulfonato-thiacalix[4]arene (tsclx4), with its metal-binding capacity, affords the potential for simultaneous macrocycle- and metal-mediated protein assembly. Here, we describe the tsclx4-/Zn-directed assembly of two proteins: cationic α-helical cytochrome c (cyt c) and neutral β-propeller Ralstonia solanacearum lectin (RSL). Two co-crystal forms were obtained with cyt c, each involving multinuclear zinc sites supported by the cone conformation of tsclx4. The tsclx4/Zn cluster acted as an assembly node via both lysine encapsulation …

Privacy Assessment Breakthrough: A Design Science Approach To Creating A Unified Methodology, Lisa Mckee
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
Recent changes have increased the need for and awareness of privacy assessments. Organizations focus primarily on Privacy Impact Assessments (PIA) and Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA) but rarely take a comprehensive approach to assessments or integrate the results into a privacy risk program. There are numerous industry standards and regulations for privacy assessments, but the industry lacks a simple unified methodology with steps to perform privacy assessments. The objectives of this research project are to create a new privacy assessment methodology model using the design science methodology, update industry standards and present training for conducting privacy assessments that can be …

Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields
Optimizing Intrapartum Outcomes For Midwifery Patients With Obesity, Anna Shields
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Existing literature has established that laboring people with obesity have poorer intrapartum outcomes compared to their lower weight counterparts, including elevated c-section rates which increase with increasing BMI. People with obesity are at increased risk for complications related to surgical birth so optimizing chances for vaginal delivery is of utmost importance yet professional guidelines about labor management are lacking. Research has established that people with obesity have longer times in labor especially early labor, need more labor stimulating medications and have physiologic changes that alter the labor process compared to lower weight people. Literature on the impact of midwifery care …

ABSTRACT
In an era of educational reform, schools face the significant challenge of increasing academic achievement. Learning Communities have emerged as a method of school reform with some research suggesting their link to increasing academic achievement and personalizing learning environments. Using individual and focus group interviews, this qualitative case study examines the use of Learning Communities as a reform initiative at a high school in New Mexico to facilitate a stronger sense of belonging among students and to provide individualized guidance, tracking, and support. Findings on the influence of Learning Communities are presented: addition of Advisory/Advisor which provides academic assistance, …

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to explore and understand employee perceptions of remote work as a potential option for normal operations, based on experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic. Two surveys were administered, before and after developing a telecommuting and remote work guideline for the library.
METHODS: An 8-question, web-based survey was sent to all library faculty and staff in the spring of 2021, asking their opinions about working remotely on an ongoing basis. Questions included multiple choice and free-text responses about how often employees wanted to work remotely; what tasks they believed could be done productively from home; …

Galaxy populations show bimodality in a variety of properties: stellar mass, colour, specific star-formation rate, size, and Sérsic index. These parameters are our feature space. We use an existing sample of 7556 galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, represented using five features and the K-means clustering technique, showed that the bimodalities are the manifestation of a more complex population structure, represented by between two and six clusters. Here we use Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), an unsupervised learning technique that can be used to visualize similarity in a higher dimensional space using a 2D representation, to map these 5D …

B-Vitamins Influence The Consumption Of Macronutrients In Honey Bees, Walaa Ahmed Elsayeh, Chelsea N. Cook, Geraldine A. Wright
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Insects require dietary sources of B-vitamins, but relatively little is known about whether they regulate B-vitamin intake in the same way they regulate other nutrients. Honey bees meet their B-vitamin requirements mainly from the pollen they collect. Employing the geometric framework for nutrition, we found that honey bees actively regulate their vitamin intake following Bertrand’s rule. We fed bees with a diet of essential amino acids (EAAs) and carbohydrate (C) to identify how the addition of B-vitamins affected the regulation of these macronutrients. In our experiments, honey bees preferred vitamins in concentrations comparable to those found in honey bee food …
