Black Homelessness In Los Angeles, Dezmin Hemmans, Rosemary Kim May 2022

Black Homelessness In Los Angeles, Dezmin Hemmans, Rosemary Kim

Honors Thesis

Throughout American history, Black people have experienced disproportionate amounts of racism, inequity, and lack of resources. This systemic lack of resources and disparities contribute to an overall lack of individual economic development. These factors were further emphasized following the COVID 19 pandemic, which, increased the separations between others. At the start of the Reconstruction Era, the recently freed enslaved faced homelessness as they left plantations penniless with nowhere to go. They were met with both de facto and de jure segregation codified through restrictive covenants, deed clauses that restricted the sale of property to Black people (Cite). Today, Black people …

Development Of Bioactive Polymers For Anticancer Sirna Therapy, Siyuan Tang May 2022

Development Of Bioactive Polymers For Anticancer Sirna Therapy, Siyuan Tang

Theses & Dissertations

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a deadly disease with limited treatment options due to late diagnosis and resistance to conventional chemotherapy. Moreover, with the decreased survival rate in the past several years, pancreatic cancer may become the second leading cause of cancer-related death by surpassing breast cancer in 2030. CXCR4/CXCL12 pathway is crucial in tumor-supporting microenvironment, tumor progression, angiogenesis, metastasis and chemotherapy resistance. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is one of the interfering RNA (RNAi), which targets mRNA specifically then knockdowns the overexpressed oncogene. Thus, siRNA has been widely used as a therapeutic strategy for various diseases including PDAC. In the research …

Forty Years Of Environmental Justice: Where Is The Justice?, Jon A. Mueller, Taylor Lilley May 2022

Forty Years Of Environmental Justice: Where Is The Justice?, Jon A. Mueller, Taylor Lilley

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Environmental Justice (or“EJ”) has been recognized as a concept since

at least 1982. After decades of incremental and ineffective efforts by the federal

government, it has become clear that EJ must evolve beyond the concept

stage if it is to be an effective vehicle for social and legal change. At its heart,

EJ is a function of social inequities and environmental harms, and the disproportionate

correlation between those components can no longer be ignored

by state and federal actors. The way forward must be paved with practical

legal solutions and affirmative application of regulatory authority. This

article examines the history …

Incorporating Environmental Justice Into Benefit-Cost Analysis Of Federal Rulemakings, John D. Graham May 2022

Incorporating Environmental Justice Into Benefit-Cost Analysis Of Federal Rulemakings, John D. Graham

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

President Biden proposes to revise the federal rulemaking process to advance

the values of justice and equity. This analysis offers a practical path

forward by adding an equity test to the efficiency test applied to new federal

regulations by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. This article explores

the feasibility of the proposal with applications to regulation of hazardous

air pollutants and drinking water contaminants. The proposal seeks

to advance the interests of low-income Americans in federal rulemaking, a

subgroup that has received little historical priority in the regulatory impact

analyses prepared by federal regulatory agencies.

Deconstructing Inequality: Cumulative Impacts, Environmental Justice, And Interstate Redevelopment, Lemir Teron May 2022

Deconstructing Inequality: Cumulative Impacts, Environmental Justice, And Interstate Redevelopment, Lemir Teron

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The siting and development of Interstate 81 in Syracuse, New York, similar

to highway projects across the nation, lead to the displacement of Black

Syracusans

and has exposed thousands of remaining residents at heightened

environmental harm. As the interstate is slated to be redeveloped due to age

and safety issues, national attention has focused on the highway as a potential

exemplar for similar projects across the United States. Federal law mandates

that environmental impact analysis be conducted, and due to the prevalence

of marginalized populations, environmental justice impacts are a

critical feature in this assessment. This article evaluates both the …

Armoring The Just Transition Activist, Abigail Fleming, Catherine Dremluk May 2022

Armoring The Just Transition Activist, Abigail Fleming, Catherine Dremluk

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

The fossil fuel energy system, reinforced by oppressive policies and practices,

has disproportionately harmed poor people, Indigenous people, and

Brown and Black people and driven the global climate crisis. A just transition,

which displaces fossil fuels and redistributes renewable energy resources,

requires policies that are rooted in equity and shift power back to

the hands of the most vulnerable. Just Transition Activists, leaders, organizers,

and changemakers in the just transition movement, must develop transformative

skillsets necessary to radically reimagine our world and dismantle

the current unequal system of law and policy. This analysis explores the

skills, attributes, beliefs, and attitudes …

Examining The Relationship Between Environmental Justice And The Lack Of Diversity In Environmental Organizations, Haley Walter May 2022

Examining The Relationship Between Environmental Justice And The Lack Of Diversity In Environmental Organizations, Haley Walter

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This article highlights the ongoing lack of diversity in each of the

three major types of environmental organizations—conservation and

preservation organizations, governmental agencies, and environmental

grantmaking foundations—and assesses how this lack of diversity

has historically marginalized people of color. Assessing the history of

how the environmental movement has marginalized people of color is

key because from this marginalization grew the rise of the environmental

justice movement and recognition from the legal system of environmental

issues that disproportionately impacted people of color. Last,

this article presents solutions on how environmental organizations can

increase and retain diversity in their staff and leadership …

Expanding American Indian Land Stewardship: An Environmental Solution For A Country In Crisis, Haley Edmonds May 2022

Expanding American Indian Land Stewardship: An Environmental Solution For A Country In Crisis, Haley Edmonds

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Land is the central foundation around which all life is formed. Therefore,

societies must have a stable connection with the land in order to be structurally

sound. If this connection is weak or inflexible, every building-block of

civilization laid on top of it will inevitably crumble. Some societies have established

stable relationships with the land by working around and responding

to nature’s rhythms in order to satisfy their needs. Whereas other societies

have ignored nature’s intricacies and instead have tried to strong-arm

nature into yielding to their whims. These two diametrically

opposed approaches to conceiving of humans’ relationship with the …

Addressing Food Insecurity And Obesity Within A Rural Primary Care Setting, Alec Joseph Tuchowski May 2022

Addressing Food Insecurity And Obesity Within A Rural Primary Care Setting, Alec Joseph Tuchowski

Masters Projects

Background and Objectives: There is a need to screen, assess, and potentially make referrals for social determinants of health (SDOH) to help coordinate healthcare services across the care continuum and identify factors impacting health.

Problem: The majority of primary care offices do not routinely screen patients for social needs, despite the influence they can have on an individual’s health.

Methods: This quality improvement project was implemented using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework at a small, midwestern rural primary care clinic in the United States. Participants included office staff and 31 adult patients who presented to the clinic for …

Thru-Hiker Mentality During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Mental Health, Brooke Fox May 2022

Thru-Hiker Mentality During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Implications For Mental Health, Brooke Fox

Masters Projects

Thru-hiking is where an individual hikes a long distance, end-to-end trail for an extended period of time. While the mental health benefits of hiking and being in nature is well known in current literature, there has been little focus on how the thru-hiker experiences contributes to overall wellness after a person completes their hike. This study investigates how thru-hiker experiences can have a lasting impact on how hikers handle future adversities. This case specifically looks at how thru-hikers have handled the COVID-19 pandemic through in-depth interviews with thru-hikers that have completed the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and through blogs written …

Spiral Of Silence And The Use Of Social Media By Sexual Violence Survivors, Tanvi Thakur May 2022

Spiral Of Silence And The Use Of Social Media By Sexual Violence Survivors, Tanvi Thakur

Theses

Sexual violence has been a global health concern for over decades, but activism on social media such as #MeToo has increased public discourse and awareness about this issue. In its early advent, the #MeToo movement raised ample awareness, stimulated free discourse, and placed this issue as an important concern to address. While countries have implemented austere laws to prevent such hate crimes against women, societal norms and codes have deemed this type of violence as stigma or taboo resulting in the underreporting of the majority of sexual violence-related crimes. The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey conducted in 2015 …

Technologically Improving Textualism, Jeffrey W. Stempel, Erik S. Knutsen May 2022

Technologically Improving Textualism, Jeffrey W. Stempel, Erik S. Knutsen

Nevada Law Journal Forum

The textualist approach to construing statutes, regulations, contracts, and other documents remains dominant but has drawbacks, most significantly its tendency to disregard probative evidence of textual meaning in favor of isolated judicial impressions and dictionary definitions. Although a broader, contextual, “integrative” approach to interpretation is preferable, the hegemony of textualism, even extreme textualism, is unlikely to recede soon. Textualism can be substantially improved, however, through effective use of a form of big data—the corpus linguistics approach to discerning word meaning. By enlarging the universe of sources about how words are actually used, corpus linguistics represents a significant improvement over imperial …

Reception Of Classical Material In The Argument Of Charles Loyseau's Traité Des Ordres Et Simples Dignités, Matt Nelson May 2022

Reception Of Classical Material In The Argument Of Charles Loyseau's Traité Des Ordres Et Simples Dignités, Matt Nelson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Charles Loyseau (1564-1627) was a French jurist who wrote during the reigns of Henry IV and Louis XIII – the first two kings of the Bourbon dynasty. Throughout his career, Loyseau wrote several argumentative treatises either contesting royal edicts or supporting royal law against popular dissent. His most influential work was his 1610 publication Traité des ordres et simples dignites. In it, he helped establish a French social structure of three distinct orders: the Clergy, the Nobility, and the so-called Third Estate consisting of the rest of the population. This system later became known as the Ancien Régime after the …

Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates Of Women In A Primary Care Setting, Kristine E. Davis May 2022

Improving Osteoporosis Screening Rates Of Women In A Primary Care Setting, Kristine E. Davis

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Osteoporosis is caused by caused by low bone mass, microarchitecture disruption and increase in skeletal fragility (Rosen & Drezner, 2021). This disease presents as a silent disease without any clinical manifestations and increases risk for bone fracture. The purpose of this Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project was to increase screening rates for osteoporosis in the female population by mailing a patient reminder letter to the home of qualifying patients in the primary care setting and to determine if mailing a patient reminder letter would increase screening rates. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses and Healthcare professionals (JHEBP) model was used …

Use Of Pocus And Omt For Anterior Shoulder Reduction, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Neeharika Bhatnagar May 2022

Use Of Pocus And Omt For Anterior Shoulder Reduction, David Ho, James Espinosa, Alan Lucerna, Neeharika Bhatnagar

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Shoulder dislocations are very a common presentation in the emergency department. This represents about 50% of all joint dislocations presenting to the ER. Over 95% of the dislocations are anterior. Approximately 70% of shoulder dislocations occur in men and in both genders, the prevalence of shoulder dislocations occurs in a bimodal distribution in age in those younger than 20 and over 60 years old. Shoulder dislocation can occur anteriorly, posteriorly, and inferiorly. In an anterior dislocation, excessive force from external rotation and abduction causes a tear in the anterior ligamentous capsule3, causing the humeral head to dislocate from the glenoid …

Obsessions In Ocd Mimicking Capgras: A Case Report, Ricky Chu, Alexander Swartz, Helen Yi May 2022

Obsessions In Ocd Mimicking Capgras: A Case Report, Ricky Chu, Alexander Swartz, Helen Yi

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mentally debilitating condition that can present in a multitude of ways and its manifestations can vary within the diagnosed patient population. OCD can be diagnosed with the presence of either obsessions or compulsions and does not require both. Sometimes, OCD can affect a patient in a way that mimics delusional misidentification syndromes. In these cases, a patient's ego-dystonia can be a key distinguishing feature in diagnosis. In one specific delusional misidentification syndrome, Capgras, a patient possesses fixed beliefs that a known person (or sometimes object) is an imposter. And even though the textbook OCD …

Modeling The Role Of Cyclin C In Connecting Stress-Induced Mitochondrial Fission To Apoptosis, Steven J. Doyle, Randy Strich May 2022

Modeling The Role Of Cyclin C In Connecting Stress-Induced Mitochondrial Fission To Apoptosis, Steven J. Doyle, Randy Strich

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

For normal cell function, exogenous signals must be correctly interpreted, and the proper response executed. The mitochondria are key regulatory nodes of cellular fate. For example, mitochondria undergo fission and fusion cycles depending on the energetic needs of the cell. Additionally, regulated cell death pathways also function at the mitochondria. Cyclin C is a transcriptional regulator of stress response and growth control genes. Following stress, a portion of cyclin C translocates to the cytoplasm, where it interacts with both the mitochondrial fission and apoptotic machinery. Based on these findings, we hypothesize that Cyclin C represents a key mediator linking transcription …

Secondary Stroke Prevention Retrospective Analysis, Mansi Panse, Samantha Plasner, Nasrine Bendjilali May 2022

Secondary Stroke Prevention Retrospective Analysis, Mansi Panse, Samantha Plasner, Nasrine Bendjilali

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Stroke is the leading cause of serious long-term disability among adults in the United States, and there are well recognized modifiable risk factors for stroke. Secondary prevention efforts to reduce the likelihood of recurrent stroke should be top priority in this high-risk patient population. The role of the primary care team in implementing and assisting patients with adherence to secondary prevention efforts is critical. The objective of this retrospective analysis is to examine how successful primary care providers are at implementing secondary stroke prevention guidelines.

Preventing secondary stroke is critical to the welfare of this high-risk population and ultimately saves …

Riluzole For Pediatric Patients With Treatment-Refractory Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Maheen Mohammad, Stuti Parikh May 2022

Riluzole For Pediatric Patients With Treatment-Refractory Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Maheen Mohammad, Stuti Parikh

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) occurs in about 1-3% of the pediatric population, but many do not respond to standard therapies. Riluzole, a glutamate antagonist, has shown to be an effective treatment for refractory OCD in adults, however few trials have been conducted to show the effectiveness of Riluzole in children to treat refractory OCD. The study investigates the potential use of riluzole in children to treat refractory OCD.

Return To Sport Following Closed Reduction Of Acute Traumatic Posterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocations: A Systematic Review, Seungkyu Park, Joseph Galvin, Matthew Nowak, Jordan Damschen May 2022

Return To Sport Following Closed Reduction Of Acute Traumatic Posterior Sternoclavicular Joint Dislocations: A Systematic Review, Seungkyu Park, Joseph Galvin, Matthew Nowak, Jordan Damschen

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Acute traumatic posterior sternoclavicular (SC) joint dislocation is a serious injury given its potential to cause cardiovascular and airway compromise that typically will require emergent closed reduction. Posterior SC joint dislocations are usually caused by a high energy mechanism. Typical treatment involves closed reduction followed by observation. There is limited data on the rate of return to sport following this injury pattern when treated in a closed fashion.

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro May 2022

Physical Activity As A Means Of Improving Quality Of Life In Individuals With Chronic Pain, Tracy Tauro

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Pharmacologic management of chronic pain has variable results, sometimes resorting to ineffective and dangerous opioids that can potentiate substance abuse in a vulnerable population.

Exercise is unique in its ability to positively impact both the molecular and psychological aspects of chronic pain. Its role in decreasing inflammation as well as improving mental health make it an excellent option for improving quality of life.

Physicians should work with their patients to develop a patient-centered exercise plan to manage chronic pain.

Painless Scrotal Ulcers Become Something Unexpected: A Rare Case Of Scrotal Calciphylaxis, Riddhima Issar, Jinisha Patwa, Yvette Wang May 2022

Painless Scrotal Ulcers Become Something Unexpected: A Rare Case Of Scrotal Calciphylaxis, Riddhima Issar, Jinisha Patwa, Yvette Wang

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Calciphylaxis is a rare vascular disorder that presents with painful skin necrosis due to calcium accumulation in skin and adipose tissue. Most commonly, cutaneous manifestations of calciphylaxis are seen on the buttocks, thighs and extremities. Very few cases have presented unconventional locations of these calcified eschars and ulcers such as the penis and scrotum. Risk factors for this disease include chronic kidney disease, hyperparathyroidism, long-term hemodialysis and diabetes. This case presents an atypical presentation of painless scrotal ulcers.

A high degree of clinical suspicion in patients with ESRD on HD and T2DM is needed to effectively reach a diagnosis of …
