B-Vitamins Influence The Consumption Of Macronutrients In Honey Bees, Walaa Ahmed Elsayeh, Chelsea N. Cook, Geraldine A. Wright

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Insects require dietary sources of B-vitamins, but relatively little is known about whether they regulate B-vitamin intake in the same way they regulate other nutrients. Honey bees meet their B-vitamin requirements mainly from the pollen they collect. Employing the geometric framework for nutrition, we found that honey bees actively regulate their vitamin intake following Bertrand’s rule. We fed bees with a diet of essential amino acids (EAAs) and carbohydrate (C) to identify how the addition of B-vitamins affected the regulation of these macronutrients. In our experiments, honey bees preferred vitamins in concentrations comparable to those found in honey bee food …

Burnout In Pediatric Nephrology Fellows And Faculty: Lessons From The Sustainable Pediatric Nephrology Workforce Project (Superpower)., Susan M. Halbach, Kartik Pillutla, Patricia Seo-Mayer, Alan Schwartz, Darcy K. Weidemann, John D. Mahan

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Physician well-being is an important contributor to both job satisfaction and patient outcomes. Rates of burnout among physicians vary by specialty, ranging from 35 to 70%. Among pediatric residents, longitudinal data demonstrates consistent rates of burnout around 50-60%, although little is known about burnout among pediatric subspecialty fellows. Specifically, the degree of burnout among pediatric nephrologists remains unknown, as does the impact faculty burnout may have on trainee burnout. We sought to evaluate prevalence and predictors of burnout among US pediatric nephrology fellows and faculty, and assess for interactions between groups. In this multi-center pilot survey of all United States …

I, Object, Shanee Gordon May 2022

I, Object, Shanee Gordon

Theses

I, Object is a 3D animated film which dives into the difference between intrinsic value and perceived value, both by an individual and by society, through an anthropomorphized world where household objects must do what they can to survive the onslaught of a depressed, do-it-yourself, divorcee. Following the mockumentary format, these objects are interviewed about the situation they find themselves in. The different personalities and dynamics between the characters brings a comedic element to an otherwise serious encounter. Opening with how the situation has progressed until the moment the filming crew arrived, the film jumps between characters but sticks to …

Grocery Sales And The Pandemic, Joy A. Salentine May 2022

Grocery Sales And The Pandemic, Joy A. Salentine

Honors Capstones

The focus of this paper is to examine the impact of COVID-19 on grocery sales in the United States. My hypothesis is that periods with higher COVID-19 severity, measured through the number of COVID-19 deaths, will show higher grocery sales, all things equal, due to the increased demand during the unusual circumstances of the pandemic. Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S Department of Agriculture, and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, I perform a regression analysis to test my hypothesis. The results confirm my hypothesis by showing that there is a positive and significant effect …

Impact Of Covid-19 Quarantine On U.S. Adults, Shelby Rubino

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

In 2019 a novel virus spread quickly and vastly throughout the world. The coronavirus was transmitted easily, resulting in a sudden increase in infection and death rates and overwhelmed hospitals. This sudden pandemic resulted in government and health officials mandating physical and social quarantines. These mandates were initially implemented to separate the ill from the healthy, and significantly limit physical contact between healthy and ill persons to decrease the spread of Covid-19. All these unexpected factors induced traumatic stress in populations across the world. The impact of this trauma is seen to date, as many studies reported adverse mental health …

Factors Determining Attraction Of Neurodivergent Applicants To Organizations, Barri Levitt May 2022

Factors Determining Attraction Of Neurodivergent Applicants To Organizations, Barri Levitt

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Neurodivergence is used to describe a broad range of neurodevelopmental differences that result in a distinct set of challenges for individuals in interacting with the world around them. Within Diversity, Equity and Inclusion campaigns, neurodiversity is the term used to describe the composition of a space to include neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals. The unique perspectives that come from workplace neurodiversity are a valuable tool, yet companies are routinely missing out on the addition of neurodivergent individuals because of current hiring practices. This study was developed using the theoretical bases of person-organization fit, which emphasizes value congruence between organizations and employees, …

Anhedonia Reduction Correlates With Increased Ventral Caudate Connectivity With Superior Frontal Gyrus In Depression., Xinhua Yang, Jia Huang, Matthew E. Roser, X Guangrong

School of Psychology

This study was to investigate the relationship between the ventral caudate connectivity and anhedonia. Nineteen depressed patients and 16 healthy controls participated in two identical functional magnetic resonance imaging scans during a 1-year period to determine the resting-state functional connectivity changes using a seed-based approach. Patients showed increased left ventral caudate functional connectivity with superior frontal gyrus over time and the increased connectivity was associated with anhedonia improvement. None of these associations were observed in healthy controls. The findings suggest that left ventral caudate may serve as a potential target to improve the severity of anhedonia.

Strong Linguistic Relativity: A Continental Sense Of Language And Being, Ava Totah, Brian Treanor May 2022

Strong Linguistic Relativity: A Continental Sense Of Language And Being, Ava Totah, Brian Treanor

Honors Thesis

The theory of linguistic relativity can be divided into two hypotheses: the strong argument and the weak argument. The strong argument, often called linguistic determinism, posits that one’s native language determines one’s thought in an inescapable manner. The so-called “Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis” demonstrates this, though many modern linguists now believe this principle – and linguistic determinism in general – to be implausible. The weak argument for linguistic relativity states that one’s native language merely influences their worldview, such that it struggles to maintain a connection that is more than trivial. In this work, I seek a “third option” that is both …

Machine learning is often used to build predictive models by extracting patterns from large data sets. Such techniques are increasingly being utilized to predict outcomes in the social sciences. One such application is predicting student success. Machine learning can be applied to predicting student acceptance and success in academia. Using these tools for education-related data analysis, may enable the evaluation of programs, resources and curriculum. Currently, research is needed to examine application, admissions, and retention data in order to address equity in college computer science programs. However, most student-level data sets contain sensitive data that cannot be made public. To …

Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) are abundant carbohydrates fundamental to infant health and development. Although these oligosaccharides were discovered more than half a century ago, their biosynthesis in the mammary gland remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we use a systems biology framework that integrates glycan and RNA expression data to construct an HMO biosynthetic network and predict glycosyltransferases involved. To accomplish this, we construct models describing the most likely pathways for the synthesis of the oligosaccharides accounting for >95% of the HMO content in human milk. Through our models, we propose candidate genes for elongation, branching, fucosylation, and sialylation of HMOs. Our …
