Slurred, Blurred, And A Hard-To-Find Word: Acute Progressive Neurologic Changes In A Pediatric Patient, Lauren Ridgway, Amelia Sneve, Andrew Nguyen, Aleisha Nabower

Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum

Background: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is typically a viral sequelae, with a 1-3% mortality rate. ADEM has been described as a consequence of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. This case report describes a child diagnosed with ADEM in the setting of acute SARS-CoV-2 infection with the clinical course complicated by co-infection with Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). HHV-6 positivity in the CSF is often considered an incidental finding, but it has been shown to cause encephalopathy, seizures, and demyelinating disease. This case is unique in that the dual infection with SARS-CoV-2 and HHV-6 may have contributed to the development of ADEM, poor clinical …

Background: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension, and preeclampsia, are a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Dysregulation of inflammation is thought to play a role in the development of HDP. Maternal diet has the potential to alter the risk of HDP by modulating inflammation. Arachidonic acid (AA) is a dietary polyunsaturated fatty acid which can be metabolized into both pro- and anti-inflammatory bioactive metabolites.

Significance of Problem: HDP places women and their infants at risk for potentially severe pregnancy complications including placental abruption, embolism, end-organ failure, or death. Few treatments …

Background. β-carotene is one of the few carotenoids that can be endogenously converted to vitamin A, a nutrient essential for inner ear development. While previous studies have identified a protective effect of carotenoids on hearing in adults, the impact of β-carotene on hearing outcomes in neonates is not well understood. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between maternal β-carotene intake, maternal plasma, and umbilical cord plasma β-carotene levels and abnormal Newborn Hearing Screen (NHS) results.

Significance of Problem. The prenatal period is critical for auditory development; thus, effectors of auditory development may significantly impact long-term hearing …

Child Health Research Institute Pediatric Research Forum

Background:

Maternal opioid misuse is a rising public health concern. Our lab previously published findings that in-utero oxycodone exposure (IUO) has detrimental impacts that persist to the F2 generation, including abnormal genetic expression, increased anxiety, and a difference in phenotypic measurements. The estimated cost of hospital admissions for infants suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome was $316 million in 2012 and is still rising. This figure does not take into account long-term costs, nor does it consider lasting effects on the F2 generation. Thus, it is critical to find a way to mitigate the negative impacts of IUO.

Suvorexant (suvo) is …

The Dream Of The Common Good: Not A Nightmare, Jackson Gregory Dellinger

Honors Theses

This paper examines an emerging position in the philosophy of law, common-good constitutionalism. In the first two parts of the paper, I explain the position and constitutionalism more generally, examining how common-good constitutionalism fits within the definition of constitutionalism providing by a neutral scholar. In the next five parts, I attempt to show that common-good constitutionalism’s preference for explicit adherence to the common good does not violate constitutionalism. In doing so, I provide an examination of common-good constitutionalism’s relationship with three important constitutional principles and the separability of common-good constitutionalism as a whole and the infamous views of its most …

Firsthand Experience In A Community Pharmacy Through The Lens Of A Pharmacy Technician, Khamariah Patrice Yelder-Anderson May 2022

Firsthand Experience In A Community Pharmacy Through The Lens Of A Pharmacy Technician, Khamariah Patrice Yelder-Anderson

Honors Theses

In the first chapter, I discussed three of the major issues in a community pharmacy which are rude customers, phones, and shorter hours. Technicians have to deal with very opinionated customers who can come off as insolent. The phones are a popular mode of communication for both the patients and physicians but that doesn’t account for the added demands it places on pharmacy workers. Lastly, the pharmacy has experienced later openings with earlier closings that have left filled queues and unhappy customers. The next chapter, interpersonal dynamic, takes a deeper look into how various roles of the pharmacy engage with …

Developing "A Personal Knowing" - A Grounded Theory Study, Mark Davies May 2022

Developing "A Personal Knowing" - A Grounded Theory Study, Mark Davies

Dissertations

The past 30 years have seen rapid expansion in nursing roles, and the provision of education that supports them. However, the nature of the knowledge that characterises advanced practice, and the pedagogical strategies that are utilised in catalysing its development have yet to be extensively evaluated. Whilst a number of frameworks which purport to conceptualise this knowledge do exist, such structures remain somewhat provisional. Likewise, the pedagogical approaches employed in the development of knowledge for advanced practice are derived as much from teacher preference, organisational expedience, and external policy drivers as educational efficacy. The study presented within this thesis addresses …

Stirring Up The Soil: Best Practices To Mitigate Lead Exposure In Contaminated Soils Within Omaha, Nebraska, Mckenzie Blaine

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Cities across the nation in the United States experience problems associated with lead contamination in their urban soils due to industrial pollution. In many instances, the emission of lead particles occurred – unregulated – for several decades. Though there are federal cleanup efforts to help minimize the negative impacts of lead contamination for the public in the United States, the efforts are designated for specified criteria and thus do not reach all areas which need to be remediated. In order to perform proper lead abatement practices, local organizations must take initiative on projects which meet the needs and demands of …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We observed that the immune checkpoint protein B7-H3 is overexpressed in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients with poor treatment outcomes. Inhibition of B7-H3 expression or blocking of its activity using a novel monoclonal antibody (T-1A5) in AML cells significantly enhanced natural killer (NK) cell-mediated cytotoxicity in AML cells in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, a human-mouse chimera of this antibody (ChT-1A5) induced antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) in B7-H3+ primary AML cells, but not in normal hematopoietic cells, suggesting the specify of this antibody for AML cells. Epitope mapping studies identified that both T-1A5 and ChT-1A5 antibodies bind to the FG-loop …

The Effects Of Climate Change On The Transmission Of Lyme Disease, Schuyler Hedican, Katherine Kistler, Iveth Martinez Granados May 2022

The Effects Of Climate Change On The Transmission Of Lyme Disease, Schuyler Hedican, Katherine Kistler, Iveth Martinez Granados

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Lyme disease currently affects approximately 300,000 people annually in the United States, but climate change threatens to increase this number. Rising temperatures, humidity, and levels of rainfall are impacting the relationship and interactions between the bacterium that causes Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), its vectors, and associated hosts. Climate change models predict a northward expansion of these disease-carrying vectors and hosts into new territories in North America, as formerly unsuitable territories become more hospitable, most notably in Canada. Human exposure to the bacteria through the bite of an infected tick can lead to the characteristic symptoms of Lyme disease, such as …

Insights From The Field: Project Execution Success And Failure, Tracey M. Richardson, James W. Marion Jr, Vittal S. Anantatmula, James R. Gibson

Publications

Project execution plays a decisive role in project success, but past research did not focus on the project manager’s perspective of what needs to be accomplished to achieve success. In this study, the authors used qualitative techniques to look for reoccurring themes related to 44project managers’ responses to interview questions associated with successful project execution and failed project execution. The study found that despite the project management profession growth, professional associations’ efforts, and their professional development endeavors, project management execution seems to be concerned with what has happened versus what is happening in a project. This study provides a conceptual …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Adventitious rooting is an essential biological process in the vegetative propagation of economically important horticultural and forest tree species. It enables utilization of the elite genotypes in breeding programmes and production. Promotion of adventitious root (AR) formation has been associated with starvation of inorganic phosphate and some factors involved in low phosphorus (LP) signalling. However, the regulatory mechanism underlying LP-mediated AR formation remains largely elusive. We established an efficient experimental system that guaranteed AR formation through short-term LP treatment in Populus ussuriensis. We then generated a time-course RNA-seq data set to recognize key regulatory genes and regulatory cascades positively regulating …

Religious Sexual Minorities, Belongingness, And Suicide Risk: Does It Matter Where Belongingness Comes From?, Samuel J. Skidmore, G. Tyler Lefevor, Rachel M. Golightly, Eric R. Larsen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Sexual minorities (SMs) experience a unique set of stressors as a result of their minority status that can lead to adverse mental health outcomes, including increased suicidal ideation (SI). A sense of belongingness—particularly in sexual minority communities—has been shown to buffer these outcomes. It is less clear, however, how belongingness in communities that hold heteronormative values may relate to SI. The present study fills this gap through an analysis of data from 602 SM members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (CJCLDS; “Mormon” church). We examine how minority stressors and religiousness are related to SI for SMs …
