Factors Leading To Reduced Unscheduled Pediatric Asthma Visits During Covid-19, Sean Stout May 2022

Factors Leading To Reduced Unscheduled Pediatric Asthma Visits During Covid-19, Sean Stout

Research Days

Background: Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient (IP) asthma visits were reduced during 2020 at a tertiary pediatric hospital. This was likely due to measures used to avoid exposure to the SARS-CoV2 virus which led to fewer viral upper respiratory infections (URIs). Other known asthma triggers include allergens, air pollution, and weather changes.

Objectives/Goal: To determine whether other factors could explain this reduction, we looked for changes in other asthma triggers such as pollen, air pollution, and weather.

Methods/Design: Monthly ED and IP asthma visits from 2010 to 2019 were compared to 2020 by time series analysis (TSA), controlling for total …

Social Democracy All The Way Down: The Swedish Model Of Government, Shanan Riley '23 May 2022

Social Democracy All The Way Down: The Swedish Model Of Government, Shanan Riley '23

Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy

The welfare state in Sweden was established more than a century ago by the Social Democratic Party of Sweden, which held power for close to eight decades. The welfare state can loosely be defined through strong social programs meant to uplift the livelihoods of the Swedish people funded through a heavy tax burden. The early democratic socialists established the welfare state with the goal of creating a “folkhem”, or people’s home, in Sweden, where all people could be supported throughout their lives by government welfare programs. (1) Who the “people” of Sweden are has changed over the last century, but …

The Steady-State: It’S Time To Rustle Some Jimmies, Sofia Zasiebida '23

Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy

The steady-state is a political and economic theory that recognizes many of the detrimental problems caused by capitalism, while not accepting socialism as the solution. The steady-state paves its own way as a political theory with the main goal of consuming resources sustainably to save the planet and improve the lives of the public. The stationary state, as he named it, was first written about by John Stuart Mill in the early nineteenth century and was
expanded upon to include action policies by Herman Daly in the late twentieth century. In a steady state, resource use stays constant so that …

Conflicting Visions Of Socialism: Tito-Stalin Split, Franklin Rangel '23 May 2022

Conflicting Visions Of Socialism: Tito-Stalin Split, Franklin Rangel '23

Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy

The USSR being the first and most dominant socialist force in the world immediately led to all other leftist movements being cast under its shadow, especially during the Cold War. One of these client states was Yugoslavia, located in a premium strategic point and led by a popular socialist veteran, Josip Broz Tito. Stalin and Tito’s ideological differences and Yugoslavia’s unique position in terms of foreign policy led to a public split between the two countries. Tito’s critique of classical liberalism, and the disagreements that he had with Stalinism, led the USSR and Yugoslavia down different paths both ideologically and …

The Gulf Coast Fish Cheer: Radicalism And The Underground Press In Pensacola, Florida, 1970-1971, Christopher Satterwhite May 2022

The Gulf Coast Fish Cheer: Radicalism And The Underground Press In Pensacola, Florida, 1970-1971, Christopher Satterwhite

Florida Historical Quarterly

By the end of the 1960s the underground press in the United States had grown exponentially from five publications in 1965 to hundreds by the end of the decade with a "combined readership that stretched into the millions."1 As the underground press movement flourished throughout the counterculture, this new radical media spread from college campuses to military towns across the country. By 1971, Pensacola, Florida, had joined a growing number of American cities with an underground newspaper. That paper was the Gulf Coast Fish Cheer.

To Conquer The Coast: Pensacola, The Gulf Of Mexico, And The Construction Of American Imperialism, 1820-1848, Maria Angela Diaz May 2022

To Conquer The Coast: Pensacola, The Gulf Of Mexico, And The Construction Of American Imperialism, 1820-1848, Maria Angela Diaz

Florida Historical Quarterly

Americans' dreams of empire appeared to become reality when the United States gained control over Florida in 1821. Yet although the U.S. controlled a significant portion of the Gulf Coast, the nation remained one among many foreign powers vying for dominance in the region, a fact that raised concerns about future expansion in the minds of many. As of 1821 the U.S. shared the coastline with a newly independent Mexico. At the same time, France, Britain, and Spain remained active in both the Gulf and the Caribbean.1 The combination of new republics and old colonial powers shaped the nature of …

Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer May 2022

Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer

Florida Historical Quarterly

In 1979 Nat Tillman, a Lincoln High School (LHS) alumnus and one of the Gainesville Sun's first African-American columnists, penned an article advocating for the preservation of Lincoln's history as a "pioneer of black education in Florida." Tillman interviewed Eric Roberts, a member of Lincoln's first graduating class of 1925 about why Lincoln's history as a historically black high school "deserved to be preserved." Like many of Florida's black high schools closed during school integration efforts of the late 1960s and early 70s, Lincoln's roots stretch back to Reconstruction. However, as Florida's second accredited black high school, Roberts praised the …

Anaerobic Contributions Are Influenced By Active Muscle Mass And The Applied Methodology In Well-Controlled Muscle Group, Gabriel Luches-Pereira, Carlos A. Kalva-Filho, Marcelo Papoti May 2022

Anaerobic Contributions Are Influenced By Active Muscle Mass And The Applied Methodology In Well-Controlled Muscle Group, Gabriel Luches-Pereira, Carlos A. Kalva-Filho, Marcelo Papoti

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(7): 599-615, 2022. The anaerobic metabolism determination is complex and the applied methodologies present limitations. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different calculations (MAOD vs. AOD) on the anaerobic contribution using the dynamic knee extension. Twenty-four male were recruited [Mean (SD); age 27 (1) years, body mass 90 (3) kg, height 181 (2) cm]. This study was divided into two independent experiments (EXP1: one-legged; EXP2: two-legged). In both experiments, it was performed a graded exercise test to determine maximal power (MP-GXT); 2-4 submaximal efforts (VO …

Predictors Of Academic Performance In High School Students: The Longitudinal Asap Study, Marie-Maude Dubuc, Mylene Aubertin-Leheudre, Antony D. Karelis

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 616-631, 2022. Academic performance is influenced by multitude factors. However, little is known about their relative importance and how they evolve over time. The purpose of the present study was to determine the relative importance of cognitive control, physical, psychological and sociological factors as well as lifestyle habits in predicting academic performance in high school students using cross sectional and longitudinal approaches. One hundred and eighty-five grade seventh to ninth students (mean age: 13.1 ± 1.0 years old) from a single high school completed a 3-year prospective study. Academic performance, cognitive control, physical, psychological …

Stimulus Expectancy And Stimulus Response Of Caffeine On 4-Km Running Performance: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled And Crossover Study, Giovanna Rohloff, Diego Souza, Carlos Ruiz-Moreno, Juan Del Coso, Marcos Polito May 2022

Stimulus Expectancy And Stimulus Response Of Caffeine On 4-Km Running Performance: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled And Crossover Study, Giovanna Rohloff, Diego Souza, Carlos Ruiz-Moreno, Juan Del Coso, Marcos Polito

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 645-654, 2022. The placebo effect of caffeine has been poorly investigated in endurance exercise. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the placebo effect of caffeine on 4 km running performance in amateur runners. Twenty-two healthy and recreational male runners (25.5 ± 8.4 yrs; 75.0 ± 7.1 kg; 173.7 ± 6.3 cm) underwent a deceptive experimental design consisting of three different sessions: a) control (CON) in which participants did not ingest any substance; b) placebo (PLA) in which participants ingested a capsule filled with maltodextrin but they were informed that they would …

Relationship Between Ground Reaction Force Characteristics And Bone Mineral Density Of The Hip And Spine In Male Runners, Michele Leblanc, Allison Burdullis, Marcus Mckinnon, Steven A. Hawkins May 2022

Relationship Between Ground Reaction Force Characteristics And Bone Mineral Density Of The Hip And Spine In Male Runners, Michele Leblanc, Allison Burdullis, Marcus Mckinnon, Steven A. Hawkins

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 655-666, 2022. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between running ground reaction force (GRF) characteristics and hip and lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) values in male runners. Individuals who ran at least 48.3 km per week and were injury-free were recruited. Kistler force plates collected running vertical and anteroposterior GRF data. A Hologic Discovery W bone densitometer measured lumbar spine and five regional hip BMD values. Only runners who consistently used a rear foot strike pattern were included (n = 32). Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between BMD …

The Agreement Between A Portable Contact-Mat And Force-Plates During Bilateral Vertical Jumps, Stuart N. Guppy, Yosuke Kotani, Jason P. Lake, Christopher Latella, Jodie Cochrane Wilkie, Kristina L. Kendall, G. Gregory Haff

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 632-644, 2022. Force plates are commonly used when assessing vertical jumping performance but are not always affordable or practical tools for all testing situations. Twenty-four participants volunteered to take part in a study investigating the agreement between bilateral force plates and a new commercially available contact mat that records jump height, flight-time (FT), and FT of individual limbs during both countermovement (CMJ) and squat (SJ) jumps. Each participant performed six jumps of each type while standing on a contact mat placed upon a pair of in-ground force plates. When compared to the force plate …
