Student Motivation And Engagement In The Middle School Math Classroom: How Can Teachers Respond?, Sarah Janae Mcglothlin

Masters of Education in Teaching and Learning

This study investigated the factors that contribute to and take away from middle school students’ active and meaningful participation in math class. The study also sought to gather students’ opinions and ideas for how their teachers could better engage and motivate them in the middle school math classroom setting. Using surveys, student interviews, and a teacher focus group, the researcher gathered and coded data via the constant comparative method and identified the major themes of intrinsic motivators, extrinsic motivators, distractions, and impacts of COVID-19 as key factors. The study also generated the concepts of teacher assistance, lesson style and activities, …

Optimization Of A Styrene Prodcution And Separation Process, Bryce Little May 2022

Optimization Of A Styrene Prodcution And Separation Process, Bryce Little

Honors Theses

A step wise optimization of Unit 500 was completed. Unit 500 is a planned ethylbenzene to styrene production plant that has a annual production goal of 100,000 metric tons of styrene. The cost of styrene on the market is $1,598. The base case of Unit 500 produced styrene at a cost of $2,650. Optimization was completed with an emphasis on parametric changes though material of construction and heat integration were also considered. The optimized Unit 500 design reduced the cost of styrene production to $2,035 per metric ton. While this represents a significant improvement on the base case cost, it …

Impact Of Food Insecurity On Coping Strategies: A Comparison Of Family And College Perception, Nora Evelyn Halama

Honors Theses

Food insecurity (FI), defined as the lack of consistent access to nutrient dense foods, is equally complex as it is prominent in low-income households. Many food insecure individuals have developed coping strategies to mitigate food deficiencies. There remains a gap in research regarding the influence food insecurity on these coping strategies during the transitionary period of students from home life to college. The present study examines the impact of food insecurity on coping strategies among students during both high school and college experiences. A total of 231 freshmen at two large, urban universities completed a questionnaire that included the 6-item …

A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Attention Bias For Facial Expressions Of Emotion, Joshua W. Maxwell May 2022

A Meta-Analysis And Investigation Of Attention Bias For Facial Expressions Of Emotion, Joshua W. Maxwell

Psychology ETDs

The progression of affective science in the last few decades has brought with it a sub-field concerned with whether task-irrelevant facial expressions of emotion guide selective attention against our will. Such attentional bias is intuitively plausible, yet numerous recent studies were unable to observe it, motivating a meta-analysis (Chapter 2). Although the overall effect of 2.4 ms from 152 cases (g = .0823) was significantly greater than zero, its small size indicates a barely detectable phenomenon with no practical significance. A plausible explanation for this lack of attentional bias for emotional faces was tested in Chapter 3; even infrequently …

Correlations Of Subsurface Geotechnical And Geophysical Parameters In Central Montana, David Barrick May 2022

Correlations Of Subsurface Geotechnical And Geophysical Parameters In Central Montana, David Barrick

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This paper summarizes the results of a suite of tests performed in conjunction with a site investigation for the replacement of six timber bridges in Central Montana and four investigative geotechnical boreholes from a nearby ranch. The sites at the six timber bridges consist of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks (shale with stratified sandstone), overlain by thin layers of residual clays or Quaternary alluvium. The geology at the nearby ranch consists of either Quaternary vuggy travertine or Quaternary alluvium/colluvium deposits overlying residual shale of the Mississippian Heath Formation. In total, 49 samples were collected ranging from three Quaternary travertine HQ core samples, …

The Power Of Reading In The Comic Feminine Middlebrow Novel, Amy Rambo May 2022

The Power Of Reading In The Comic Feminine Middlebrow Novel, Amy Rambo

English Theses

Often overlooked in critical discussions of British Literature produced in the early twentieth century, comic feminine middlebrow novels offer unique insights into the lives of middle-class women in the 1930s. The novels within this genre feature strong female characters negotiating issues of class and gender. However, comic feminine middlebrow novels also contain subtle conversations regarding the nature of reading and the importance of middlebrow texts in the lives of middle-class women. This thesis examines four such middlebrow novels: Miss Buncle’s Book by D. E. Stevenson, Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons, Christmas Pudding by Nancy Mitford, and Diary of a …

Neurology Articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vascular dementia (VaD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease affecting cognition and memory. There is a lack of approved pharmacological treatments specifically for VaD. In this study, we investigate the therapeutic effects of AV-001, a Tie2 receptor agonist, in middle-aged rats subjected to a multiple microinfarct (MMI) model of VaD.

METHODS: Male, 10-12 month-old, Wistar rats were employed. The following experimental groups were used: Sham, MMI, MMI+1 μg/Kg AV-001, MMI+3 μg/Kg AV-001, MMI+6 μg/Kg AV-001. AV-001 treatment was initiated at 1 day after MMI and administered once daily via intraperitoneal injection. An investigator blinded to the experimental groups …

Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert May 2022

Investigating Active Learning Through The Lens Of Student Engagement, Nicole Naibert

Dissertations and Theses

Incorporating active learning into a course has been generally found to lead to improved student learning outcomes; however, not all students benefit from these environments to the same extent. Although active learning environments provide the opportunity for students to interact and engage with the material, whether a student decides to do so is completely up to them. Therefore, the goal of this dissertation was to begin exploring active learning environments through the lens of student engagement and relevant associated variables (i.e., self-efficacy and student perceptions). This was completed through three separate but related projects.

Project I focused on investigating flipped …

Lawyers That (Say They) Listen: An Exploratory Study Into Law Firms With Listening Specific Branding, Kacey Henriques May 2022

Lawyers That (Say They) Listen: An Exploratory Study Into Law Firms With Listening Specific Branding, Kacey Henriques

Honors Theses

The following investigation attempts to explore the communication dynamics between law firms and their clients. As shown in this research, clients tend to make note of poor communication skills, specifically listening skills, when they interact with attorneys. In an attempt to appeal to clients who have had negative interactions in respect to listening, several law firms across the country are utilizing branding that stresses their strengths in listening (what I term listening specific branding). In the investigation to come, three law firms are analyzed that utilize this type of branding. Additionally, three law firms that specialize in similar areas of …

Drafting An Assessment Plan For Your Instruction Program: Sustainably Assessing Information Literacy In An Undergraduate Stem Course, Kevin Moore, Clinton K. Baugess

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Assessing student learning across a library instruction program can be infeasible without being strategic, intentional, and realistic. Librarians at a small college will share how they developed a sustainable, 3-year assessment plan for the ACRL Framework and targeted a 100-level biology course-one of the two high-enrollment STEM courses that receive library instruction on their campus each year. The presenters will share their assessment plan, flipped instruction model, workflow-management strategies, and lessons learned for collaborating with STEM faculty to assess information literacy.
