Machine Learning Derivation Of Four Computable 24-H Pediatric Sepsis Phenotypes To Facilitate Enrollment In Early Personalized Anti-Inflammatory Clinical Trials, Yidi Qin, John C Lin, Allan Doctor, Et Al. May 2022

Machine Learning Derivation Of Four Computable 24-H Pediatric Sepsis Phenotypes To Facilitate Enrollment In Early Personalized Anti-Inflammatory Clinical Trials, Yidi Qin, John C Lin, Allan Doctor, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Thrombotic microangiopathy-induced thrombocytopenia-associated multiple organ failure and hyperinflammatory macrophage activation syndrome are important causes of late pediatric sepsis mortality that are often missed or have delayed diagnosis. The National Institutes of General Medical Science sepsis research working group recommendations call for application of new research approaches in extant clinical data sets to improve efficiency of early trials of new sepsis therapies. Our objective is to apply machine learning approaches to derive computable 24-h sepsis phenotypes to facilitate personalized enrollment in early anti-inflammatory trials targeting these conditions.

METHODS: We applied consensus, k-means clustering analysis to our extant PHENOtyping sepsis-induced Multiple …

Electron Traps In Ag-Doped Li2B4O7 Crystals: The Role Of Ag Interstitial Ions, Timothy D. Gustafson, Brant E. Kananen, Nancy C. Giles, Brian C. Holloway, Volodymyr T. Adamiv, Ihor M. Teslyuk, Yaroslav V. Burak, Larry E. Halliburton

Faculty Publications

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used to establish models for electron traps in Ag-doped lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7) crystals. When exposed at room temperature to ionizing radiation, electrons are trapped at interstitial Ag+ ions and holes are trapped at Ag+ ions on Li+ sites. The trapped electrons occupy a 5s1 orbital on the interstitial Ag ions (some of the unpaired spin density is also on neighboring ions). Three EPR spectra are assigned to electrons trapped at interstitial Ag ions. Their g values are near 1.99 and they have resolved hyperfine structure …

The Interplay Between Human Habitation Impacts Barrier Island Development, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson May 2022

The Interplay Between Human Habitation Impacts Barrier Island Development, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

A school of thought exists that habitation on tree islands in the Everglades intensified development of those islands. Barrier islands too change in response to human influences, a modern-day analogy is infrastructure built on barrier islands to reduce erosion. So too may pre-Columbian Native American settlements around Florida have influenced the development of barrier islands around the state. This presentation will display preliminary data to show how sediment data from excavations can be used to elucidate the relationship between barrier island structures and human habitation and invite collaborators to join a project to better understand this relationship.

Present Status And Advances In Bladder Pain Syndrome: Central Sensitisation And The Urinary Microbiome, I Offiah, R Campbell, A Dua, L Bombieri, R Freeman May 2022

Present Status And Advances In Bladder Pain Syndrome: Central Sensitisation And The Urinary Microbiome, I Offiah, R Campbell, A Dua, L Bombieri, R Freeman

Peninsula Medical School

Key content Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) presents as a spectrum of urological symptoms with poorly understood pathophysiology. Bladder mucosal injury secondary to low grade sub-clinical infection is a possible trigger, leading to nociceptive upregulation and, subsequently, central sensitisation. Brain abnormalities associated with BPS suggest that neuropathological brain alterations exist, which may contribute to the perceived pain. Central sensitisation plays a role in the disease pathophysiology via an augmentation in the responsiveness of the central pain signalling neurons. The urinary microbiome is implicated as a trigger for the development and maintenance of BPS. Future directions to improve treatment strategies include stratification …

Evidence Of Areca Nut Consumption In The United States Mainland: A Cross‑Sectional Study, Irene Tami‑Maury, Suzanne Nethan, Jessy Feng, Hongyu Miao, George Delclos, Ravi Mehrotra

School of Medicine Publications

Background

Areca nut (AN) is an addictive substance consumed in the Southeast region and is highly associated with oral premalignant lesions and oral cancer. The impact of AN use in the United States (US) is largely unknown, but the products are readily available and probably used by a significant fraction of Asian immigrants or descendants living in the US. We aimed at assessing AN use prevalence among the Asian community in Houston, Texas.

Methods

A cross-sectional questionnaire was used to interview adult individuals (≥ 18 years of age) who self-identified as Asian immigrants or descendants residing in Houston. Means, frequencies, …

Iphigenia brasiliana is a species of shell found mainly in Brazil, the Carribean, and Florida. The common name is Tarioba, and it is found in the north and northwest regions of Brazil. In the United States, this shell is known as the Giant false donax. This research analyzes shell samples of the Iphigenia brasiliana collected from South Inlet Park in Boca Raton, Florida. The goal was to characterize size and weight of the samples and create a histogram. This data is compared to data from Brazilian literature and journals to provide species descriptions for archaeologists who might encounter this species …

Comparison Of Measurement Accuracy Between Caliper And Iphone Apps, Taryn Lagor, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson May 2022

Comparison Of Measurement Accuracy Between Caliper And Iphone Apps, Taryn Lagor, Alanna L. Lecher, April Watson

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

Measurements of bone artifacts can give insight into the influence of ecological resources on the survival and health of area inhabitants. Calipers are traditionally used for accurate measurements for shell and bone artifacts. Measurement apps may present an accurate alternative to calipers. In this experiment shell and bone artifacts were measured with calipers, the Ruler iPhone App, and the ARuler iPhone app. The results of this experiment show no statistical difference in the measurements taken using a caliper vs measurements taken on an iPhone apps. Though they were not statistically significant, there were differences in measurements between the various methods.

Energy And Resource-Saving Method For Enriching The Waste Water Purified Without Sufficient Purification With Oxygen, Dilobar Khurramova, Mukhtor Khurramov, Sharifa Ganieva, Zulqaynar Nazirov May 2022

Energy And Resource-Saving Method For Enriching The Waste Water Purified Without Sufficient Purification With Oxygen, Dilobar Khurramova, Mukhtor Khurramov, Sharifa Ganieva, Zulqaynar Nazirov

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

In order to implement a reliable and environmentally safe, economically viable method of wastewater enrichment, the goal is to develop an energy- and resource-saving method of oxygen enrichment of wastewater that has not undergone sufficient treatment. Cleaning is carried out in a tank, which is built using rock, which is an algal limestone. Limestone contributes to the improvement of the oxygen regime due to the “conservation” of organic matter in anoxic bottom layers and the acceleration of the process of photosynthesis of unicellular algae. Calcium carbonate is a reagent that provides not only automatic stabilization of water pH at 2/dm …
