A Multimodal Approach To Decreasing Hesitancy And Increasing Uptake Of The Covid-19 Vaccine In The Family Care Setting, Meghan Zwierzynski May 2022

A Multimodal Approach To Decreasing Hesitancy And Increasing Uptake Of The Covid-19 Vaccine In The Family Care Setting, Meghan Zwierzynski

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Since December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has swept across the world, infecting and killing millions of people, making it one of the worst pandemics in history (WHO, 2021). However, the rates of confirmed cases and deaths have slowed since the discovery of the COVID-19 vaccine. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to decrease vaccine hesitancy and increase uptake of the COVID-19 vaccine in the family care setting. The Iowa Model-Revised (Iowa Model Collaborative, 2017) is a practical, effective multi-step change process that acted as a guide for the EBP project. A review of literature showed …

The Future Is Not What It Used To Be: Longevity And The Curmudgeonly Attitude To Change, Kathy Behrendt May 2022

The Future Is Not What It Used To Be: Longevity And The Curmudgeonly Attitude To Change, Kathy Behrendt

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Boredom has dominated discussions about longevity thanks to Bernard Williams’s influential “The Makropulos Case.” I reveal the presence in that paper of a neglected, additional problem for the long-lived person, namely alienation in the face of unwanted change. Williams gestures towards this problem but does not pursue it. I flesh it out on his behalf, connecting it to what I call the ‘curmudgeonly attitude to change.’ This attitude manifests itself in the tendency, amongst those getting on in years, to observe that things are getting worse. Curmudgeonliness is typically met with dismissal because it often concerns changes that don’t radically …

Nonlinear Hydrostatic Control Of A Wave Energy Converter, David Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Ryan G. Coe, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ossama Abdelkhalik May 2022

Nonlinear Hydrostatic Control Of A Wave Energy Converter, David Wilson, Giorgio Bacelli, Ryan G. Coe, Rush D. Robinett Iii, Ossama Abdelkhalik

Michigan Tech Patents

Increased energy harvesting is realized using a nonlinear buoy geometry for reactive power generation. By exploiting the nonlinear dynamic coupling between the buoy geometry and the potential wideband frequency spectrum of incoming waves in the controller/buoy design, increased power can be captured in comparison to conventional wave energy converter designs. In particular, the reactive power and energy storage system requirements are inherently embedded in the nonlinear buoy geometry, therefore requiring only simple rate-feedback control.

Covid‑Specific Coercive Control Among Emerging Adults Attending College: A Brief Note, Heather Littleton, Katie Edwards, Kayla E. Sall, Stephanie Lim, Victoria Mauer May 2022

Covid‑Specific Coercive Control Among Emerging Adults Attending College: A Brief Note, Heather Littleton, Katie Edwards, Kayla E. Sall, Stephanie Lim, Victoria Mauer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a “perfect storm” with regards to risk for intimate partner violence (IPV). Abusive partners may engage in novel forms of coercive control, such as pressuring their partner to engage in activities associated with COVID-19 infection risk (e.g., attend a large gathering). However, no empirical research has focused on COVIDspecific coercive control. The current study sought to evaluate the prevalence of COVID-specific coercive control in a large sample of U.S. college students, as well as its association with other forms of IPV and depression and anxiety. A total of 2,289 undergraduate students attending eight U.S. universities who …

Intervention Goals For Preschoolers With Language Difficulties And Disorders A Scoping Review Using The Icf Framework, Elaine Kwok, Carly A. Cermak, Kathryn Hatherly, Barbara Jane Cunningham

PRECISe Preschool Speech and Language Publications

Purpose: The primary aim of this scoping review was to categorize language therapy goals reported in intervention studies for preschoolers (i.e., children from 0 to 5;0 years old) with language difficulties and disorders within the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. A secondary aim was to determine whether different therapy goals were reported for different language difficulty/disorder subtypes (i.e., comparing language difficulty/disorder associated with a biomedical condition to those without an associated biomedical condition).

Method: The scoping review followed Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) guidelines. Articles were retrieved from speechBITE, with age (under …

Emotion Regulation And Coping Motives: An Ema Study Of The Path Between Negative Affect And Craving, Joseph H. Lancaster May 2022

Emotion Regulation And Coping Motives: An Ema Study Of The Path Between Negative Affect And Craving, Joseph H. Lancaster

ETD Archive

Negative affect (NA) is a known precipitant of cravings, and each are robust predictors of lapses, making this pathway an excellent target for lapse prevention in opioid treatment. As emotion dysregulation arises from unmitigated NA, deficits in emotion regulation (ER) contribute to cravings in part by worsening distress, although the form these deficits take remains unclear. Coping motives are relevant in the context of NA and show robust associations with ER difficulties. Further, coping motives have demonstrated a similar role in exacerbating the effect NA has on cravings. This study aimed to explore the conditional indirect effects of ER deficits …

How To Identify Employees That Need Reskilling, Richard D. Busby, Welearn, Chicagoland Learning Leaders, Cna Insurance May 2022

How To Identify Employees That Need Reskilling, Richard D. Busby, Welearn, Chicagoland Learning Leaders, Cna Insurance

Publications & Research

Around 1.4 million workers will need reskilling by 2026. As the pandemic accelerates existing work from home, automation, and digital transformation trends, up to 25% more workers than were previously expected might need to switch occupations to prepare for the future of work. Many of us know the Importance of Reskilling Your Workforce including:

  • Fill skills gaps
  • provide growth opportunities
  • increase engagement
  • foster creativity, productivity, and morale

But before rolling out reskilling programs and initiatives, it’s necessary to know who needs them most and where to start.

Teaching & Learning Guide For Disability And Climate Justice, Molly M. King, Maria A. Gregg, Ana V. Martinez, Emily Y. Pachoud May 2022

Teaching & Learning Guide For Disability And Climate Justice, Molly M. King, Maria A. Gregg, Ana V. Martinez, Emily Y. Pachoud

Sociology

Disability is widespread: nearly one in four Americans has a disability (Taylor, 2018) and disability cuts across demographic categories. Among individuals aged 15 and over, 12.6% had some type of mobility disability; above age 65, it is nearly 40% (Brault, 2012). Mobility disabilities heighten vulnerability to climate change and climate-related disasters (UNHCHR, 2020). Reduced information resources and mobility, increased health risks, and a lack of visibility in climate change discourse put people with disabilities in a more vulnerable position in the climate crisis. However, this vulnerability can be mitigated through relevant and sufficient access to information, risk mitigation …

Computational Investigation Of Calmodulin Photocontrol With The Help Of An Azobenzene Derivative, Jeremy Wells May 2022

Computational Investigation Of Calmodulin Photocontrol With The Help Of An Azobenzene Derivative, Jeremy Wells

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The ability to control the activity and binding capability of enzymes in a reversible manner offers tremendous control over biological processes. Photocontrol, in particular, is promising in that electromagnetic radiation can be fine-tuned in terms of its strength, location, and duration. Photosensitive compounds, such as the azobenzene family, experience an isomerization at certain wavelengths, and attaching these compounds to enzymes has the potential to alter their structure and activity. Calmodulin (CaM) is a Ca2+ -sensitive signaling protein that has the ability to affect several downstream processes in eukaryotes and is an excellent target for photocontrol due to its small size …

Uncomfortable But Necessary: White Faculty Identity Development And Race Conversations, Monique B. Appel May 2022

Uncomfortable But Necessary: White Faculty Identity Development And Race Conversations, Monique B. Appel

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

In recent years, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives have been highlighted in college mission statements, but there is a gap between college-wide initiatives and classroom practices. Research shows that White Americans, in particular, remain silent, express colorblindness, and incorporate avoidance strategies when discussing race (Bryan et al., 2012). As classrooms become increasingly diverse, White faculty must be equipped to serve all students equitably. To address White faculty discomfort with discussing race in their courses, I provided educational resources and used restorative justice circle practice to create a safe, low stakes environment for faculty to explore this topic. Through circle practices, …

Exploring Restorative Justice As An Adaptable Resolution For Gender-Based Misconduct, Jessica D. Naidu May 2022

Exploring Restorative Justice As An Adaptable Resolution For Gender-Based Misconduct, Jessica D. Naidu

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

Restorative justice, an approach to harm rooted in Indigenous culture, asks three central questions: 1) What is the harm? 2) Who is impacted? 3) How can we repair it? This is a vastly different approach to most criminal justice procedures that instead seek to determine who broke what rule and how they should be punished. Although a modern resurgence of restorative justice has exploded across college campuses, higher education has been slow to adopt the approach for relationship violence and sexual harm. In this study, victim advocates, conduct professionals, and university administrators at the University of San Diego participated in …
