Child Of The Dream: A Memoir Of 1963, Taylor Bitton

Children's Book and Media Review

It's January 1963, and Sharon Robinson has just turned thirteen years old. As the daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, she has many more opportunities than most people of her race at that time. She saw her first concert live at the Apollo theater, she lives in a wealthy neighborhood, and her family has many connections to major figures, like Martin Luther King Jr. But Sharon's life is far from perfect. She's not totally removed from racial prejudice at school, and her family is experiencing some turmoil as her brother Jackie Jr. rebels and struggles to find his place in …

Animal Atlas, Amanda Morgan May 2022

Animal Atlas, Amanda Morgan

Children's Book and Media Review

There are animals from every continent and ocean. In North America, monarch butterflies migrate from Canada and the US to Mexico. The bee hummingbird lives in what little remains of the Cuba tropical forest. In Asia, the Baikal seal can be found in Lake Baikal, where two-thirds of the plants and animals are unique to the lake. In Australia, kiwis roam among the kauri trees, and saltwater crocodiles live in the brackish rivers leading to the Indian Ocean. Deep in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, find mysterious animals like Murray’s abyssal anglerfish, and in the seagrass meadows of the Indian Ocean, leafy …

Abc For Gingerbread Boy And Me!, Erica Sonzogni

Children's Book and Media Review

Learning the ABCs is a foundational skill, and while alphabet books are not always the most exciting, this one is more mundane. Each page dedicated to one letter focuses on putting that letter at the beginning of the word, with the exception of x, which is in the final letter in its word so readers can understand the sound that letter makes. The photographs and the examples for each letter are basic. D shows a door, dog, doctor, dime, duck, and dinosaur. Familiar words do allow children to learn, but a unique word or item would add interest. Despite the …

What’S In A Name? Sebus, Paul Y. Hoskisson May 2022

What’S In A Name? Sebus, Paul Y. Hoskisson

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

When I first began studying Book of Mormon proper names more than 30 years ago, the name Sebus appeared to present a Gordian knot. Hebrew words, like other Semitic words in gen- eral, are most often built on a structure of three different consonants. This language feature emphasizes the consonants and their sequence and order. The problem with Sebus is that its first and third consonants, /s/ and /s/, are the same— something that is extremely rare in any Semitic language. That being the case, for a long time I shelved any attempt to etymologize Sebus.

Books To Build Faith, Daniel C. Peterson

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

I am sometimes contacted by people who are expe- riencing doubts about the claims of Mormonism or whose spouse or father or daughter has lost faith. I always ask what the specific issues might be, and I then try to address those or to locate colleagues or printed resources that might help resolve their concerns.

More Crops, Less Drops? Agriculture And Climate Interactions Via Soils, Sonali Shukla Mcdermid May 2022

More Crops, Less Drops? Agriculture And Climate Interactions Via Soils, Sonali Shukla Mcdermid

Sustainability Seminar Series

There is an increasing focus on reducing agricultural GHG emissions, while also facilitating cropping systems’ adaptation to climate change. Much of this combined agriculture mitigation and adaptation work centers on managed soils’ carbon and nutrient processes, and interactions with water. I will present two on-going projects evaluating agricultural soil-water-crop interactions and discuss implications for climate mitigation and/or adaptation. I will first describe new, on-going work using an integrated climate-crop modeling framework to Asia. Preliminary results suggest that while specific combinations of management options, including conservation water and soil management, can provide mitigation and adaptation benefits, several trade-offs may exist between …

The Distinctively Basque Stone Shelters Of California’S White Mountains, Michael R. Wing, Elizabeth H. Wing, Amin M. Al-Jamal May 2022

The Distinctively Basque Stone Shelters Of California’S White Mountains, Michael R. Wing, Elizabeth H. Wing, Amin M. Al-Jamal

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

Basque and French shepherds in California’s White Mountains built dry stone shelters that persist today. Despite French names carved on logs associated with a few of these structures, the typical pattern for these shelters is Basque: they closely resemble the cabañas pastoriles (shepherd’s huts) of Bizkaia. A square floor plan with walls about one meter high enclose a single chamber. The stone work is carefully laid to make one wall face. A narrow doorway, often in a corner, faces downhill in any direction except west and can be flanked by low stone “spurs”. A fireplace is usually built into the …

Places Beyond Memory: The Affective Landscapes Of Bernardo Atxaga's Días De Nevada, Mark Pleiss May 2022

Places Beyond Memory: The Affective Landscapes Of Bernardo Atxaga's Días De Nevada, Mark Pleiss

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This study highlights a heretofore-unexplored narrative device in Bernardo Atxaga’s fiction by highlighting how the author’s representation of spaces surrounding Reno and the Great Basin in Días de Nevada models what Berberich et al. (2016) call affective landscapes. The approach contributes to, and looks beyond, the traditional focus on memory in criticism of Atxaga, and it illustrates the story’s engagement with the emotional experiences of populations in the North American West that are not explored or rarely treated in the author’s other works. Finally, this paper contributes a new conceptual model to studies like Elena Delgado et al. (2016) that …

Luisa Etxenike's Trilogy On Terrorism, Agnieszka Gutthy May 2022

Luisa Etxenike's Trilogy On Terrorism, Agnieszka Gutthy

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This article discusses the themes of the three novels of Luisa Etxenike: El ángulo ciego (Blind Spot, 2009), Absoluta presencia (Absolute Presence, 2018), and Aves del Paraíso (Birds of Paradise, 2019). The novels form a trilogy on ETA terrorism, and each novel is dedicated to a different emotion caused by this violence: fear, guilt, and shame. In her novels Etxenike moves away from the portrayal of terrorists and toward portrayal of the victims. She approaches the theme of ETA violence and of social fragmentation and suffering it has caused emphasizing the culture of blame and fear that this violence instills …

Creative Becomings: The Ongoing Definition And Redefinition Of Basque Identity In Uruguay, Martín Gamboa May 2022

Creative Becomings: The Ongoing Definition And Redefinition Of Basque Identity In Uruguay, Martín Gamboa

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This article describes the presence of cultural traits of Basque tradition in the visual arts and Uruguayan literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Likewise, the research deconstructs the concept of “cultural legacy” applied in studies regarding multiculturalism in Uruguay. This approach implied a type of degradation at a cultural level, in which successive generations (first, second, third, and fourth) gradually lost their “original culture”. However, the cultural traits of the Basque ethnic group that appear in the visual arts and literature were shaped by the descendants of the first and second generations. The research demonstrates that certain cultural …

The Social Life Of Violins: A Creative Exploration Of Entanglements And Actor-Network Theory, Benedetta Lombardo May 2022

The Social Life Of Violins: A Creative Exploration Of Entanglements And Actor-Network Theory, Benedetta Lombardo

Culture, Society, and Praxis

This paper uses fiction to explore anthropological concepts concerning material culture, entanglements, new materialism, agency and actor-network theory. In this article a fictive ethnographer encounters a violin who narrates its life- from its conception in the forest where it was part of an ecosystem, to taking form as a violin in a luthier’s shop and the skill negotiation that it entails as well as the effect on the human body, similar to Ingold’s theory of skilled practice, later following the violin until contemporary days as it gets exchanged as a precious good or sold as a commodity. The piece in …

Foodways In Chile: A Bridge Back To Nature, Kayla Weiss May 2022

Foodways In Chile: A Bridge Back To Nature, Kayla Weiss

Capstone Collection

As the area of food studies continues to develop and evolve it has been recognized that, not only is food a necessity to life, but it is uniquely tied to understanding culture, history, and other aspects of a society. This study arose from recognizing this influence and importance and I took the opportunity to better understand how Birchwood College might be an optimal site for a short-term study abroad program based in food studies. I conducted a needs assessment through landscape research, surveying students, and interviewing food studies faculty and international educators at Birchwood College. The research findings offered insights …

Promise And Problems Of Short-Term Mission Trips Through The Eyes Of Christian Young Adults, Hayley Culver May 2022

Promise And Problems Of Short-Term Mission Trips Through The Eyes Of Christian Young Adults, Hayley Culver

Capstone Collection

Short-term mission trips are a popular form of international travel among Christian youth. Though many who attend these trips see them as a way to gain international experience and help others, there are also those who question the value of such trips and describe them as merely “voluntourism.” This research study investigated the experiences of 11 people who did a mission trip as a young adult, guided by the following research questions: What motivates young people to do short-term mission trips? What lasting impact do these trips have on their participants’ worldviews? The findings reveal that while most trip-goers were …

Quantifying Impacts Of Grazing And Poor Land Management Strategies On Erosion Through A Semi-Automated Change Detection Workflow In Ka’Amola, Molokai, L. Kalai Ellis, Richard A. Gill May 2022

Quantifying Impacts Of Grazing And Poor Land Management Strategies On Erosion Through A Semi-Automated Change Detection Workflow In Ka’Amola, Molokai, L. Kalai Ellis, Richard A. Gill

Utah Space Grant Consortium

A challenge faced by those working in a system plagued by non-native vegetation invasion and disturbance from ungulates is the ability to collect landscape-level information about land cover change and the mass movement of soils associated pulsed rainfall events. Our goal was to conduct high-precision change detection of land cover and surface features during a two-year period that included several mass sediment flux events associated with tropical storms. We present here preliminary results of the development and testing of a rule set based classification algorithm used to classify imagery from 2019 and 2021 of a single watershed in Molokai to …

Biophysical Factors Control Invasive Grass Hot Spots In The Mojave Desert, Tanner C. Smith, Tara B. B. Bishop, Michael C. Duniway, Ryan R. Jensen, Richard A. Gill May 2022

Biophysical Factors Control Invasive Grass Hot Spots In The Mojave Desert, Tanner C. Smith, Tara B. B. Bishop, Michael C. Duniway, Ryan R. Jensen, Richard A. Gill

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Invasive annual grasses are a nuisance in the American Southwest through promotion of the grass-fire cycle. Annual grasses such as Bromus rubens, Bromus tectorum, Schismus barbatus, and Schismus arabicus have invaded the Mojave Desert and increased fire occurrence, thus it is important to identify and characterize the areas where persistent invasion has occurred and subsequently fire risk is increased by understanding the distribution of these invasive grasses. Here we use a remote sensing framework to map persistent and productive populations of invasive annual grass, called hot spots, in the entire Mojave Desert ecoregion over 12 years, identify …

Aerodynamic Effects Of Phase Offset Between Synchronized Propellers In Hover, Nathan Welker, Daniel Maynes May 2022

Aerodynamic Effects Of Phase Offset Between Synchronized Propellers In Hover, Nathan Welker, Daniel Maynes

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Emerging advances in electric-propulsion technology are enabling aircraft to use distributed electric propulsion (DEP) to increase efficiency and maneuverability. The implementation of DEP effectively decreases the spacing between propellers, introducing complex aerodynamic interactions that are not well understood. This study presents the use of stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) to obtain 3D velocity measurements of the flow fields of phase locked and synchronized propellers at close proximity in a side-by-side configuration. These experiments were performed to explore the aerodynamic effect of phase offset between the propellers. It was found that while the propeller interactions cause an induced upwash and a …

Progress Report: Covid-19 Hotspot Detection In University Campus Settings, Garrett Duncan, William F. Christensen, Camilla Handley May 2022

Progress Report: Covid-19 Hotspot Detection In University Campus Settings, Garrett Duncan, William F. Christensen, Camilla Handley

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a lot of disruption in the academic world. Many schools and universities shut down entirely and transitioned to online learning. As BYU made the transition back to in-person learning, the administration needed to know if there was in-class transmission happening on campus in order to regulate restrictions and keep students and faculty safe. Using demographic information about the students, we built an XGBoost model that produces an estimated probability of testing positive for each student. We incorporated engineered variables from the demographic information as well. We evaluated model fit using metrics such as AUC. Using a …

Internal Wave Generation By Multiple Peak Topographies, Natsha Wilson, Julie Crockett May 2022

Internal Wave Generation By Multiple Peak Topographies, Natsha Wilson, Julie Crockett

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Internal waves are generated in the oceans and atmosphere and play an important role in their energy budgets. The semidiurnal oscillation of the tides over topography in the oceans combined with the density stratification can create internal waves that radiate away from their source. The effect of multiple peaks on a single topography has on internal wave generation is explored. Initial results begin to show that multiple ridges create two parallel IW beams with smaller IWs between them compared to the single beam created by a one ridge topography. Kinetic energy is also tightly clustered at lower wavenumbers in Fourier …

Exploration Of An Electrochemical Sensor For Continuous Monitoring Of Estradiol In Application To Fertility Tracking, Julia S. Dominesey, Shad J. Roundy May 2022

Exploration Of An Electrochemical Sensor For Continuous Monitoring Of Estradiol In Application To Fertility Tracking, Julia S. Dominesey, Shad J. Roundy

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Estradiol is one of three estrogens, the primary female sex hormone; it fluctuates diurnally, and monthly, dictating the menstrual cycle. We developed a bench-top electrochemical sensor to detect estradiol with the intention of future realization into an implantable, continuously sampling sensor to be used as an aid for fertility health. The electrochemical sensor is comprised of a three electrode system which utilizes a gold working electrode, platinum counter electrode, and Ag/AgCl reference electrode to perform cyclic voltammetry. A monolayer of estradiol aptamers and mercaptohexanethiol coat the working electrode surface. The monolayer was exposed to 10ng/mL, 100n/mL and 1,000ng/mL of estradiol. …

Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding As An Alternative Jointing Method For Wing Spar Structures, Paul Blackhurst, Yuri Hovanski, Andrew Curtis May 2022

Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding As An Alternative Jointing Method For Wing Spar Structures, Paul Blackhurst, Yuri Hovanski, Andrew Curtis

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) is an emerging solid state joining process for thin sheet aluminum. Many researchers are developing RFSSW process parameters, thus enabling the use of RFSSW in many industries. Some work within this development has been on the application of RFSSW to wing spar stringer and skin joining. This is thanks to the RFSSW process being capable of welding the high-strength aluminum alloys used for wing spar construction. Traditionally wing spar joining has been achieved using rivets. This newer method has the potential to improve the strength, reduce the weight, and lower the cost of wing …

Acoustic Analysis Of The Delta Iv Heavy Launch Vehicle, Griffin Houston, Grant W. Hart, Kent L. Gee

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The Delta IV Heavy is an orbital heavy class launch vehicle that has been in operation since 2004. In this study, the overall sound power level and other acoustic properties of the Delta IV Heavy launch vehicle will be calculated and analyzed. Five data acquisition systems with a wide frequency bandwidth were placed in a far-field arc around a 2021 launch. Using a weighted mean to compare results across stations, a maximum overall sound pressure level (OASPL) of 140 dB and an average maximum polar directivity angle of 69 deg were calculated. An overall sound power level of 198 dB …
