Computational Investigations Into Astrochemical Inorganic Oxides, Ammonia Borane, And Genetic Algorithms, E. Michael Valencia May 2022

Computational Investigations Into Astrochemical Inorganic Oxides, Ammonia Borane, And Genetic Algorithms, E. Michael Valencia

Honors Theses

The formulations of quantum mechanics in the early 1900s were exciting theoretical discoveries, but were not practical to apply until the advent of computers and the subsequent computational methods in 1951. With the introduction of tractable simplifications, procedures such as Hartree-Fock allowed for determination of properties of non-trivial systems. Presently, huge leads of computational power have allowed for extremely precise, quantitative work that can be applied to the human body, synthesis, or even astrochemical processes. This thesis presents works concerning 1) the history of quantum mechanics; 2) a brief primer on computational chemistry and its methods; 3) inorganic oxides in …

The Effects Of Astrocytic Derived Insulin-Like Growth Factor (Igf-1) On Cognition And Astrocytes, Destiny Wilson May 2022

The Effects Of Astrocytic Derived Insulin-Like Growth Factor (Igf-1) On Cognition And Astrocytes, Destiny Wilson

Honors Theses

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is a neuroendocrine signaling hormone that plays a vital role in growth and development, as well as learning and memory. Inhibition of this hormone results in cognitive impairments like those seen with age-related decline. While a majority of research has focused on the role of IGF-1 on neurons, the role of astrocytes still needs to be explored. Our research investigates how astrocytes and cognition are affected as a result of direct regulation of localized IGF-1 production in early development and after puberty. Preliminary studies in our laboratory established a connection between IGF-1 and glial fibrillary …

Computational Electronic Spectroscopy Predictions For Astrochemical Ice Analogues And Data Analysis For Experimental Spectra, Austin Wallace May 2022

Computational Electronic Spectroscopy Predictions For Astrochemical Ice Analogues And Data Analysis For Experimental Spectra, Austin Wallace

Honors Theses

Theoretical chemistry aims to acquire wavefunctions for systems to calculate physical observables to help guide experimentation or provide rationale for particular observations. While quantum chemistry has expanded well beyond Hartree-Fock theory to produce more accurate predictions or faster computational times, this theory has formed the foundation of the field through providing a means to solve the electron-electron repulsion term as simply an average field and to acquire converged molecular orbitals through the self-consistent-field method. When attempting to describe large molecular systems that can populate many microstates, the Boltzmann distribution provides a means for determining the relative abundances of each microstate …

The pottery was recovered in 1999 from Grave 5 in Tumulus 17, an early Iron Age burial mound, at the Heuneburg, a paramount settlement and mortuary complex in southwestern Germany. Prior to this discovery, there had been no evidence of the removal of body elements and their deposition in funerary pottery during the early Iron Age. This thesis presents a cross-cultural literature survey of archaeological, ethnographic, and historical evidence …

Investigating The Role Of Small Rna Pathways In Arabidopsis Shoot Gravitropism, Julia Lott May 2022

Investigating The Role Of Small Rna Pathways In Arabidopsis Shoot Gravitropism, Julia Lott

Honors Theses

The plant stem grows against the gravitational force, a phenomenon called negative gravitropism. In the model dicotyledonous plant Arabidopsis thaliana, gravity is sensed by starch-filled amyloplasts, which trigger the shoot gravitropic response through the action of a growth hormone called auxin. In the darkness, a group of transcription factors named PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTORS (PIFs) promote stem negative gravitropism by inhibiting the starch metabolism in the endodermal amyloplasts. Red light promotes starch metabolism and converts amyloplasts into other types of plastids (e.g., chloroplasts) through the red/far-red light photoreceptors—phytochromes. Consequently, red-light-grown seedlings lose starch granules in amyloplasts and exhibit agravitropic growth. However, the …

Reconstructing The Concept Of Organizational Crisis: Using The Historic Case Of Mississippi Chemical Corporation, Carley Horner

Honors Theses

In today’s volatile business environment, organizations are increasingly facing multiple threats that may engender crises of varying scope and intensity. While organizational leaders are intensifying their efforts to understand the nature of crises, there is no consensus in the academic community over the conceptualization of crises. In past studies, researchers have conceptualized a crisis either as an event or a process. This conceptualization is grounded in the assumption that the leader is an objective observer and actor in reaction to a crisis. By analyzing my transcribed interviews of the crisis leaders at Mississippi Chemical Corporation, I have identified two additional …
