Conceptualizing Student Affairs Graduate Preparation As Activity System(S), Graham F. Hunter May 2022

Conceptualizing Student Affairs Graduate Preparation As Activity System(S), Graham F. Hunter

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

Graduate preparation programs serve as a primary site for training new student affairs practitioners. However, scholars perennially raise concerns about the effectiveness of such graduate training and the readiness of new student affairs practitioners for the field. Whereas existing graduate preparation scholarship relies almost exclusively on a socialization framework, alternative theoretical frameworks oriented toward student learning can offer new insight into training individuals to do student affairs work. Utilizing existing literature on student affairs graduate preparation and cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT), this article offers a conceptual model of student affairs graduate preparation as sociocultural activity systems. This model maps dimensions …

The Role Of Gender On Holistic Grief Effects Experienced By College Students, Christiana Olaleye, Mary Alice Varga

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

This study examined the grief effects college students experience when losing a loved one and whether grief effects vary based on gender. Grief effects were outlined by the Holistic Impact of Bereavement and included emotional, cognitive, physical, behavioral, interpersonal, and spiritual effects. The researchers hypothesized that college students would experience all six grief effects, primarily emotional and cognitive effects. The researchers also hypothesized that female students would experience statistically significantly greater grief effects than male students, specifically emotional and cognitive effects. Results indicated a statistically significant difference in the emotional, physical, cognitive, and behavioral grief effects experienced between female and …

Necessary Myths, Jessica Ramsey May 2022

Necessary Myths, Jessica Ramsey

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture

My thesis essay was inspired by my search for a belief system that could transform despair over what will be lost through climate change into valuing what we still have. In researching the earliest iterations of belief structures, I came across the Maros-Pangkep cave paintings. These paintings are the oldest known works of art, and by my interpretation the first evidence of religious life. They are a series of representational paintings which tell a story, and I was inspired to emulate this methodology in my own exploration of belief.

My essay investigates the relationship between images and religion. Through W.J.T …

The Linguistic Dreamstate: Freud, Lacan, And Intertextuality In Samuel Beckett's The Unnamable, Michael R. Kay May 2022

The Linguistic Dreamstate: Freud, Lacan, And Intertextuality In Samuel Beckett's The Unnamable, Michael R. Kay

English

This thesis focuses on the process of symbolization and signification in Samuel Beckett's novel, The Unnamable. The introduction presents readers with important and relevant critical interpretations of the novel, primarily those that are focused on the self, the use of language, and psychoanalytic theory. Then, the thesis introduces readers to key concepts in semiotic and psychoanalytic criticism, such as that of the signifier, sign, big-O Other, and the Lacanian Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real, by applying these concepts to a reading of The Unnamable. The next section, "The Linguistic Dreamstate," argues that the novel's narrator occupies a state tangential to consciousness, …

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Fish And Mussel Distributions Revealed Through Edna Metabarcoding, William Dokai May 2022

Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Fish And Mussel Distributions Revealed Through Edna Metabarcoding, William Dokai

Fisheries

Unionid mussels (order Unionida) are freshwater bivalves distributed worldwide and are among the world's most endangered taxonomic groups. Unionid mussels utilize various fish species as obligate hosts for their parasitic larval stage, and as a result, native fish species are vital to unionid persistence. One of the primary conservation needs for both unionids and fishes is more complete distributional data. However, these data are labor and resource intensive to collect using traditional survey methods. Here, we utilized an eDNA metabarcoding approach to detect unionid mussels and fishes within a large portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan, USA, with the …

Increases in snack consumption associated with Westernized lifestyles provide an opportunity to introduce nutritious foods into poor diets. We describe two 10-wk-long open label, single group assignment human studies that measured the effects of two snack prototypes containing fiber preparations from two sustainable and scalable sources; the byproducts remaining after isolation of protein from the endosperm of peas and the vesicular pulp remaining after processing oranges for the manufacture of juices. The normal diets of study participants were supplemented with either a pea- or orange fiber-containing snack. We focused our analysis on quantifying the abundances of genes encoding carbohydrate-active enzymes …

Analyzing The News Media Trust At Different Levels And Its Relationship With Civic Engagement, Dina Ahmed Ali May 2022

Analyzing The News Media Trust At Different Levels And Its Relationship With Civic Engagement, Dina Ahmed Ali

Theses and Dissertations

"People want trusted news," Faulconbirdge said. Trust has long been deemed a critical element that influences audiences' relationship with the news media. Particularly after the percentage of online users is rapidly expanding around the world during the COVID-19 outbreak and its continuous existence. The new technologies and social media have the power to polarize, manipulate, and entrench public opinion and response. Where trust has eroded, conspiracy theories flourish, the media's authority has waned, and emotions have taken precedence over facts. With high-choice media ecosystems in today's world, news media trust and its relationship with civic engagement have taken on new …

Sodium Mediates Developmentally Plastic Responses In Plants And Herbivores, Luis Santiago-Rosario May 2022

Sodium Mediates Developmentally Plastic Responses In Plants And Herbivores, Luis Santiago-Rosario

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Sodium plays a crucial role in organismal performance, trophic-level interactions, and eco-evolutionary dynamics. For plants, sodium impacts osmoregulation, growth, and water uptake. For animals, sodium is essential influencing osmoregulatory processes, muscle and neural development, and blood regulation. My dissertation aims to disentangle why sodium mismatch affects resource-consumer interactions and its influence on morphological and behavioral plasticity. First, I identified how sodium impacts plant performance and sodium accumulation strategies. I initially focused my research on understanding how increasing substrate sodium affects plant growth and tissue sodium accumulation strategies in controlled settings using a systematic review approach. I found that saltier plants …

Dyt-Prkra Mutation P222l Enhances Pact's Stimulatory Activity On Type I Interferon Induction, Lauren S. Vaughn, Kenneth Frederick, Samuel B. Burnett, Nutan Sharma, D. Cristopher Bragg, Sarah Camargos, Francisco Cardoso, Rekha C. Patel

Faculty Publications

DYT-PRKRA (dystonia 16 or DYT-PRKRA) is caused by mutations in the PRKRA gene that encodes PACT, the protein activator of interferon (IFN)-induced double-stranded (ds) RNA-activated protein kinase (PKR). PACT participates in several cellular pathways, of which its role as a PKR activator protein during integrated stress response (ISR) is the best characterized. Previously, we have established that the DYT-PRKRA mutations cause enhanced activation of PKR during ISR to sensitize DYT-PRKRA cells to apoptosis. In this study, we evaluate if the most prevalent substitution mutation reported in DYT-PRKRA patients alters PACT’s functional role in induction of type …
