Identifying And Lessening Barriers For Alaska Native Students Pursuing A Postsecondary Education: A Guide For Educators, Dannielle A. Carlson May 2022

Identifying And Lessening Barriers For Alaska Native Students Pursuing A Postsecondary Education: A Guide For Educators, Dannielle A. Carlson

Rural Development

This research project seeks to provide stories from Alaska Native students in regards to their postsecondary education experiences to spread awareness of the unique barriers they endure and to recommend solutions to lessen those barriers. The Indigenous research methodology of storytelling was used to collect data on the experiences of eleven Alaska Native college students. Results show students had similar barriers related to lack of support from their families, lack of guidance in college preparation, being underserved in primary and secondary education, and a general lack of belonging on college campuses. A series of recommendations are included within this document …

Performance Of Gaussian Naïve Bayes For Classification With Dependencies From Archemedian Copula, Hugh E. Winston May 2022

Performance Of Gaussian Naïve Bayes For Classification With Dependencies From Archemedian Copula, Hugh E. Winston

Mathematics and Statistics

Naive Bayes is an application of Bayes theorem in which the likelihood function is factored into marginals by making the assumption that the variables are independent. Naive Bayes is typically used for classification problems in which the goal is to find the class with the largest probability given the data on hand. When the data on hand are continuous real numbers we can further assume they are class conditionally normally distributed, which is a particular version of Naive Bayes called Gaussian Naive Bayes. This paper explores when Gaussian Naive Bayes classification problems work well vs when they do not. Typically …

Control Problems For The Wave And Telegrapher's Equations On Metric Graphs, Gazi Mahmud Alam May 2022

Control Problems For The Wave And Telegrapher's Equations On Metric Graphs, Gazi Mahmud Alam

Mathematics and Statistics

The dissertation focuses on control problems for the wave and telegrapher's equations on metric graphs. In the first part, an algorithm is constructed to solve the exact control problems on finite intervals. The algorithm is implemented numerically to solve the exact control problems on finite intervals. Moreover, we developed numerical algorithms for the solution of control problems on metric graphs based on the recent boundary controllability results of wave equations on metric graphs. We presented numerical solutions to shape control problems on quantum graphs. Specifically, we presented the results of numerical experiments involving a three-star graph. Our second part deals …

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service agency of the United States Department of Agriculture began their work on United States Army Garrison Fort Wainwright of Alaska in 2018. In conjunction with airfield personnel, the main objective of this agency is to protect aircraft on Ladd Army Airfield (LAAF) from wildlife hazards and mitigate human-wildlife interactions on Post. The main wildlife hazard for aircraft is of the avian variety. The patterns of avian use on LAAF were examined for the first time using various non-parametric and parametric spatial methods. The main non-parametric technique applied was kernel density estimation of points …

Testing Assumptions And Bias Of A Caribou Population Estimator Through Monte Carlo Simulation, Christopher Lloyd Roberts May 2022

Testing Assumptions And Bias Of A Caribou Population Estimator Through Monte Carlo Simulation, Christopher Lloyd Roberts

Mathematics and Statistics

The Rivest method is the standard way to estimate caribou herd sizes in Alaska and the northern Canadian provinces. Biologists employ radio telemetry to detect discrete groups that make up the wider herd; the Rivest estimator provides an approximate herd size by enumerating the collared and uncollared animals within each group. A key assumption of this technique is that collared caribou mix randomly amongst the wider herd. In this report I scrutinize the accuracy of the Rivest estimator and evaluate three competing hypothesis tests for testing its random-mixing assumption under simulated conditions. The Fisher’s Exact Test is the optimal test …

A Quantum Mechanical Description Of The Diffusion Properties Of C1-C2 Hydrocarbon Molecules In Mof-74-Mg, Gemechis Degaga, Amanda Studinger, Loredana Valenzano-Slough

Michigan Tech Publications

Among the numerous metal organic framework (MOF) families, of significant importance is the MOF-74-M series (M = metal, -also known as CPO-27-M), characterized by a high density of not fully coordinated open metal site centers; this peculiarity has been demonstrated to translate into a higher hydrocarbons’ separation potential than other known MOFs and zeolites. To provide a more comprehensive description of the behavior of the hydrocarbon molecules within the MOF-74 cavity, diffusion processes and corresponding diffusion barriers of small hydrocarbons in the MOF-74-Mg were modeled. This work provides a description of the molecular transport processes of CH4, C2H2, C2H4 and …

An Econometric Analysis Of Collegiate Player Performance To Create A Model For Forecasting Contributions To Team Success, Evan Seely May 2022

An Econometric Analysis Of Collegiate Player Performance To Create A Model For Forecasting Contributions To Team Success, Evan Seely

Undergraduate Theses

At the conclusion of each basketball season, each conference selects 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd all-conference teams based on player performance for that season. Often, these all-conference teams reflect biases in the media rather than evaluations based on player performance alone. The baseball statistic Wins Above Replacement, WAR, is useful in quantifying the impact of each player through the number of wins contributed to his respective team by comparing each player to a designated replacement level player. This statistic can also be applied to basketball analysis to perform a similar function as in baseball, despite …

Student Theses

A new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), popularly known as COVID-19 has been associated with new-onsets of neurological and cardiovascular symptoms after infecting people. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a form of dysautonomia, can occur after a viral or bacterial infection. Some symptoms of POTS include dizziness, postural tachycardia, presyncope and orthostatic intolerance. There has been some evidence that has identified POT following COVID-19 in some patients. Commonly affected are female long haulers of child-bearing age sharing a strikingly similar demographic to most autoimmune disorders. The most dominant symptom of long haul POTS at this point may be palpitations/ …

Uv Curable, Flame Retardant, And Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives With Two-Way Shape Memory Effect, Xiaming Feng, Guoqiang Li

Faculty Publications

Novel UV curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with exceptional flame retardancy and promising two-way shape memory effect have been developed using a commercial diethyl phosphoramidate as multifunctional tackifier for the first time. The abundant hydrogen bonds and high viscosity of the resultant networks contribute to the low temperature and repeatable adhesions. The PSA with 5 wt % tackifier exhibited the best overall adhesion at both 25 °C and 0 °C, especially with the relatively high peak adhesive stress and the highest work of adhesion. Owing to the synergistic effect with nitrogen containing acylate monomer, the 15 wt% diethyl phosphoramidate endowed …

Nine Ways Grandparenting Is Changing With The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madonna Harrington Meyer

Population Health Research Brief Series

Grandparents play a vital role in providing care for their grandchildren in the United States. However, long-term sociodemographic changes, including lower fertility rates and changes in employment and technology, along with massive upheavals prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic are changing grandparenting in important ways. This research brief describes these long-term sociodemographic changes and uses in-depth interviews conducted before the pandemic to illustrate nine specific ways grandparenting is shifting in the U.S. It concludes by calling for more supportive social welfare programs to support working families and reduce the reliance on grandparents for meeting childcare and financial needs.

The Multidimensional Test Anxiety Scale: A Latent Profile Analysis And An Examination Of Measurement Invariance, Gabrielle Francis May 2022

The Multidimensional Test Anxiety Scale: A Latent Profile Analysis And An Examination Of Measurement Invariance, Gabrielle Francis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Standardized testing is an integral part of the English and American education systems. The objectives of these tests are to evaluate students, teachers, and schools. However, this evaluation has unintended consequences, one of which is test anxiety. Over the last 50 years, there has been an increase in studies on test anxiety because of the widespread use of standardized tests (Hembree, 1988; von der Embse et al., 2019). However, two areas that have seen little attention are the measurement invariance of test anxiety scales across demographic groups, and the creation of classification standards for these test anxiety scales to increase …

Advanced Science Research Center

Skeletal stem cells (SSCs, or mesenchymal stromal cells typically referred to as mesenchymal stem cells from the bone marrow) are a dynamic progenitor population that can enter quiescence, self-renew or differentiate depending on regenerative demand and cues from their niche environment. However, ex vivo, in culture, they are grown typically on hard polystyrene surfaces, and this leads to rapid loss of the SSC phenotype. While materials are being developed that can control SSC growth and differentiation, very few examples of dynamic interfaces that reflect the plastic nature of the stem cells have, to date, been developed. Achieving such interfaces is …

Assessing The Demographic And Genetic Contributions Of Precocial Males In A Naturally Spawning Population Of Coho Salmon, Erika M. King May 2022

Assessing The Demographic And Genetic Contributions Of Precocial Males In A Naturally Spawning Population Of Coho Salmon, Erika M. King

Fisheries

Despite the importance of alternative life history strategies to population productivity, little is known about the mating structure of precocial ('jack') males in Pacific salmon. The number of successful matings obtained by jacks in the wild is not well characterized and the impact of including or excluding jacks in the management of Pacific salmon populations is unknown. This study aims to fill knowledge gaps in the understanding of jack life history by 1) determining the typical contribution of jacks to the next generation in a natural mating population; and 2) estimating the impact of jacks on genetic diversity. The study …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Heat shock transcription factor (Hsf) plays a critical role in regulating heat resistance. Here, 2950 Hsf family genes were identified from 111 horticultural and representative plants. More Hsf genes were detected in higher plants than in lower plants. Based on all Hsf genes, we constructed a phylogenetic tree, which indicated that Hsf genes of each branch evolved independently after species differentiation. Furthermore, we uncovered the evolutionary trajectories of Hsf genes by motif analysis. There were only six motifs (M1–M6) in lower plants, and then four novel motifs (M7–M10) appeared in higher plants. However, the motifs of some Hsf …
