Modelling And Solving The Split-Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem, Considering Loading Constraints And Spoilage Of Commodities, Sherif A. Fahmy, Mohamed L. Gaafar May 2022

Modelling And Solving The Split-Delivery Vehicle Routing Problem, Considering Loading Constraints And Spoilage Of Commodities, Sherif A. Fahmy, Mohamed L. Gaafar

Faculty Journal Articles

In a typical supply chain, an aggregation hub is a strategically located facility that collects, processes and distributes commodities. This requires determining the collection/distribution fleet size, and the shortest routes to/from the served locations. Perishable commodities further require considering the order of collection/delivery and the loading positions inside the trucks. In this paper, the split-delivery vehicle routing problem (SDVRP) is modelled and solved, considering multiple perishable commodities, loading constraints, cross-docking and a heterogeneous fleet of trucks. The objective is to manage a fleet of trucks operating from an aggregation hub in order to minimise the total transportation and products spoilage …

Iterative Learning Control - Moving From Theory To Applications, Bing Chu, Eric Rogers May 2022

Iterative Learning Control - Moving From Theory To Applications, Bing Chu, Eric Rogers

CONTROL 2022: 13th United Kingdom Automatic Control Council (UKACC) International Conference

Iterative learning control applies to systems performing the same finite duration task repeatedly. Each execution is known as a trial, and the finite duration of each trial is known as the trial length. A reference trajectory is specified, and then the design can proceed based on minimizing the error sequence with entries formed as the difference between the output on a trial and the reference vector. The starting point for ILC is widely accepted as research in the mid1980s in the robotics area. Since then, ILC has remained an active area of research, starting with the underlying theory and proceeding …

Twisting Tales: A Guide To Fairytale Adaptation, Tori Forster May 2022

Twisting Tales: A Guide To Fairytale Adaptation, Tori Forster

MFA in Illustration & Visual Culture

“Twisting Tales” is a guidebook examining fairytales and the realm of fairytale adaptation. To begin with, I define fairytales by expanding on Tolkien’s essay “On Fairy Stories”. By defining fairytales as abstracted tales set in the realm of Faerie, adaptations of fairytales become an avenue in which to explore world building and narrative, which fairytales naturally lend themselves to. The guidebook also explores more troubling tropes and trends in the fairytale, particularly those regarding women. Marcia K. Lieberman’s essay “Someday My Prince Will Come”critiques heroines in fairytales and serves as a dialogue for the role of the female protagonist in …

Professional Judgment And Emergency Fund Programs: An Opportunity To Improve, Nancy Conneely, Aaron Taylor, Leandra Ross May 2022

Professional Judgment And Emergency Fund Programs: An Opportunity To Improve, Nancy Conneely, Aaron Taylor, Leandra Ross

Journal of Student Financial Aid

In Spring 2020, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of students facing financial hardships increased as job losses mounted and schools closed their campuses. Schools, the federal government, and other organizations stepped in to help students deal with emergencies; but there are often hurdles to quickly getting emergency aid into the hands of students. While Title IV of the Higher Education Act provides a viable response mechanism through its emergency aid provisions, these provisions are underutilized. In this paper, we discuss ways in which schools can more effectively use professional judgment authority to quickly get emergency aid …

Mite Infestation Of Two Species Of Xenosaurus (Squamata: Xenosauridae) From Contrasting Environments, Jonhatan Olvera-Arrieta, Geoffrey R. Smith, Guillermo A. Woolrich-Piña, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Héctor Gadsen May 2022

Mite Infestation Of Two Species Of Xenosaurus (Squamata: Xenosauridae) From Contrasting Environments, Jonhatan Olvera-Arrieta, Geoffrey R. Smith, Guillermo A. Woolrich-Piña, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Héctor Gadsen

Western North American Naturalist

Mite prevalence and load can vary among populations and species of lizards. We report on chigger mite (Eutrombicula alfreddugesi) prevalence and load in a temperate population of Xenosaurus fractus and a subtropical population of Xenosaurus rectocollaris. Mites were more prevalent and found in greater numbers (i.e., higher load) on X. rectocollaris than on X. fractus. Mite load in both species did not differ between July/August and October/November. Differences in mite load and prevalence among populations and species of Xenosaurus from different types of environment suggest that more study is needed to understand how environmental factors affect …

Nondelegation And Originalism, Jack M. Beermann May 2022

Nondelegation And Originalism, Jack M. Beermann

Faculty Scholarship

Originalism certainly isn’t what it used to be. From a fringe theory with few adherents it has, in recent decades, become the dominant conservative legal weapon deployed against nearly every liberal legal development since the dawn of the twentieth century, particularly the acceptance of the administrative state and the delegation of rulemaking power to agencies. Professor Kurt Eggert’s recent article adds to the mounting evidence that originalism is not a credible legal theory especially when deployed against Congress’s choices concerning the proper structure of the regulatory state.

Transit Equity In Southeast Brooklyn, Noam J. Gal May 2022

Transit Equity In Southeast Brooklyn, Noam J. Gal

Student Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, planners have considered numerous proposals to expand the subway system further into Southeast Brooklyn including the Utica Avenue Line and the Interborough Express. It remains to be seen whether any of these megaprojects will come to fruition. This honors thesis analyzes the equity impact that Brooklyn’s largest transit desert has had upon its inhabitants. I use an interdisciplinary approach to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data to explain why the subway does not extend into the focus area, how residents have adapted to the status quo, and what policymakers can do to improve transit equity in Southeast …

The Gun Control Paradox In The States: Evidence From National Polls, William A. Rose May 2022

The Gun Control Paradox In The States: Evidence From National Polls, William A. Rose

Student Theses and Dissertations

The majority has supported gun control policies in the U.S. for decades, but these policies have stayed unimplemented. While much progress has been made on research of this “gun control paradox” at the federal level, determining whether this dynamic towards gun control persists amongst state governments has seen next to none. Previously, this was due to lack of polling data to estimate public opinion among state populations. However, today, new resources have become available that allow for reliable estimates to be made. This study uses the disaggregation of national polling data on gun control from the past decade to determine …

Chronotype, Shift Work, And Sleep Problems Among Emergency Medicine Clinicians, Emily L. Hirsh, Thomas W. Britt, Zachary Klinefelter, Justine Liptak, Cody Meyers, Katie Daniels, Lauren A. Fowler

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Extensive research has demonstrated that shift work can be detrimental to sleep. Chronotype, the preference for time of day to sleep or be active, can influence how we function at different times of day and how shift work impacts us. This study was designed to assess the chronotype of emergency physicians (EPs) and emergency advanced practice providers (EAPPs) and examine how chronotype was related to sleep problems and shifts worked over a three-month period.

Methods: A survey assessing chronotype and sleep quality was sent to 225 EPs and EAPPs in a single, large academic Department of Emergency Medicine. An …

Moving Beyond Niceness: Reading Bell Hooks Into The Radical Potential For The Discipline, Alex J. Moffett-Bateau, Jenn M. Jackson May 2022

Moving Beyond Niceness: Reading Bell Hooks Into The Radical Potential For The Discipline, Alex J. Moffett-Bateau, Jenn M. Jackson

Publications and Research

In honor of bell hooks’ legacy, we engage with her Black feminist scholarship to parse out what she offers to the study of Black politics. We explore the ways hooks rebuffed compulsory calls for niceness and obligatory congeniality via respectability politics. By interrogating the politics of the Black middle class, we locate hooks’ intellectual works as a repudiation of a “politics of niceness” that seeks to maintain the violent status quo of white capitalist heteropatriarchy. We then draw out why the rejection of a politics of niceness matters within broader discussions of race, power, politics, and oppression.

Grotesque Masculinities In The Works Of Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, And Padgett Powell, Matt Brandon Blasi May 2022

Grotesque Masculinities In The Works Of Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, And Padgett Powell, Matt Brandon Blasi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

“Grotesque Masculinities in the Works of Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, and Padgett Powell” explores how these authors use the grotesque to complicate, distort, and criticize hegemonic white Southern masculinity as represented in contemporary American literature. In “Grotesque Masculinities,” I argue that the presence of the grotesque mode in these author’s works offers a unique critical perspective by which to better understand how masculinity is constructed by and for white Southern men in literature, and how alternative configurations of identity are not only possible, but necessary to decenter whiteness and heteronormativity as dominant categories. Using what sociologists refer to as body-reflexive …

Event-Based Imaging Polarimeter, Michael R. Hawks, Michael L. Dexter May 2022

Event-Based Imaging Polarimeter, Michael R. Hawks, Michael L. Dexter

Faculty Publications

The design and initial experimental results from an event-based, rotating-polarizer, imaging polarimeter are presented. The speed of division-of-time imaging systems is traditionally constrained by the frame rate of the focal plane sensor and the need to sample several polarization angles during rotation. The asynchronous event reporting of event-based cameras (EBCs) frees these constraints but introduces challenges. The Stokes vectors used to describe polarization are based on irradiance, but EBCs are inherently change-detection systems that struggle to estimate irradiance. Two methods of estimating the polarization state without first recovering irradiance images are presented and compared. The DAVIS 346 sensor enables simultaneous …

Impacts Of Artificial Light At Night (Alan) In Marine Ecosystems – A Review, Laura F.B. Marangoni, Thomas Davies, Tim Smyth, R Airam, Mark Hamann, Cristian Duarte, Kellie Pendoley, Jørgen Berge, Elena Maggi, Oren Levy

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The globally widespread adoption of Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) began in the mid-20th century. Yet, it is only in the last decade that a renewed research focus has emerged into its impacts on ecological and biological processes in the marine environment that are guided by natural intensities, moon phase, natural light and dark cycles and daily light spectra alterations. The field has diversified rapidly from one restricted to impacts on a handful of vertebrates, to one in which impacts have been quantified across a broad array of marine and coastal habitats and species. Here, we review the current understanding …

Networks Of Necessity: Simulating Covid-19 Mitigation Strategies For Disabled People And Their Caregivers, Thomas E. Valles, Hannah Shoenhard, Joseph Zinski, Sarah Trick, Mason A. Porter, Michael R. Lindstrom

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Abstract

A major strategy to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is the limiting of in-person contacts. However, limiting contacts is impractical or impossible for the many disabled people who do not live in care facilities but still require caregivers to assist them with activities of daily living. We seek to determine which interventions can best prevent infections of disabled people and their caregivers. To accomplish this, we simulate COVID-19 transmission with a compartmental model that includes susceptible, exposed, asymptomatic, symptomatically ill, hospitalized, and removed/recovered individuals. The networks on which we simulate disease spread incorporate heterogeneity in the risk levels of …
