An Analysis Of The Auger Peak Shift Between Barium And Barium Oxide, Nicholas Zdroy
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Ion thrusters, an increasingly popular method of space propulsion, have requirements for longevity and efficiency that are unique to the conditions of space travel. Negligible levels of drag in space along with the lack of interstellar gas stations are perfect conditions for the use of low-thrust, long-life solutions like ion thrusters. These requirements for longevity and efficiency make it necessary to better understand factors that impact the efficiency of thermionic emission cathodes, an integral element in the anatomy of an ion thruster. A thermionic emission cathode’s efficiency is dependent in part upon its chemical composition. For this study, a replica …

Optimization Of Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative Alkylboron Homocoupling, Abigail Northrop
Optimization Of Copper-Catalyzed Oxidative Alkylboron Homocoupling, Abigail Northrop
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
This project optimizes a reaction that uses boron substrates and copper to form sp3-sp3 carbon-carbon bonds. This research project had three main goals: to develop a GC (gas chromatography) method that would allow us to calculate how much of the final product was formed, to optimize the model reaction, and to explore the diversity of other boron substrates that could be used. Working with the GC involved trouble shooting different methods as well as testing our internal standard, cis-decalin, to ensure that the solvent wouldn’t cause any side reactions. Standard curves were created to allow us to …

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
The primary objective of this research is synthesize a derivative of 2-methyl-7-azaindole and to determine its potency of inhibition of the Actin Related Protein (Arp 2/3) complex. A potent Arp2/3 inhibitor may be of interest in clinical anti-cancer and anti-tumor applications. Additionally, an Arp2/3 inhibitor with nanomolar potency could be used to advance basic actin dynamics research. Herein the organic synthetic efforts towards the 2-methyl-7-azaindole derivative of the known Arp2/3 inhibitor CK-666 are described. Spectroscopy as it informs our continuing efforts to synthesize our target is discussed. Further synthesis plans are discussed as they relate to successfully reaching our target …
: Mitochondrial Dna Disease Mutations Effect On In Vitro Transcription, Madeline Hedberg, Megan Bestwick
: Mitochondrial Dna Disease Mutations Effect On In Vitro Transcription, Madeline Hedberg, Megan Bestwick
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Mitochondria are traditionally known for their essential roles in cellular metabolism and energy production. In humans, approximately 80 protein subunits make up the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway in the mitochondrial inner membrane, 13 of which are encoded by the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the remaining encoded by the nuclear genome. The mtDNA is circular molecule present in multiple copies per mitochondrion, and the two strands of human mtDNA are categorized as the heavy strand and light strand. The light strand has one promoter region (LSP), while the heavy strand has two (HSP1 and HSP2). These promoter regions are essential for …

What Is An Adult?: Attributes Voted Most Central To The Construct Of Adulthood, Katie Russell, Paris Green, Allie Walter, Yanna Weisberg, Cara Ray, Maya Pillon
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
To understand the transition into adulthood, it is important to understand people’s perceptions of what it means to be an adult. We began this investigation with a bottom-up approach using the prototype analysis methodology (described by Kearns & Fincham, 2004). In Study 1, we asked 137 participants to list up to 20 attributes of adulthood. Results revealed 1,891 total linguistic units (15.5 per participant on average), which were placed into overarching categories such as “employed”. The current study is a follow-up (Study 2) where we continued the next step in the prototype analysis methodology. In this study participants rated each …

Optimal Race Strategies For Cyclists, Brendan Perez, Drew Altringer, Evan Fisette
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
For competitive cyclists, each course presents a unique set of factors and, in turn, leads to difficulty in choosing a racing strategy. Some courses confront cyclists with drastic changes in elevation while others are of a more consistent grade. Similarly, curvature varies from course to course.
Further, riders vary in their areas of strength. A rider’s power curve maps their instantaneous power output 𝑃 in W/kg over the amount of time that the rider can sustain that power level in seconds. The shape of a rider’s power curve indicates their riding style.
In this paper, we model the optimal …
Is Retinoid X Receptor Alpha A Mtdna Transcription Factor?, James Weiser, Megan Bestwick
Is Retinoid X Receptor Alpha A Mtdna Transcription Factor?, James Weiser, Megan Bestwick
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Mitochondria are important organelles in eukaryotic cells due to their role in metabolism. They also have their own genome (mtDNA) which encodes many of the protein subunits within the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) pathway. The remaining protein subunits are encoded in the nuclear genome, translated in the cytosol, and imported into mitochondria. Transcriptional coordination between these two genomes to produce functional OXPHOS complexes is critical to maintaining cellular homeostasis. A major control point is transcription, this process requires regulatory proteins that determine the expression of these genes. Retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRα) is a protein that has many functions in human …
Influence Of Reactive Oxygen Species On Mitochondrial Transcription, Hanna Shields
Influence Of Reactive Oxygen Species On Mitochondrial Transcription, Hanna Shields
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Many factors influence the expression of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) which is a circular DNA molecule present in multiple copies per mitochondrion. Our aim is to understand the effect of various factors such as protein-DNA binding behavior and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on mitochondrial transcription under different conditions. We have experimentally observed changes to mitochondrial DNA transcription in both S. cerevisiae and mammalian HepG2 cells under conditions of increased reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress. The introduction of naphthoquinones such as menadione into S. cerevisiae cultures show increased oxidative stress, and results in changes to transcriptional output. Understanding …

Optimizing Forest Harvest Cycles For Carbon Sequestration, Alex Landry, Margaret Lippsmeyer, Casey Wong
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Our mathematical model aims to depict optimal harvest times for different types of forests based on the value they provide for carbon sequestration. We have developed three different models for the main forest types throughout the world, boreal forests, temperate forests, and tropical forests. For the model, we implemented a manipulated sine function for one period. By using a manipulated sine function, we are able to model the amount of carbon dioxide a tree is able to sequester over its lifetime as well as show the release of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere when the tree dies and decomposes …

Innovation In Health Science Education: An Experiential Learning Program, Lily Apedaile
International Journal of Health Sciences Education
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic disrupted health professions education on a number of different levels. Many health professions and pre-health professions students lost access to real-world clinical experience which has lead to disruptions in the healthcare workforce pipeline. At the University of Montana a diverse group of health professions educators designed an innovative experiential learning program, called Griz Health, that would allow UM students to engage in healthcare experiences while helping the campus with COVID-19 response. Because of the overwhelmingly positive response from students and community members that participated in this program, the Griz Health program was shifted from a volunteer response …

Seasonal Migration Distance Varies With Natal Dispersal And Predicts Parasitic Infection In Song Sparrows, Tosha R. Kelly, Heather L. Macgillivray, Yanina Sarquis-Adamson, Matthew J. Watson, Keith A. Hobson, Elizabeth A. Macdougall-Shackleton
Biology Publications
Seasonal migration and natal dispersal represent the major large-scale movements in the lives of animals. Individuals that are relatively prone to movement and exploration might thus be more likely to disperse and also to migrate farther. Such movement might be either negatively associated with parasitic infection (if infection prevents hosts from successful long-distance migration) or positively associated (e.g. if longer-distance migrants encounter more abundant or more diverse parasites). We examined whether natal dispersal tendency predicts seasonal migration distance in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) and whether migration distance predicts infection with bloodborne parasites upon arrival at the breeding grounds. …

Yes, Alito, There Is A Right To Privacy: Why The Leaked Dobbs Opinion Is Doctrinally Unsound, Nancy C. Marcus
ConLawNOW
The Essay details how the primary premises underlying the leaked draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization regarding abortion rights are infirm as a matter of constitutional doctrine and precedent. It addresses the doctrinal infirmities of the underlying analysis of the draft Dobbs opinion, as well as the resulting dangers posed for the protection of fundamental privacy rights and liberties in contexts even beyond abortion. The draft Dobbs opinion bases its rationale for overruling Roe v. Wade on two deeply flawed premises. First, the opinion claims that abortion had not been a recognized enumerated right prior to Roe …

Many fisheries employ fishing lights to manipulate the behaviors of target fish and to attract them toward the light; however, relatively few long-time observations of fish attraction have been performed in the field. Here, an underwater observation deck was used to examine the differences in the fish-attracting effect of light-emitting diode (LED) lights on the number of attracted fish and on their behavior in the field, using white-edged rockfish as the target species. A total of 604 ± 324, 307 ± 203 and 171 ± 106 white-edged rockfish individuals were attracted to the observation window when it was illuminated with …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The swordtip squid Uroteuthis edulis, distributed in the temperate and tropical neritic waters in the Indo-Pacific region, is a crucial component of marine ecosystems and is a target species of fisheries in the Northwest Pacific. Although studies have elucidated the growth and maturation of the squid in the southern East China Sea (ECS) shelf, few have assessed the population biology of the squid in waters in the vicinity of the southern ECS. We collected samples of swordtip squid from a trawler in Yilan Bay (YLB) between January 2011 and December 2012 to examine the growth and maturation of the squid …
Study On The Improved Radiation Boundary Conditions Based On The Quadratic B-Spline Rankine Panel Method, Ming-Chung Fang, Chun-Hsien Wu
Study On The Improved Radiation Boundary Conditions Based On The Quadratic B-Spline Rankine Panel Method, Ming-Chung Fang, Chun-Hsien Wu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study presents a higher-order Rankine source method that is based on a biquadratic B-spline scheme with an improved radiation boundary condition. This method solves flow problems under all conditions, where , including the undercritical condition ( < 0.25); this condition is present when a ship undergoes slow translational motion. The proposed method is thus more flexible than the many Rankine-source models in the literature that are applicable only to the overcritical condition ( > 0.25). Specifically, the improved radiation boundary condition is derived from upstream Seto radiation boundary conditions and by incorporating the Rayleigh damping distribution over a free surface; the improved condition is explicit and efficient for solving flow problems. In evaluations, the proposed method yields accurate solutions for unsteady flows, which are produced by an oscillating, translationally moving submerged singularity. The method is also compared …

Sensitive Analysis Of The Static Response Of Compliant Vertical Access Risers, Fuheng Li, Haiyan Guo, Xiaomin Li, Honglu Gu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Compliant vertical access risers (CVARs) are considered as efficient and robust alternative options to achieve cost efficiency and safety. Design uncertainties emerge owing to the limited understanding of the effects of various parameters related to the structural properties and marine loads. In this paper, a reasonable three-dimensional (3D) numerical model of CVAR with internal flow is presented based on the slender rod theory. Accordingly, the finite element method combined with a Newton-Raphson scheme is employed to discretize and solve the equations. A sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the structural and external load parameters on the static …

Influence Of Boundary Conditions And Internal Fluid Types On Dynamic Characteristics Of A Deepwater Riser, Lei Guo, Zong-Ming Zhu, Zhong-Jian Pan, Zhi-Ming Guo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Deepwater Steel Catenary Riser (DSCR) is the key structure of oil and gas production system in the ocean. To design an optimized DSCR system, the dynamic characteristics of the DSCR are analyzed by setting some different boundary condi-tions and internal fluid types. The main vibration mode of the DSCR is found orthogonal to both mass and stiffness according to the normalization condition of the main mode, and then the regular mode function and the jth order principal stiffness Kpj are obtained. Under different initial conditions, the transverse responses of DSCR represented by regular coordinates under arbitrary excitation are obtained. Then, …
