Potential For A Pedagogical Level-Up: Teaching First-Year Composition Through Rhetoric Of Gaming, Cayman Beeman May 2022

Potential For A Pedagogical Level-Up: Teaching First-Year Composition Through Rhetoric Of Gaming, Cayman Beeman

English (MA) Theses

Instructors of First-Year Composition courses are pursuing new ways to help integrate students into collegiate writing. One approach that has been gaining more widespread use is teaching composition through a popular medium. Inspired by these pedagogical movements, I designed a first-year composition course that approached writing through looking at different rhetorical elements of video games. During the course I encouraged students to enter into an I.R.B. approved study in which I recorded certain elements of their progression, discourse, and understanding regarding composition taught through gaming in an effort to document what was pedagogically successful, and what aspects of the course …

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Previously, we reported that 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), an Nrf2 activator, acted as a potential chemoprotectant against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mortality in mice. In view of the critical involvement of macrophages in the pathogenesis of LPS-induced endotoxemia, in the present study, we investigated the protective effects of D3T on LPS-induced proinflammatory responses in cultured murine RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line and primary peritoneal macrophages and the potential involvement of antioxidant induction, NF-κB, and Nrf2. We showed that treatment with D3T resulted in increased levels of a series of antioxidants in RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. These included the reduced form of …

Multiple Cranial Neuropathies As The Initial Presentation Of Primary Ductal Adenocarcinoma Of The Lacrimal Gland, Jane S. Kim, A D. Proia, Jason Liss, Joel Morgenlander, Landon C. Meekins

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Primary ductal adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland is a rare, aggressive malignancy that clinically and histologically resembles salivary duct carcinoma. Similar to other malignant epithelial lacrimal gland tumors, ductal adenocarcinoma typically presents with unilateral proptosis, pain, upper eyelid swelling, palpable mass, diplopia, ptosis, and blurred or decreased vision. Rarely, primary malignant epithelial lacrimal gland tumors may first present with multiple cranial neuropathies due to occult spread to the cavernous sinus, as in this case. With such a vast differential diagnosis, a practical yet systematic approach to multiple cranial neuropathies, as guided by clinical history, exam, and neuroimaging, allows for a …

[Excerpt] "Lately, people have been finding giant pet goldfish in lakes across America. You may see these tiny fish swimming in bowls at the county fair, but left alone in a lake or large pond, where they are dropped perhaps by a well-meaning child, they can grow to 20 pounds or more— and destroy ecosystems. The goldfish is a cautionary tale that has been told time and again in different forms, like Pandora’s box."

Post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS), also termed as RNA interference (RNAi) possess a great therapeutic potential. Three siRNA-based products have been recently approved that have developed a renewed interest in the scientific community to explore this alternative therapeutic area rigorously. However, several challenges are limiting their use as a widespread therapeutic agent. The limitations include their membrane impermeability, short half-life, elimination by the kidney, entrapment by the reticuloendothelial system, sequestration by plasma proteins, endosomal trap, and off-target effects.

Several delivery systems and transfection agents have been investigated to address these challenges. Still, most of the systems suffer from toxicity and low …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Functionality Of Novel 2d Material Sn3p2, Cory Stephenson

Physics Undergraduate Honors Theses

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) materials have gained a lot of attention due to their potential applications in devices and their promise to revolutionize technology. In our group, we are capable of synthesizing such materials and study their properties. I have discovered a new material of the tin-phosphorus family that displays the 2D layered structure and therefore shows potential to be used in future devices due to this reduced dimensionality from the typical three-dimensional counterpart. This 2D structure may allow for new phenomena to emerge as there is no longer any interatomic interactions along the z- axis. Under this motivation, …

Poverty, Social Isolation, Uselessness, And Loneliness: The Fears And Anxieties Of 19th-Century British Governesses, Lydia Pejovic

English (MA) Theses

This essay focuses on the prevalent fears of governesses in nineteenth-century Britain: poverty and social isolation, uselessness/redundancy, and a life of loneliness. Through looking at Emma, Jane Eyre, and The Turn of the Screw, novels which span the century (their publication dates ranging from 1814-1898), and comparing them to the historical reality of many middle class women at the time, these fears are revealed to be quite valid. The fears and anxieties displayed by the characters in the three novels are reflected in statements made by former governesses (including Mary Wollstonecraft), and are likewise reinforced through census reports and common …

Subset Selection Of Ε- Better Exponential Populations Under Heteroscedasticity, Anju Goyal, A. N. Gill, Vishal Maurya

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

Suppose we have $k( \geq 2)$independent processes/populations/sources/ treatments such that the data from $i^{th}$ treatment follow two-parameter exponential distribution with location parameter $\mu_i$ and scale parameter $\theta_i$, denoted $E(\mu_i,\theta_i )$, $i=1,\dots, k$. The location parameters $\mu_1, \dots, \mu_k$ and scale parameters $\theta_1, \dots, \theta_k$ are unknown and possibly unequal. Let $\underline{\delta}=(\mu_1 , \dots ,\mu_k, \theta_1, \dots \theta_k ) \in R^k \times R_+^k =\Omega $ and $\mu_{[k]} =max_{1\leq i \leq k}\mu_{i}$. For a given $\epsilon_1>0$, we define a set of good populations as $G=\{i:\mu_i \geq \mu_{[k]}-\epsilon_1 \}$. In this paper two-stage and one-stage subset selection procedures have been proposed to …

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

The exponential power distribution (EP) is a lifetime model that can exhibit increasing and bathtub hazard rate function. This paper aims to propose a new class of distributions called the exponential power power series (EPPS) class of distributions. The hazard function of the proposed class can be increasing, decreasing, modified bathtub (increasing-decreasing-increasing) and bathtub shaped. Among others, the exponential power geometric (EPG) distribution is presented as a special case of the proposed family. A defective version of EPG distribution is defined to estimate the fraction of long-term survivors in a population. The moments of the defective EPG distribution are obtained. …
