Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background and objectives: Hyperkinetic movement disorders, characterized by complex and overlapping motor patterns, present significant challenges in classification and treatment. The inconsistency in definitions and descriptors complicates both research and clinical communication. This study aims to provide an overview of current terminology and definitions related to spasticity and other hyperkinetic movement disorders associated with central nervous system lesions. We propose a unified terminology and classification system for spastic movement disorders (SMD).

Methods: In this scoping review, definitions of spasticity, dystonia, tremor, chorea, hemiballismus, athetosis, myoclonus, and dyssynergia were reviewed, with emphasis on overlaps and diagnostic challenges among these disorders. The …

Event-Based Vision - Archive

UEOF is the first synthetic underwater event-based optical flow dataset derived from physically-based ray-traced RGBD sequences. It was constructed using a modern video-to-event pipeline applied to rendered underwater videos. It consists of realistic event data streams with dense ground-truth flow, depth, and camera motion. The dataset is composed of 12 minutes and 51 seconds of data across 13,714 RGB frames. This results in a total of 4.94 billion events across all scenes. UEOF exhibits a high dynamic range of motion with a mean flow magnitude of 6.1 px and a median of 3.6 px. The motion distribution is heavy-tailed. While …

Ai-Powered Pathways To Open Education: Enhancing Practice And Expanding Discovery, Rebecca Mcnulty, Lily Dubach Feb 2026

Ai-Powered Pathways To Open Education: Enhancing Practice And Expanding Discovery, Rebecca Mcnulty, Lily Dubach

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Generative AI is changing how we teach and learn, and this session will show practical ways it can support open education. We will look at two everyday challenges: finding aligned open materials and spotting places in a course where open practices could enhance opportunities for collaborative learning. An instructional designer will demonstrate how custom GPTs can review a syllabus and suggest places where open pedagogy could involve students in co-creating and sharing knowledge. A librarian will show how large language models can help locate courses and syllabi that already use open practices, making it easier for faculty to discover and …

Natural Sciences Faculty Publications

The Bermuda fireworm, Odontosyllis enopla Verrill, 1900, is a marine polychaete that displays a unique bioluminescent mating ritual. Despite the first sighting of O. enopla more than 534 years ago, molecular data have been limited. Several syllid mitogenomes are currently available; however, there are only three published genes for O. enopla: two partial mitochondrial genes (16S [508 bp] and cox1 [653 bp]; 1,161 bp total) and one partial nuclear gene (18S [1,339 bp]). This study bioinformatically mined previously published transcriptomes of O. enopla for mitochondrial reads and subsequently assembled and annotated a partial mitochondrial genome (10,172 bp). The partial mitogenome …

A Case Study Of Suspected Sheep Losses Due To Chokecherry Not Death Camas, Kevin D. Welch, Clint A. Stonecipher, Stephen T. Lee, Daniel Cook, Benedict T. Green Feb 2026

A Case Study Of Suspected Sheep Losses Due To Chokecherry Not Death Camas, Kevin D. Welch, Clint A. Stonecipher, Stephen T. Lee, Daniel Cook, Benedict T. Green

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)

Death camas (Zigadenus paniculatus) is a toxic plant often associated with poisoning cases in livestock, especially in sheep, in the spring on mountain foothills. Consequently, when sheep are found dead in mountain foothills, and death camas is present, it is often implicated as the potential cause of death. However, this may be over simplistic as there may be other plants that may also contribute to, or are the cause of, death in sheep. In this study, we present a case of approximately 200 sheep out of a band of 400 that died within 24 hours of beginning to …

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Test Anxiety: Faculty Training For Supporting Students, Chichi Markham Feb 2026

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Test Anxiety: Faculty Training For Supporting Students, Chichi Markham

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Test anxiety significantly affects nursing students’ academic performance and well-being. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) offer a non-pharmacological method for alleviating anxiety; however, research on faculty-centered approaches in nursing education is limited. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to evaluate the impact of EFT training on nursing faculty’s knowledge, attitudes, and confidence regarding test anxiety, as well as on student exam performance. Guided by Lewin’s Change Theory, Stetler’s Model, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle, the initiative aimed to enhance faculty capacity to identify and address test anxiety within a prelicensure nursing program. A pre-post quality improvement design involved faculty …

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Medication Errors To Improve Patient Safety, Paulina Irish Feb 2026

Quality Improvement Project: Reducing Medication Errors To Improve Patient Safety, Paulina Irish

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Medication administration errors remain a persistent threat to patient safety in emergency department settings, where high acuity, rapid throughput, and workflow interruptions increase vulnerability to preventable adverse events. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project was to increase medication-safety knowledge scores by at least 10% and reduce medication administration error rates by 20% within eight weeks among registered nurses in a freestanding emergency department in South Texas. The project was grounded in Lewin’s Change Theory as the theoretical framework and implemented using the Plan–Do–Study–Act quality improvement model. A quasi-experimental, single-group pretest–posttest design was used with a …

The Neuroprotective Effects Of Alpha-Tocopherol As An Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Mechanistic Insights And Therapeutic Challenges, Megumi H Seese, Yuanzhong Xu Feb 2026

The Neuroprotective Effects Of Alpha-Tocopherol As An Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Mechanistic Insights And Therapeutic Challenges, Megumi H Seese, Yuanzhong Xu

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol, αToc), an antioxidant fat-soluble vitamin that prevents lipid peroxidation and modulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production, is well-known to be critical for neuroprotection. However, the underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that αToc influences neuroinflammatory processes. Here, we review recent research progress on the effects of αToc on neuroinflammation. Preclinical studies included in this narrative review were identified through PubMed searches using the keywords "alpha-tocopherol AND neuroinflammation or alpha-tocopherol AND brain AND inflammation". While many studies support a neuroprotective role of αToc, the magnitude and direction of its effects vary substantially depending on dosage, route of administration, …
