Sedation Assessment And Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kimberly Dyer, Courtney Garvey May 2022

Sedation Assessment And Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kimberly Dyer, Courtney Garvey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Nursing management of sedation medications in critical care patients is a complex responsibility, and studies have shown that proper use of sedation protocols can lead to improved patient outcomes. A knowledge gap among critical care nurses in the performance of Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS) assessments was identified within a critical care unit during the 2019 annual skills day. Inaccurate RASS assessments may lead to inaccurate sedation management according to the current unit protocol and evidence from the literature, and therefore may impact patient outcomes. This project aims to improve a clinical practice within an intensive care unit. The objective …

Popular Music And History: An Interconnected Narrative, Gwendolin Bresnan May 2022

Popular Music And History: An Interconnected Narrative, Gwendolin Bresnan

Honors Capstones

Music plays such an important role in life, and perhaps it plays an even bigger role in the context of greater society, inspiring real change. Or, do contemporary events influence music trends and not the other way around? To research this question, I will begin by looking at the history and music trends of two countries – the United States and Germany – as case studies. I will first examine peer-reviewed research detailing how history influences music and vice versa, along with research explaining how people interact with music and their listening trends during times of societal change. Then, I …

Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Assessment Of Tissue Structure And Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage, Michael Le May 2022

Nonlinear Optical Microscopy Assessment Of Tissue Structure And Chondrocyte Viability Of Articular Cartilage, Michael Le

All Theses

Articular cartilage functions to protect the ends of bones by providing a surface that can withstand compressive forces and minimize friction during movement. Collagen fibers form the organizational backbone of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in cartilage. Proteoglycans within the ECM function to retain water and provide the tissue with the swelling pressure needed to withstand compressional forces. Chondrocytes, the only type of cell found in articular cartilage, produces these collagen fibers and proteoglycans to maintain the tissue structure and function. Significant injuries to articular cartilage can damage the chondrocytes and disrupt their ability to maintain homeostasis in the tissue. Therefore, …

Oh, The Place You’Ll Go: The Effects Of Commuting Time On Work, Family, And Health Related Outcomes, Lauren Kistler

All Theses

People spend a majority of their lives working and commuting is an essential part of most workers’ daily schedule. According to the 2017 American Community Survey distributed by the U.S. Census Bureau, the average commute for Americans is approximately 27 minutes. Time spent commuting has increased in recent decades (Denstadli et al., 2017; Gimenez-Nadal & Molina, 2019; Hoehner et al., 2012; Künn‐Nelen, 2016). Commuting to work is often a source of stress for workers, and its detrimental impacts are a rising public health issue as well as an area of concern for occupational health psychologists. Commuting is not considered a …

An Analysis Of And Guide To Tamora Pierce’S Protector Of The Small Quartet As Compared To The Established Young Adult Fantasy Canon, Emma Marie Gilbert

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tamora Pierce’s work has been cited by many Young Adult fantasy authors as a major influence in recent years. Despite this, her work remains relatively obscure among librarians and readers of Young Adult literature. This paper examined one of Pierce’s Young Adult fantasy series, Protector of the Small, by comparing the series to existing works of Young Adult fantasy literature commonly accepted as classic or canonical literature. Among the comparative works were titles authored by C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, and Philip Pullman. Comparison was character-focused, with emphasis on the representation of parents, other sympathetic adults, peers, and …

Playing Cassino With Reinforcement Learning, Edmund Yong May 2022

Playing Cassino With Reinforcement Learning, Edmund Yong

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Reinforcement learning algorithms have been used to create game-playing agents for various games—mostly, deterministic games such as chess, shogi, and Go. This study used Deep-Q reinforcement learning to create an agent that plays a non-deterministic card game, Cassino. This agent’s performance was compared against the performance of a Cassino mobile app. Results showed that the trained models did not perform well and had trouble training around build actions which are important in Cassino. Future research could experiment with other reinforcement learning algorithms to see if they are better at training around build actions.

Doomscrolling: How Science Journalism Can Fight Climate Despair, Rachel Gow May 2022

Doomscrolling: How Science Journalism Can Fight Climate Despair, Rachel Gow

Student Theses 2015-Present

This thesis explores how the compulsive consumption of negative climate news leads to passivity and what science journalists can do to galvanize rather than traumatize readers. While journalists must alert the public of the climate crisis’ severity, they should avoid creating a too-late-to-help narrative. This thesis attempts to find a balance in the tones of intensity and optimism in environmental communications. The first chapter establishes climate change as human-caused before exploring the history of climate communications and its contributions to eco-anxiety. The second chapter looks at the use of emotional pleas in climate change reporting as found in fake climate …

Copper(I) And Silver(I) Complexes Of Olefins, Alkynes, And Cyclopropenes And Their Applications, Anurag Noonikara Poyil

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Poly(pyrazolyl)borates are very popular ligands in organometallic chemistry due to their attractive properties. It is easy to modify the steric and electronic properties of these ligands by changing the pyrazolyl substituents. Fluorinated tris(pyrazolyl)borates are used to stabilize many reactive metal ions. The metal complexes of them are used for multiple applications. These ligands are extensively used to isolate and stabilize many coinage metal complexes (Cu, Ag, and Au). We have synthesized comparably less explored fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and utilized them to isolate several π-ligands (olefin, alkyne, and cyclopropene) complexes of copper(I) and silver(I). Chapter 2 of this research work focuses …

Helicopter Parenting And Young Adult Well-Being: Differences By Immigration Status, Gender, And Race, Miriam Marcus May 2022

Helicopter Parenting And Young Adult Well-Being: Differences By Immigration Status, Gender, And Race, Miriam Marcus

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Helicopter parenting is a relatively new phenomenon that involves parental overinvolvement in their kids’ lives. It can manifest in the form of overcontrol of their kids’ decisions, for example, so helicopter parents may contact their children’s professors about changing their grades, or they may control who their children spend time with. Research has shown that helicopter parenting has overall negative effects on young adults, especially regarding their well-being and autonomy. The effects of helicopter parenting on people who come from varying backgrounds can differ, though, and this is something that should be studied. This study was completed through the administration …

Tribal Identity And The Rise Of The American Indian/Alaskan Native Population, Angel M. Stevens May 2022

Tribal Identity And The Rise Of The American Indian/Alaskan Native Population, Angel M. Stevens

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Today, most tribal nations in the United States identify by federal recognition, yet on the American Community Survey, American Indian/Alaskan Native respondents can self-identify as a member of a specific tribal nation. Most researchers argues that this tribal identification fortifies the reflection of the American Indian/Alaskan Native identity. There are 574 federally recognized tribes in the United States today. Between 2000-2020, the US Census Bureau and the American Community Survey noted a significant surge in the American Indian/Alaskan Native population. This population growth went from a mere 2 million to almost 10 million in a 20-year time span. In this …

Has There Been Another “Ferguson Effect”?, Megan Majewski

Political Science Theses and Capstones

On May 25th, 2020, America stood still as they watched the video of Officer Derek Chauvin press his knee onto the neck of George Floyd leading to his death. Protests, riots, and calls to defund the police all ensued in the following months. I focus on how Floyd’s death changed attitudes towards law enforcement and may have contributed to an increase in crime, similar to the idea of a Ferguson effect, perhaps there was a Floyd effect in 2021. I focused this research on 69 cities, using crime data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association. I then measured …

Genetic Analysis Of The Rare, Colorado Endemic Rocky Mountain Monkeyflower, Mimulus Gemmiparus, Branson Wetzstein

Master's Theses

Mimulus gemmiparus is a rare, Colorado endemic plant which possesses a limited range, strict habitat requirement, and unique life history. Most peculiarly, Mimulus gemmiparus seemingly relies entirely on clonal spread using vegetative propagules known as brood bulbils to persist year to year. This inconspicuous annual is only found within a narrow range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, possessing a total known range of about 2500 km2. There are currently 11 known natural populations of Mimulus gemmiparus spread across three general regions: North (Larimer, Boulder, and Grand Counties), Central (Clear Creek and Jefferson Counties), and South (Jefferson County). Lack of sexual reproduction, …

The Use Of Hallucinogens In The Treatment Of Mental Health Disorders, Brianna Gagen May 2022

The Use Of Hallucinogens In The Treatment Of Mental Health Disorders, Brianna Gagen

Honors College Theses

The percent of people with mental health disorders in the United States have skyrocketed over the past decade. With stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health and the symptoms associated with it, often those that are suffering do not receive sufficient treatment, as they might with a physical illness. The current, common treatment options for common psychological disorders, like depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, are sometimes not effective in patients, due to resistance or poor response outcomes. Consequently, in order to research alternative therapeutic approaches for mental health disorders, scientists are researching the effects of several hallucinogenic drugs in …

Sangaku In Multiple Geometries: Examining Japanese Temple Geometry Beyond Euclid, Nathan Hartmann May 2022

Sangaku In Multiple Geometries: Examining Japanese Temple Geometry Beyond Euclid, Nathan Hartmann

Honors College Theses

When the country of Japan was closed from the rest of the world from 1603 until
1867 during the Edo period, the field of mathematics developed in a different way
from how it developed in the rest of the world. One way we see this development
is through the sangaku, the thousands of geometric problems hung in various Shinto and Buddhist temples throughout the country. Written on wooden tablets by people from numerous walks of life, all these problems hold true within Euclidean geometry. During the 1800s, while Japan was still closed, non-Euclidean geometries began to develop across the …

Proceed With Caution: Safety, Peace, And Collective Responsibility, Rebecca Potts May 2022

Proceed With Caution: Safety, Peace, And Collective Responsibility, Rebecca Potts

Honors College Theses

Throughout my childhood, my parents often took me out into nature to go hiking, camping, and just explore. Now when I am in nature, I am reminded of my childhood and reflect on the memories of safety and comfort that I experienced, but through the lens of the person that I am today. As I have learned about and engaged with people in my community, I realized that their experiences and views of being outdoors and in the environments that I grew up feeling comfortable in are much different than mine. These different experiences are based on factors such as …

Quantum Dimension Polynomials: A Networked-Numbers Game Approach, Nicholas Gaubatz May 2022

Quantum Dimension Polynomials: A Networked-Numbers Game Approach, Nicholas Gaubatz

Honors College Theses

The Networked-Numbers Game--a mathematical "game'' played on a simple graph--is incredibly accessible and yet surprisingly rich in content. The Game is known to contain deep connections to the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers. On the other hand, Quantum Dimension Polynomials (QDPs)--enumerative expressions traditionally understood through root systems--corresponding to the above Lie algebras are complicated to derive and often inaccessible to undergraduates. In this thesis, the Networked-Numbers Game is defined and some known properties are presented. Next, the significance of the QDPs as a method to count combinatorially interesting structures is relayed. Ultimately, a novel closed-form expression of …

The Contradiction Of The Welfare Dictatorship: The Stasi’S Role In Preserving And Undermining East German Human Rights, Mallory Wooldridge May 2022

The Contradiction Of The Welfare Dictatorship: The Stasi’S Role In Preserving And Undermining East German Human Rights, Mallory Wooldridge

Honors College Theses

Constructed four years after WWII in a kind of pendulum swing response to the Third Reich, the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was an experiment in socialism. Under the Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands (The Socialist Unity Party of Germany, SED) no East German was to go hungry, unemployment would be eradicated, housing guaranteed, women treated as equals, and human rights interwoven into the fabric of this socialist society. However, SED socialism in practice did not conform to this original vision and would eventually represent the disillusionment with the socialist project as a whole.

This project seeks to understand human rights in the …

Simulation Of Li Dendrite Inhibition In Lithium Battery By Phase-Field Method, Yao Ren May 2022

Simulation Of Li Dendrite Inhibition In Lithium Battery By Phase-Field Method, Yao Ren

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Lithium (Li) dendrite growth poses serious challenges for the development of Li metal batteries which also stops the footsteps of human utilizing the environment-friendly new power source. Replacing liquid electrolyte with solid electrolyte can not only inhibit the dendrite growth by mechanical suppression, but also introduce more possibilities to the electrochemistry of battery. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood, and most theoretical works focus on pure liquid electrolyte, ignoring the mechanical strain effects. Here we developed a phase-field model which simulates the Li dendrite growth to study the competition between diffusion and deposition rates, the pure elastic …
