Effects Of Self-Reflection On The Perceived Value Of Peer Feedback In A Course Using Team-Based Learning, Jennifer M. Fisher
Effects Of Self-Reflection On The Perceived Value Of Peer Feedback In A Course Using Team-Based Learning, Jennifer M. Fisher
College of Education Dissertations
This study aimed to examine four factors contributing to an understanding of the effect self-reflection has on students’ valuation and confidence in peer assessment and how the type of learner affects those same factors. The type of learner was identified as either a high self-regulated learner or a low self-regulated learner through the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. Despite the requirement of teaching and measuring soft skills in allied health, little research is available to direct best practice and protocol in teaching, measuring, and documenting these skills. Self-regulated learning served as the theoretical framework, and the sample for this experimental …

Gender, Socioeconomic Status, Race, And Change Over Time On Science Achievement For A Northwest Arkansas District, Billy Kim Maxey
College of Education Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the effects of gender, SES, race, and change over time on academic performance as measured by ACT Aspire Summative Science Assessment scores. Scores chosen for this study were from the 2018-2019 10thgrade students in a Northwest Arkansas school district and these same students’ scores from their 7th-grade year in 2015-2016 to determine if change over time existed. The samples for this study were chosen from one Northwest Arkansas school district. ACT Aspire Summative Science Assessment scores were used to provide the academic performance data for the dependent variable used in each hypothesis. …

Protective Effects Of Caffeine Via Microglia In A Rodent Model Of Preterm Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury, Serena Beri
Protective Effects Of Caffeine Via Microglia In A Rodent Model Of Preterm Hypoxic Ischemic Brain Injury, Serena Beri
Honors Scholar Theses
This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of caffeine, a common treatment for infant respiratory distress. Caffeine is often given to preterm infants to enhance respiratory drive. Many of these same infants are at risk for hypoxia-ischemia (HI) -- a brain injury that occurs due to a lack of blood and oxygen supply to the brain and involves tissue loss. This injury can lead to major consequences such as learning and motor disorders such as cerebral palsy. Although caffeine has been widely used to increase respiratory drive in preterm infants, some emergent research suggests it may have secondary benefits in protecting …
Sec Reporting Of Cybersecurity Incidents, Michaela Morosky
Sec Reporting Of Cybersecurity Incidents, Michaela Morosky
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper documents the reporting to the SEC of 197 major incidents of cybersecurity breaches among public firms in the years 2011-2019. My goal is to contribute to the debate on the need to revise the disclosure guidance by evaluating the extent to which cybersecurity breaches are disclosed in SEC filings under the current regulatory regime. In evaluating the individual breaches, I document whether prior to the SEC’s 2022 proposed amendment, firms were already following the SEC recommendation of disclosing material cybersecurity breaches in a timely manner. I find that it is extremely rare for a firm to follow the …
Associations Between Trauma History And Dimensions Of Self-Concept In College Students, Francisco Carrillo-Alvarez
Associations Between Trauma History And Dimensions Of Self-Concept In College Students, Francisco Carrillo-Alvarez
Honors Scholar Theses
Past research in the literature of the self has considered the influence of potentially traumatic or adverse events. In this study, we aim to explore this relationship among undergraduate students utilizing various measures of self-concept including global self-worth, self-concept clarity and domain specific measures of self-perception. Various measures were administered to 308 participants that aimed to determine the instances of potentially traumatic events experienced and the subjective level of distress, in addition to the self-concept measures of global self-worth, self-concept clarity and the domain specific measures of self-perception including self-fulfillment, autonomy, and emotional self-adjustment. The results reveal that global self-worth …
Dimension Theory Of Conformal Iterated Function Systems, Sharon Sneha Spaulding
Dimension Theory Of Conformal Iterated Function Systems, Sharon Sneha Spaulding
Honors Scholar Theses
This thesis is an expository investigation of the conformal iterated function system (CIFS) approach to fractals and their dimension theory. Conformal maps distort regions, subject to certain constraints, in a controlled way. Let $\mathcal{S} = (X, E, \{\phi_e\}_{e \in E})$ be an iterated function system where $X$ is a compact metric space, $E$ is a countable index set, and $\{\phi_e\}_{e \in E}$ is a family of injective and uniformly contracting maps. If the family of maps $\{\phi_e\}_{e \in E}$ is also conformal and satisfies the open set condition, then the distortion properties of conformal maps can be extended to the …
The Influence Of Tetrabenazine On Operant Behavior And Binge-Like Eating Model In Rats, Reileigh Fleeher
The Influence Of Tetrabenazine On Operant Behavior And Binge-Like Eating Model In Rats, Reileigh Fleeher
Honors Scholar Theses
Tetrabenazine (TBZ), a vesicular monoamine transporter-2 (VMAT-2) inhibitor that preferentially depletes dopamine (DA), produces depressive symptoms including motivational symptoms in humans. In rodents, it reduces selection of high-effort effort alternatives in effort-based choice tasks, but does not affect food intake or preference (Nunes et al. 2013; Yang et al. 2020). However, no studies have focused on the effects of TBZ on binge-like eating to determine if it would influence “hedonic eating”. The current study used both binge-like eating and effort-based operant tasks in rats. To assess effects on binge-like eating, non-food restricted rats (n=8) were exposed to chocolate over 12 …

As Seen On Screen: American Ambivalence Shown Through Death Penalty And Vigilante Films, Lisette Donewald
Honors Scholar Theses
The United States is one of the last western nations still practicing capital punishment. A history of and commitment to vigilantism and its ideals offers an explanation of America’s retention of capital punishment. Employing scholarship on law and popular culture and vigilantism, this thesis finds that pro-death penalty frames are prevalent in vigilante films while anti-death penalty frames are prevalent in films that focus specifically upon capital punishment. Since the 1960’s however, there has been a gradual shift towards anti-death penalty frames and away from pro-death penalty frames as well as changes in the themes presented in the two genres …
Punishment Vs. Rehabilitation: A Discourse On American Prison Reform & Comparative Analysis To Swedish Incarceration, Lauren Hipplewitz
Punishment Vs. Rehabilitation: A Discourse On American Prison Reform & Comparative Analysis To Swedish Incarceration, Lauren Hipplewitz
Honors Scholar Theses
The infrastructure of the United States prison system continues to evolve through a series of policy changes and reforms. Throughout these developments, however, the institution continues to remain rooted in the philosophy of harsh penalization. This thesis incorporates a comparative analysis between the concept of perpetrator punishment within the American federal prison system to the concept of rehabilitative justice found in the Swedish system. I conceptualize the underlying “goals” of imprisonment within the United States and Sweden and examine how they serve as an operational foundation for both institutions. I analyze American prison reform that took place during the “War …

Ai-Informed Approaches To Keyword Generation, Text Summarization, And Document Clustering For Improved Resource Discovery, Charlie Harper, Anne Kumer, Shelby Stuart, Evan Meszaros
Researchers, Instructors, & Staff Scholarship
Academic and cultural institutions are grappling with problems of how to organize, label, and search disparate bodies of texts. As aggregators, preservers, and disseminators of substantial repositories of digital texts, research libraries are naturally situated at the heart of these problems. This chapter explores how unsupervised machine learning may be used to capture and simplify the complexity and nuances of text. Traditional approaches to improving discoverability and accessibility of text through metadata and controlled vocabularies have time-tested strengths. As the volume of digital data explodes, the obstacles and limitations of traditional approaches become more pronounced, and machine learning “show(s) the …

Seasonal Trends In Adult Apparent Survival And Reproductive Trade-Offs Reveal Potential Constraints To Earlier Nesting In A Migratory Bird, Kathleen R. Callery, John A. Smallwood, Anjolene R. Hunt, Emilie R. Snyder, Julie A. Heath
Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Birds aim to optimize resources for feeding young and self-maintenance by timing reproduction to coincide with peak food availability. When reproduction is mistimed, birds could incur costs that affect their survival. We studied whether nesting phenology correlated with the apparent survival of American kestrels (Falco sparverius) from two distinct populations and examined trends in clutch-initiation dates. We estimated apparent survival using multi-state mark-recapture models with nesting timing, nesting success, sex, age, and weather covariates. Nesting timing predicted the apparent survival of successful adults; however, the effect differed between populations. Early nesting kestrels had higher apparent survival than later nesters in …

The Future Of Ai Accountability In The Financial Markets, Gina-Gail S. Fletcher, Michelle M. Le
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Consumer interaction with the financial market ranges from applying for credit cards, to financing the purchase of a home, to buying and selling securities. And with each transaction, the lender, bank, and brokerage firm are likely utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) behind the scenes to augment their operations. While AI’s ability to process data at high speeds and in large quantities makes it an important tool for financial institutions, it is imperative to be attentive to the risks and limitations that accompany its use. In the context of financial markets, AI’s lack of decision-making transparency, often called the “black box problem,” …

Solving For Law Firm Inclusion: The Necessity Of Lawyer Well-Being, Katrina Lee
Solving For Law Firm Inclusion: The Necessity Of Lawyer Well-Being, Katrina Lee
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Chances are, in a room of one hundred law firm partners in the United States, at most, one Black woman would be present. Statistically, if there were a Black, Latinx, or Asian woman in that room, she would be the only one. Women of color make up only 3.79 percent of all partners, counting equity and nonequity partners. The percentage of Black women among all partners has remained solidly under one percent—0.57 percent in 2009 and 0.80 percent in 2020. And so, women of color lawyers starting at law firms inevitably enter spaces that are overwhelmingly white and male—spaces where …

Background: Obesity increases the risk for human abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and enhances Ang II (angiotensin II)-induced AAA formation in C57BL/6J mice. Obesity is also associated with increases in perivascular fat that expresses proinflammatory markers including SAA (serum amyloid A). We previously reported that deficiency of SAA significantly reduces Ang II-induced inflammation and AAA in hyperlipidemic apoE-deficient mice. In this study. we investigated whether adipose tissue-derived SAA plays a role in Ang II-induced AAA in obese C57BL/6J mice.
Methods: The development of AAA was compared between male C57BL/6J mice (wild type), C57BL/6J mice lacking SAA1.1, SAA2.1, and SAA3 …

Adolescent Dating Violence: Attachment Style And Parents' Unhealthy Marital Relationship As Possible Predictors, Karli Spann
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study tests whether insecure attachment style and parents’ modeling of unhealthy relationships predict adolescent dating violence (ADV) victimization. Also tested was the possible moderating role of secure attachment on the relation between parental modeling of unhealthy relationships and ADV victimization. It was hypothesized that insecure attachment and parental modeling of unhealthy relationships would individually be associated with increased ADV victimization, and secure attachment would attenuate the predicted positive association between parental modeling of unhealthy relationships and ADV victimization. Participants were adolescents (N = 152, M age = 15.61 years, SD = 1.086, 74.3% girls), who completed a survey …
