Renewable eco-friendly options for crop protection are fundamental in achieving sustainable agriculture. Here, we demonstrate the use of a biodegradable lignocellulosic banana-paper matrix as a seed wrap for the protection of potato plants against potato cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis. Potato cyst nematodes are devastating quarantine pests of potato globally. In East Africa, G. rostochiensis has recently emerged as a serious threat to potato production. Wrapping seed potatoes within the lignocellulose banana-paper matrix substantially reduced G. rostochiensis field inoculum and increased potato yields by up to fivefold in Kenya, relative to farmer practice, whether or not impregnated with ultra-low doses …

Diversity’S Distractions Revisited: The Case Of Latinx In Higher Education, Rachel F. Moran May 2022

Diversity’S Distractions Revisited: The Case Of Latinx In Higher Education, Rachel F. Moran

Faculty Scholarship

As the United States Supreme Court considers the future of affirmative action in higher education, this Article reflects on a 2003 essay by Professor Derrick Bell, which provocatively argued that diversity is a distraction from other pressing problems of access to a bachelor’s degree. The Article evaluates his claims with a focus on Latinx students, a rapidly growing segment of the college-going population. Bell believed that diversity is a less compelling justification for the use of race in admissions than corrective justice is. As a result, he predicted persistent litigation over the constitutionality of affirmative action programs. That prediction certainly …

Qualified Immunity, Sovereign Immunity, And Systemic Reform, Katherine Mims Crocker May 2022

Qualified Immunity, Sovereign Immunity, And Systemic Reform, Katherine Mims Crocker

Faculty Scholarship

Qualified immunity has become a central target of the movement for police reform and racial justice since George Floyd’s murder. And rightly so. Qualified immunity, which shields government officials from damages for constitutional violations even in many egregious cases, should have no place in federal law. But in critical respects, qualified immunity has become too much a focus of the conversation about constitutional-enforcement reform. The recent reappraisal offers unique opportunities to explore deeper problems and seek deeper solutions.

This Article argues that the public and policymakers should reconsider other aspects of the constitutional-tort system—especially sovereign immunity and related protections for …

At Home In The Garden, Aviana Wells

All Theses

This series of photographs serves as an expression of my personal search and longing for a sense of at homeness in varied garden landscapes across the United States. My interest in photographing gardens is derived from personal history in family gardens and grew in my frequent visits to the South Carolina Botanical Garden. The Botanical Garden was central in my life during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was there that I found an interest in how a shared public space could offer us a place for privacy and reflection. My photographs bear witness to the spaces …

Analysis Of Low-Cost Color Sensor Device Performance As Compared To Standardized Spectrophotometers, Bethany Wheeler May 2022

Analysis Of Low-Cost Color Sensor Device Performance As Compared To Standardized Spectrophotometers, Bethany Wheeler

All Theses

This work presents the process of assessing and selecting a low-cost color sensor suitable for illustrating essential concepts within pre-established graphic communications curricula for virtual learning. The suitability of the device was determined based on its ability to evaluate concepts presented in the curriculum, such as the whiteness and opacity of the substrates, and the optical density, tone reproduction, color balance, hue error, grayness, and overprint trapping of inks.

The initial testing and data collected from the virtual classroom indicates statistically significant differences between the low-cost device and X-Rite eXact; however, the concept illustration was not impeded by the differences. …

Water Use And Nutrient Retention In Black And Red Mangroves In Southwest Florida, Haley Miller May 2022

Water Use And Nutrient Retention In Black And Red Mangroves In Southwest Florida, Haley Miller

All Theses

Eutrophication is a major threat to mangroves, exposing these ecosystems to an excess surge of nutrients from either natural or human-influenced events. In addition to causing water quality issues, this phenomenon could alter some ecosystem processes, including tree physiology. In order to understand how increased nutrients affect mangrove water use on a whole forest scale, we fertilized red (Rhizophora mangle L.) and black (Avicennia germinans [L.] L.) mangrove plots with inorganic forms of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Sap flow data were collected over two growing seasons and one winter dry season and used to model outer sapwood …

All Theses

Microgreens are the young, edible seedlings of various vegetables, spices, herbs, and considered as the intermediate stage of sprouts and mature greens, suggesting microgreens may share similar food safety risks with both of these produce. Even though there are no known outbreaks due to contaminated microgreens, multiple product recalls have been reported, indicating food safety risks associated with microgreens should not be underemphasized. A recent national survey of the U.S. microgreens industry reported that almost half of growers (48.3% of 176) learned to grow microgreens by viewing websites and videos on the internet.1 However, it is unknown whether the …

Characterization Of A Potential Glucose Transporter In Trypanosoma Brucei, Matthew Morgan May 2022

Characterization Of A Potential Glucose Transporter In Trypanosoma Brucei, Matthew Morgan

All Theses

Trypanosoma brucei, the African trypanosome, is an organism heavily dependent on glucose for ATP production during the infectious stage of its life cycle. Here, we have explored the role of an uncharacterized protein designated “novel glucose transporter” (NGT) as a potential glucose transporter. Sequence analyses suggests that NGT shares similarities (either at the primary sequence level or structurally) with Trypanosome Hexose Transporters 1 (TbTHT1), and human GLUT3, both of which are membrane sugar transporters. NGT was localized by fluorescence microscopy to subcellular structures consistent with lysosomes. Silencing NGT expression with RNA interference in parasites resulted in a growth defect …

Addressing The Performance Of Distance Relays In Presence Of Inverter Based Resources, Prabin Adhikari May 2022

Addressing The Performance Of Distance Relays In Presence Of Inverter Based Resources, Prabin Adhikari

All Theses

The transition towards clean energy initiatives to reduce global greenhouse emissions and the dependence on fossil fuels requires the interconnection of large-scale renewable energy power plants to high voltage transmission networks via inverters. These inverter interfaced power sources, popularly known as inverter-based resources (IBRs), pose several technical challenges to the existing distance protection infrastructures widely deployed in transmission systems.

Fault characteristics of IBRs are significantly different from those shown by synchronous generators (SGs). With IBRs taking a large share of generation, their increasing penetration at the transmission level causes incorrect operation of existing distance protection schemes designed for systems dominated …

Insect Antennae As Bioinspirational Superstrong Fiber-Based Microfluidics, Griffin J. Donley May 2022

Insect Antennae As Bioinspirational Superstrong Fiber-Based Microfluidics, Griffin J. Donley

All Theses

Nature is frequently turned to for inspiration for the creation of new materials. Insect antennae are hollow, blood-filled fibers with complex shape, and are cantilevered at the head. The antenna is muscle-free, but the insect can controllably flex, twist, and maneuver it laterally. To explain this behavior, a comparative study of structural and tensile properties of the antennae of Periplaneta americana (American cockroach), Manduca sexta (Carolina hawkmoth), and Vanessa cardui (painted lady butterfly) was performed. These antennae demonstrate a range of distinguishable tensile properties, responding either as brittle fibers (Manduca sexta) or strain-adaptive fibers that stiffen when stretched (Vanessa cardui …

Effects Of Forest Management On Early-Successional Avian Species In The Southern Blue Ridge Ecoregion, Michael J. Adams May 2022

Effects Of Forest Management On Early-Successional Avian Species In The Southern Blue Ridge Ecoregion, Michael J. Adams

All Theses

Early-successional habitats are a critical habitat type for Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) and Golden-winged Warblers (Vermivora chrysoptera). In the Southern Blue Ridge Ecoregion, early-successional habitats have declined over the last 70 years, and the extent of which Ruffed Grouse and Golden-winged Warblers occupy these habitats at the edge of their ranges is unknown. Understanding the factors that drive the presence or absence of these species in this region is critical to inform quality management of early-successional forests. Additionally, increased knowledge of these species will likely benefit other species of conservation concern that rely on early-successional forests, …

Phosphorus Dynamics And Remediation Within Overwintering Floating Treatment Wetlands, Jack Dekle May 2022

Phosphorus Dynamics And Remediation Within Overwintering Floating Treatment Wetlands, Jack Dekle

All Theses

Excessive phosphorus (P) accumulation and internal P cycling processes within surface waters can contribute to eutrophication, which poses a risk to aquatic ecosystem health and clean water availability. The development of low-cost methods for removing P from water is imperative to reduce the environmental impacts of P pollution. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are a type of modified constructed wetland that can be installed within existing water containment infrastructure, where plants facilitate nutrient removal by direct contact with the water column. FTW plants demonstrate peak growth and nutrient uptake periods in the summer months, though some nutrients, notably P, can be …

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a type of acquired head trauma that results from an external force to the head. The development and severity of the secondary injury increases the risk of neurodegeneration and reduced cognitive recovery. Glucocorticoids are potent antiinflammatory therapeutics that have been investigated for potential treatment of TBIs, strokes, and other neuroinflammatory pathologies. However, their clinical application has been limited due to their ability to induce a variety of side effects, including adrenal suppression, edema, and reduced plasticity of the hippocampus. The use of a localized drug delivery system would overcome these systemic concerns. In previous studies, …

Enclosure In Flesh And Stone: Intermediaries And Access To God In Revelations Of Divine Love, Emily Danuser May 2022

Enclosure In Flesh And Stone: Intermediaries And Access To God In Revelations Of Divine Love, Emily Danuser

All Theses

In this thesis, I argue that in Revelations of Divine Love, Julian of Norwich uses the topic of enclosure (both in flesh and stone) as a means to delineate her arguments regarding the role of intermediaries and the way they can facilitate access to God while opening opportunities for dialogue within the broader public. Through a close-reading and historical contextualization of her writing on the topic of enclosure, I demonstrate that even some of Julian’s more controversial doctrinal claims can be reconciled if one understands the levels and role she assigned to intermediaries.
