La Mutación Del Pensamiento: Las Repercusiones Filosóficas Y Literarias De Friedrich Nietzsche En La Obra De Miguel De Unamuno., Raúl E. Garriga
La Mutación Del Pensamiento: Las Repercusiones Filosóficas Y Literarias De Friedrich Nietzsche En La Obra De Miguel De Unamuno., Raúl E. Garriga
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The first two chapters of the thesis contain a detailed study about the appropriations of two 19th century philosophical concepts that Miguel de Unamuno took from Nietzsche. The first chapter covers the idea of expulsion interna that the Basque philosopher attributes to Nietzsche and how that indication is systematized in a literary theory about writing that eventually will end up altering both of Unamuno’s essays and novels during this period. The second chapter also starts in the final years of the 19th century but is focused entirely on the dynamic concept of the “sobre-hombre” that Unamuno has used since 1896. …

Barriers To Mental Health Supports And Resources Experienced By Online Graduate Social Work Students, Joseph B. Camacho
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The focus of this qualitative exploratory study was to examine barriers online graduate social work (MSW) students encountered in obtaining mental health services. To obtain relevant data, the researcher interviewed online MSW students at a public university in southern California. This project employed bottom-up data analysis techniques by using open and axial coding to categorize and synthesize varied participant experiences. Relationships between axial codes were identified and analysis provided a window into the student experience for these online graduate social work students.
This study uncovered a phenomenon that this author calls the participants’ “student experience” as they pursue their online …

Comparing Composite Severe Weather Indices Of Thunderstorm Activity On Sea-Breeze And Non-Sea-Breeze Days In The Mobile, Alabama Area, Elizabeth Seiler
Honors Theses
Sea breezes (SB) occur frequently from May through October along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Coast. One reason why SBs interest forecasters is their ability to spawn summertime thunderstorms, which can cause flash flooding, lightning, and hail. However, forecasting the exact timing and location of SB-driven convection can be challenging. This thesis will focus on Mobile and Baldwin Counties in southwest Alabama, which experience two types of phenomena – SBs along the Gulf of Mexico Coast and bay breezes on either side of Mobile Bay. Over the past years, multiple undergraduate students have analyzed Mobile, Alabama radar imagery of past …
Creating, Destroying And Preserving Coherence With Quantum Channels, Masaya Takahashi
Creating, Destroying And Preserving Coherence With Quantum Channels, Masaya Takahashi
Dissertations
Quantum coherence is a fundamental property of quantum systems that can be studied within the framework of a quantum resource theory. In chapter 2, we consider how much coherence can be either generated or destroyed on a bipartite system when the action is restricted to local unitary operations. For pure states, we find that the relative entropy of entanglement and the robustness of entanglement provide tight lower bounds on the amount of coherence that can be destroyed by local unitaries, as measured by the relative entropy and L1 measures of coherence, respectively. We then study the amount of bipartite pure …

Human NANOG expression resets stem cells to ground-state pluripotency. Here we identify the unique features of human NANOG that relate to its dose-sensitive function as a master transcription factor. NANOG is largely disordered, with a C-terminal prion-like domain that phase-transitions to gel-like condensates. Full-length NANOG readily forms higher-order oligomers at low nanomolar concentrations, orders of magnitude lower than typical amyloids. Using single-molecule Förster resonance energy transfer and fluorescence cross-correlation techniques, we show that NANOG oligomerization is essential for bridging DNA elements in vitro. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing and Hi-C 3.0 in cells, we validate that NANOG prion-like domain assembly is …

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Introduction: In the US today, there are approximately 6.5 million people age 65 or older living with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias. This number is expected to increase to 12.7 million by 2050. Dementia imposes debility and frailty upon those effected, which is progressive and often follows an unpredictable trajectory. This places significant burdens on their informal caregivers, negatively impacting financial security, emotional and physical health, and overall quality of life. Informal caregivers are a heterogeneous group of partners, spouses, adult children, family members and others. Purpose: This qualitative study explores the experiences, worries and concerns of informal caregivers of …

The Association Between Chronic Diseases And Cigarettes' Smoking In Maine 2013-2017, Ishmael Thadal
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Tobacco use and chronic disease have a well-established relationship. Tobacco has a direct causal link to cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and diabetes, among other chronic conditions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). The relationship between chronic diseases named in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and tobacco use calls for further analysis, but some studies have already defined the parameters of such relationships. In a recent meta-analysis, Rodrick et al. (2019) quantified the global prevalence of tobacco use in patients diagnosed with diabetes and found that 1 in 5 patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were …
Comparing Maine Maternal Health Characteristics To The Us Average, Laciann Gilblair
Comparing Maine Maternal Health Characteristics To The Us Average, Laciann Gilblair
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Maternal health characteristics are commonly discussed topics in communities. Although some may not know exactly how in-depth data is collected on women that give birth, these characteristics are still discussed in education, healthcare, socially, and in the media. With each state collecting their own data on these characteristics, a large portion are depicted collectively, as a ‘national average’. One of the most common characteristics is mortality of both the mother and the infant. This Capstone project will dive deeper into maternal characteristics and highlighting specific data to broaden the scope of commonly discussed maternal health characteristics. It will also dive …

The Unity Of Normanitas: Norman Identity In Twelfth-Century Scotland And Southern Italy, Zachariah J. Chamberlin
The Unity Of Normanitas: Norman Identity In Twelfth-Century Scotland And Southern Italy, Zachariah J. Chamberlin
All Theses
Scholars have rigorously debated the extent to which the Normans remained a definitively identifiable group as they branched out from Normandy in endeavors of conquest and expansion. In the twentieth century, historians such as Charles Homer Haskins and David Douglas maintained the unity of Norman identity throughout the British Isles, southern Italy, and the crusader states. Other scholars like R. H. C. Davis argued that the Normans were merely extraordinary cultural assimilators and decried the notion of Norman unity, or Normanitas, as a myth propagated by chroniclers and historians dating back to the tenth century. Drawing upon recent scholarship, …
Age-Specific Effects Of An Early Grade Literacy Intervention In Asia And Africa, Doris Suzuki Esmerio
Age-Specific Effects Of An Early Grade Literacy Intervention In Asia And Africa, Doris Suzuki Esmerio
All Theses
Education has been widely recognized in the economic literature as a fundamental element in the economic development of nations and individuals. In this study, I focus on literacy acquisition for young children in poor communities in South Asia and Sub- saharan Africa. Literature on cognitive skill formation, neurobiology and psychology have found converging evidence that returns to investments in education differ by age. This is explained by the fact that neural circuits are more receptive to environmental influences at sensitive periods of brain development. Using data from a RCT experiment conducted between 2012-2016 in Bangladesh, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eswatini, Ghana, India, …
Identification Of Cytospora Species Isolated From Canker In Peach Trees In South Carolina, Stephen T. Baker
Identification Of Cytospora Species Isolated From Canker In Peach Trees In South Carolina, Stephen T. Baker
All Theses
In 2016, a survey was conducted into the causes of twig blight on peach (Prunus persica) in five orchards across South Carolina. From this survey, isolates from the fungal genus of Cytospora (Sordariomycetes, Diaporthales) were reported on peach, for the first time, within the state. Cytospora species are known to cause oozing cankers on a wide range of woody hosts leading to dieback, loss of limbs, and reduction in yield, prompting concern for important economic crops. Past methods of identification of Cytospora species have been confounded by indistinguishable morphology, overlapping host preference among species, and genetic sequencing …

Habitat Selection And Breeding Ecology Of Bachman’S Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis) In A Wiregrass-Free Ecosystem, Mikayla Thistle
All Theses
Through much of its range, Bachman’s Sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis) uses the wiregrass (Aristida spp.) dominant understory typical of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) forest. The central South Carolina Coastal Plain, however, lies within the “wiregrass gap” where longleaf pine understories are absent of wiregrass and instead are dominated by bluestem grasses (Schizachyrium spp. and Andropogon spp.), bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum), and shrubs. Habitat use of Bachman’s Sparrow in this region has yet to be studied and declining Bachman’s Sparrow populations necessitate a better understanding of habitat selection processes and population dynamics …

Wild pigs (Sus scrofa), which are invasive in much of the world, can alter ecosystems and compete with native species through interference competition and resource exploitation. We assessed the potential for interspecific interactions between invasive wild pigs and other wildlife in the Piedmont region of South Carolina by examining their spatiotemporal overlap in a correlational field study and an experimental field study. Our correlational study used data from wildlife cameras in seasonal occupancy, N-mixture, and temporal overlap analyses. Both deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and coyote (Canis latrans) site use were negatively associated with wild pig …
A Survey Of Indicators Of Zionism, Antisemitism, And Their Convergence With American Christian Nationalism, Jessica Liberman
A Survey Of Indicators Of Zionism, Antisemitism, And Their Convergence With American Christian Nationalism, Jessica Liberman
All Theses
Since the 1970s, the American Christian right has favored U.S. involvement with the state of Israel, supporting it through decades of conflict with its Muslim-majority neighbor, Palestine. Antisemitism in the United States has surged since the 2016 election of Donald Trump, along with growing research interest among sociologists in a theopolitical phenomenon called Christian nationalism. Building upon research documenting the civic, racial, and ethnic exclusivism of Christian nationalist ideology as well as theory suggesting Christian Zionism, despite appearing philosemitic, is structured by antisemitism that views Israel and Jews as artifacts of biblical prophecies, I theorize that such factors are associated …

The Consent Of The Governed: Constitutionalism Of The Levellers And Its Influence On Anglo-American Political Discourse, Nathan B. Gilson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
More fully understanding the Levellers suggests a new framework for understanding Anglo-American constitutionalism and jurisprudence. There was a logical progression in their constitutional thought, by which the exigent developments of the 1640s conflict continually pushed the Levellers to articulate new constitutional propositions. It eventually led them to a fully developed contractual theory for the origins of society based on the continuing consent of the People, including the rights to revolution and resistance, within a natural rights framework. The Levellers argued for limitations on the sovereignty of the government by the People, as opposed to the position of the Monarchists, Independents, …
