Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

This paper analyzes data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series to examine trends in educational attainment from 2000 to 2018 in six Texas gateway cities: El Paso, San Antonio, McAllen, Dallas Fort Worth, Houston, and Austin. Multilevel analyses explore three variables: generational cohort, citizenship status, and English proficiency and how they relate to years of education. Results demonstrate an overall increase in education, placing the 1.75 generation at the top of attainment along with the 2nd generation, and sometimes surpassing the latter in almost every gateway, while the 1.25 generation is achieving the lowest levels. Results also show that …

The Frames And Tactics Of The Women's Representation Movement, Desiree Alvarez May 2022

The Frames And Tactics Of The Women's Representation Movement, Desiree Alvarez

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Studies of social movements have yet to examine the modern women’s political representation movement, a social movement industry made up of nonprofit organizations, foundations, activist groups, and political action committees aiming to create gender parity within U.S. political systems. Using in-depth interviews with fifteen leaders of organizations within the women’s representation movement, this study reveals multi-faceted dynamics at play when tactics and frames are developed within organizations of this social movement industry. Findings reveal that frame and tactical development are influenced by several key factors, such as: cohort collaboration, funders, an established hierarchy of old versus new social movement organizations …

Sexual Consent: Conceptualizations, Practices, And Education Among Texas High School Students, Erica Joy Favor May 2022

Sexual Consent: Conceptualizations, Practices, And Education Among Texas High School Students, Erica Joy Favor

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

This study investigates high school students’ understanding of sexual consent and healthy relationships. While many studies have investigated practices, concepts, and definitions of consent among college-aged students, this research focuses on adolescents. How do teenagers define consent? With the rise of the #metoo movement, has awareness of consent and its practice changed? This qualitative study interviewed fifteen high school students in Texas, ranging in age from 15 to 18 years old. The results of this study are clear: high school students participate in hookup culture despite a lack of education and curriculum of consent practices. This research also sheds light …

The Evolution Of Neurosensory Structures: Evaluating Ecological Drivers Of Brain And Eye Size Variation, Kaitlyn J. Howell May 2022

The Evolution Of Neurosensory Structures: Evaluating Ecological Drivers Of Brain And Eye Size Variation, Kaitlyn J. Howell

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Neurosensory structures (i.e., brain and eye size) vary extensively across taxa. The evolution of large neurosensory structures has long been an area of interest for scientists, but focus has largely been placed on macroevolutionary patterns at or above the species level. Few studies have investigated the role contrasting ecological factors play in the evolution of such structures within species. My dissertation examines 1) how divergent ecological pressures, particularly predation and competition, drive evolutionary shifts in brain and eye size within species and across sexes, and 2) why such variation evolves, particularly if larger brains drive shifts in behavior and fitness. …

The Internet: Pornography’S Ally, People’S Nightmare, Katherine Peppiatt May 2022

The Internet: Pornography’S Ally, People’S Nightmare, Katherine Peppiatt

RhetTech

The Internet perpetuates the trauma of child pornography survivors. Every day, the Internet provides a space that continues the cycle of abuse for survivors. This essay explores how technological advancements have led to a skyrocketing number of survivors having to cope with the knowledge that individuals − strangers − exploit them every day. It addresses this issue from a legal perspective; by investigating previous court cases and current proposed legislation, it enforces a distinct need for stronger Internet regulations to prevent future generations of children from facing additional emotional turmoil when their abuse shared and distributed online.

To The Bone: Starving For Accuracy, Vivian Norris May 2022

To The Bone: Starving For Accuracy, Vivian Norris

RhetTech

Popular media depictions of eating disorders, such as the portrayal of anorexia nervosa in Netflix’s 2017 film To the Bone, reinforce harmful stereotypes and build a culture that glorifies and fetishizes eating disorders. This article presents a review of eating disorder-focused films and argues that these dramatizations have created a false, sensationalized model of eating disorders that prevents access to proper diagnosis and care. To the Bone promised a raw, honest depiction of anorexia, but its use of graphic images of emaciated bodies and its inaccurate representations of eating disorder treatment made it a source of misinformation and a ubiquitous …

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation With Deep Neural Networks, Jinyu Yang May 2022

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Deep neural networks (DNNs) demonstrate unprecedented achievements on various machine learning problems and applications. However, such impressive performance heavily relies on massive amounts of labeled data which requires considerable time and labor efforts to collect and annotate. To remedy this limitation, unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) has attracted more and more attention in the past decade, owing to its capability in transferring the knowledge learned from a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. UDA has proved its wide applicability in various vision tasks, for example, image classification and semantic segmentation. Despite its impressive success, the limitations of existing UDA …

The Pentest Method For Business Intelligence, P. Soma Reddy, Justin Pelletier May 2022

The Pentest Method For Business Intelligence, P. Soma Reddy, Justin Pelletier

Presentations and other scholarship

Information transactions and data retention comprise critical inputs to Business Intelligence processes. However, despite ongoing data-driven Business Intelligence process improvements, many companies only discover they are vulnerable to a cyber-attack after a breach materializes the risk. In this study, we propose that compliance regimes such as the global Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS), the federal Gramm-Leach Bliley Act (GLBA), and the regional 23-NYCRR-500 standard provide externally-imposed risk discovery opportunities that should be part of managerial decision-making. This paper describes the penetration test (pentest) method relative to those regulatory regimes. We then consider the potential for the pentest method …

Learning Causal Bounds Using Marginal Independence Information With Applications To Gene Expression Analysis, Borzou Alipourfard May 2022

Learning Causal Bounds Using Marginal Independence Information With Applications To Gene Expression Analysis, Borzou Alipourfard

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

ABSTRACT: Discovering causal relations is a fundamental goal of science. Randomized controlled experiments were often considered to be the only reliable method for tackling this task. However, in recent years, various causal discovery methods have been proposed that are capable of identifying causal relations from purely observational data. While these causal discovery methods provide a theoretical framework for bridging the gap from statistical relations to causal conclusions, causal discovery remains a challenging task in practice; this challenge arises because many of the assumptions made in obtaining these theoretical results are often not met in practice. This is especially true when …

Arcila, Anthony N. Snow, Yassmine M N Akkari, Devon Chabot-Richards, Preeti Pancholi, Laura J. Tafe

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Developments in genomics are profoundly influencing medical practice. With increasing use of genetic and genomic testing across every aspect of the health care continuum, patients and their families are increasingly turning to primary care physicians (PCPs) for discussion and advice regarding tests, implications, and results. Yet, with the rapid growth of information, technology, and applications, PCPs are finding it challenging to fill the gaps in knowledge and support the growing needs of their patients. A critical component in expanding PCP genomic literacy lies in the education of physicians in training and in practice. Although a framework for developing physician competencies …

Planning For Debt: An Analysis Of Drivers Of Financial Knowledge On Individual Debt Strategy, Nicholas A. Hughes May 2022

Planning For Debt: An Analysis Of Drivers Of Financial Knowledge On Individual Debt Strategy, Nicholas A. Hughes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study aims to provide insight into the relationships between proven significant drivers of financial knowledge (numeracy, cognitive ability, mathematics anxiety, and financial literacy) and an individual's premeditated strategy to tackle their student loans. From a sample of 160 undergraduate students, we find few significant results that affirm the hypotheses of the study. However, we also determine that several descriptive factors (i.e., general mathematical skill, anticipated level of debt and interest to be repaid, etc.) vary by an extremely wide margin, suggesting that students lack the very skills necessary to calculate and deal with their own loans. Additionally, we find …
