Emotional And Attentional Regulation: Impact Of Trauma And Journal Writing?, Jody Ann Coore
The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal
Traumatic experiences are very common and have a high lifetime prevalence rate, which a large body of research indicates negatively impact the ability to self-regulate, including emotional and attentional regulation. This study focused on traumatic experiences caused by peer victimization and aimed to examine the effects on self-regulation after exposure to artificial trauma and journaling in graduate students. A convenient sample of 9 graduate students were randomly assigned to the control or intervention group. All participants were asked to engage in a journaling activity after watching the assigned video. Three emotional Stroop tasks were administered to participants: before watching the …
The Federal Elections Bill And The End Of Reconstruction In 1890, Elisa Hink
The Federal Elections Bill And The End Of Reconstruction In 1890, Elisa Hink
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
The Reconstruction Era within U.S. History is (generally) defined as commencing in 1865 and ending in 1877; however, the social, cultural, and political impact of this time in the nation’s history suggests that its ending is less tidy. Those who worked both for and against the progressive goals of Reconstruction continued their efforts beyond 1877. The Federal Elections Bill of 1890 was written with intent by the remaining Reconstruction Republicans to provide federal oversight to elections, which had become a primary target of Democrats in the former Confederate states as they regained their power. Efforts within these states to prevent …

Managing Humidity In Electronics Using Water Vapor-Selective Membranes, Songhao Wu, Andrew J. Fix, Allison Mou, David M. Warsinger, James Braun
Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship
Abstract: As outdoor electronics have become prevalent in every aspect of daily life, handling humidity in them is an emerging issue for reliable devices. As water vapor enters the electronics enclosure, there is a risk of condensation, which could prevent the electronics from functioning and further damage the device. Traditionally, the humidity removal for electronics is usually done by heating the air within the enclosure, which can be energy-intensive and less efficient. Vapor selective membrane systems are promising alternatives for air heating dehumidification as they do not require heating energy for water vapor removal. It allows water vapor transport through …

Architecture As Stress Relief: What Makes A Meditative Space?, Angela Brown
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Stress is a prevalent issue today. People can become stressed or overstimulated for various reasons, whether it be due to their physical environment, their physiological nature, psychological factors, or a combination. Although the causes of stress for our prehistoric ancestors were mostly periodic events such as predators or weather, modern-day stressors are often persistent and environmental, leading to chronic stress. Also, in today’s world of constant new information and stimulation, especially in urban locations, sensory overload is common. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic and its mental effects have brought new attention to the interaction between physical environment and well-being. The prevalence …

Spaces Of The Tragic: Modern Dramatic Tragedy And Contemporary Memorial Design, Shiloh Bemis
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
Humans use narrative to understand the world around us. At early ages we are exposed to storytelling with variable intent, from cautionary tales to the inspirational and everything in between. The dialectic strength of narrative mediums is well-known and well-studied. Theatre is one of the world’s oldest enduring forms of storytelling and has a strong ability to reflect and adapt with cultures as they develop, as a means of commentary and cultural reflection.
Architecture shares theatre’s ancient roots and has always been an important method of communication and expression. However, its tactics have historically been less narrative-centric than theatre and …

How The Notch Signaling Pathway And Mediator Work Together To Regulate Hasc Self-Renewal, Taylor Teach
Master's Theses
Obesity is a serious medical condition resulting from excess body fat that triggers changes in both quantity and quality of various cells that reside in adipose tissue, including adipose stem cells. Adipose derived stem cells are multipotent, self-renewing cells that have the ability to differentiate. This process can be controlled by environmental stimuli, transcription factors, and signal cascades that lead to gene transcription and protein expression specific to the cell’s fate. The Mediator complex and the Notch signaling pathway are two complexes that allow this to occur. There is still much unknown about the Mediator complex, the Notch signaling pathways, …

Code Review Practices For Refactoring Changes: An Empirical Study On Openstack, Mohamed Wiem Mkaouer, Eman Abdullah Alomar, Moatz Chouchen, Ali Ouni
Articles
Modern code review is a widely used technique employed in both industrial and open-source projects to improve software quality, share knowledge, and ensure adherence to coding standards and guidelines. During code review, developers may discuss refactoring activities before merging code changes in the code base. To date, code review has been extensively studied to explore its general challenges, best practices and outcomes, and socio-technical aspects. However, little is known about how refactoring is being reviewed and what developers care about when they review refactored code. Hence, in this work, we present a quantitative and qualitative study to understand what are …

The Health In Mental Health: Exploring Individualized Holistic Health Practices As A Process To Transform Mental Health, Craig Craig Keaton
The Health In Mental Health: Exploring Individualized Holistic Health Practices As A Process To Transform Mental Health, Craig Craig Keaton
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Mental health problems are on the rise, especially among college students. Problematically, the two most common approaches - pharmacotherapy and talk therapy - are either grounded in a limited and suspect evidence base or is not an approach that reaches most people in need of and wanting mental health support. There is, however, a growing body of evidence supporting a health-based approach to mental health, including the application of nature, exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle. As well, with an expansive definition of health, there are even more practices, such as art, writing, and social connection to support better health and mental …

Spaced Retrieval Improves Retention And Transfer Of Foreign Vocabulary, Durna Alakbarova
Psychology Theses - Archive
One strategy that has been shown to promote long-term retention is spaced retrieval practice. In this study, we used standard and dropout procedures of spaced retrieval training to examine whether they produce superior retention and transfer relative to repeated restudy in novel vocabulary learning. Across three sessions spaced two days apart, participants learned 30 Swahili words with their English definitions via spaced testing or by restudying. Definitions were the same (fixed) across days in Experiment 1 and different each day (variable) in Experiment 2. A week later, all participants were tested using either the same (repetition) or new (transfer) definitions …
Quantized Enveloping Superalgebra Of Type P, Saber Murad Ahmed
Quantized Enveloping Superalgebra Of Type P, Saber Murad Ahmed
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
We introduce a new quantized enveloping superalgebra $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$ attached to the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{p}_n$ of type P. The superalgebra $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$ is a quantization of a Lie bisuperalgebra structure on $\mathfrak{p}_n$ and we study some of its basic properties. We determine representations of the superalgebra $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$ and derive its Drinfeld-Jimbo relations. We prove the triangular decomposition of $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$ and introduce some preliminary results concerning the highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$. We also introduce the periplectic q-Brauer algebra and prove that it is the centralizer of the $\mathfrak{U}_q\mathfrak{p}_n$-module structure on $\mathbb{C}(n|n)^{\otimes \ell}$. Finally, we propose a definition for a new periplectic q-Schur …
