Evidence That The Transcriptional Repressor Icer Is Regulated Via The N-End Rule For Ubiquitination, Angelo Cirinelli, Justin Wheelan, Christopher Grieg, Carlos A. Molina May 2022

Evidence That The Transcriptional Repressor Icer Is Regulated Via The N-End Rule For Ubiquitination, Angelo Cirinelli, Justin Wheelan, Christopher Grieg, Carlos A. Molina

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

ICER is a transcriptional repressor that is mono- or poly-ubiquitinated. This either causes ICER to be translocated from the nucleus, or degraded via the proteasome, respectively. In order to further studies the proteins involved in ICER regulation mass spectrometry analysis was performed to identify potential candidates. We identified twenty eight ICER-interacting proteins in human melanoma cells, Sk-Mel-24. In this study we focus on two proteins with potential roles in ICER proteasomal degradation in response to the N-end rule for ubiquitination: the N-alpha-acetyltransferase 15 (NAA15) and the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase UBR4. Using an HA-tag on the N- or C-terminus of ICER …

Invited Perspective: Eliminating Toxics To Prevent Disease: Asbestos Leads The Way, David Kriebel, Douglas J. Myers

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Countries that have consumed more asbestos have historically had higher mortality rates from asbestos-related diseases (ARDs) than countries with lower asbestos consumption. A research letter in this issue by Rath et al. provides a 15-y update on evidence for this link and uses this evidence to support calls for a worldwide ban on the use of asbestos. We find their results convincing, and we agree with the urgent need to stop producing and using asbestos. For those who might be skeptical of this conclusion or who are considering how much weight to give this evidence, we offer this perspective as …

Navigating The Cold And Flu Aisle: An Evidence-Based Approach For Nurse Practitioners, Elizabeth Edwards May 2022

Navigating The Cold And Flu Aisle: An Evidence-Based Approach For Nurse Practitioners, Elizabeth Edwards

Student Works

Background: The most common illness know is the common cold. Antibiotics are inappropriate for treating the common cold, but there are many over-the-counter medications available. These over-the-counter medications have not been shown to decrease the length of a cold, though they can ease symptoms. In this paper, we aimed to review the active ingredients in recommended OTC cold remedies for the general population and assess the evidence for their effectiveness. We hope this information will provide NPs with evidence-based strategies to help their patients be better prepared to navigate the cold and flu aisle.

Florida Field Naturalist

Mosquito Lagoon, the northernmost portion of the Indian River Lagoon along the eastern coast of Florida, is home to a variety of both resident and migratory bird species, including over a dozen categorized as either threatened or endangered in the state of Florida. Though birds have previously been monitored in parts of the central and southern Indian River Lagoon system, there has been little research on birds in Mosquito Lagoon. In this study, we used 2 years of survey data to evaluate the abundance and diversity of the avian community in Mosquito Lagoon. We made 22,085 bird observations, including 67 …

Unsupervised Anomaly Detection Via Dual Transformation-Aware Embeddings, Zhipeng Wang, Chunping Hou, Bangbang Ge, Yang Liu, Zhicheng Dong, Zhiqiang Wu

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Unsupervised anomaly detection refers to the discovery of unconventional images that are globally or locally different from the training set. Recently, reconstruction-based anomaly detection methods have made great progress. However, most of the existing methods take reconstructing the original image as the goal of latent feature learning. Due to lack of effective semantic guidance, latent features have intrinsic characteristics which retain redundant details of spatial structure. Such information is too general and cause over-expression problem. To solve this problem, in this paper, dual transformation-aware embeddings are coined which aims to achieve a stable model to learn high-level latent features in …

Beyond "Restoration Of Honor": Compensating Veterans For The Psychological Injuries Of The Gay And Transgender Bans, Evan R. Seamone

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article is titled “Beyond Restoration of Honor” specifically to introduce the policy priority of ensuring that all Sexual and Gender Identity Minority (SGIM) veterans who were harmed by...discriminatory policies [like Don't Ask, Don't Tell] can obtain and use Veterans Affairs (VA) disability benefits for injuries resulting from discrimination while in the military. While this Article highlights the value of codifying a series of specific SGIM stressor markers for PTSD in the VA’s regulations concerning personal assault and creating presumptions of service-connection for specific military experiences, existing laws and regulations permit service-connection for these injuries without further regulatory changes.

The Typical Toddler: Diet And Approaches To Picky Eating, Carissa Adams May 2022

The Typical Toddler: Diet And Approaches To Picky Eating, Carissa Adams

Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations

To address the contested definition of picky eating, a study was conducted to determine the typical toddler diet, therefore identifying when intervention may be warranted, and further defining picky eating. Out of the 252 responses to a cross-sectional survey, 34.9% of caregivers reported their child was a picky eater, whereas 65.1% were identified as non-picky eaters. The diets and quantity of foods consumed by these groups varied significantly. Picky eaters were less likely to eat foods of potentially polarizing sensory properties or textures that required advanced oral motor skills to consume. Children who were picky eaters consumed only 32 different …

Investigating The Impact Of Parkinson’S Disease On Iadl Performance, Emphasizing The Need For Earlier Diagnosis And The Value Of Timelier Occupational Therapy Intervention, Brittney N. Moser

Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations

Parkinson’s disease (PD) can cause motor and non-motor difficulties which significantly decrease one’s independence and quality of life. Research has shown the earlier these individuals are diagnosed and subsequently referred for more timely therapeutic intervention, the better their health outcomes. This capstone was designed to develop advanced clinical understanding of the deficits in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) performance early on in disease progression and the role of occupational therapy in PD care. Further, it was designed for program development to specifically address the need for increased care for those with PD in rural communities. Four weeks of the …

Promoting Occupational Therapy Involvement In End-Of-Life Care Through Advocacy And Education, Macey Genzlinger

Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations

The end of life is a difficult stage of life to manage, but people who are dying still desire to participate in meaningful occupations. This participation can be negatively affected by the challenges faced at the end of life. Occupational therapy is a profession perfectly fitted to facilitate occupational participation for patients at the end of their lives. However, occupational therapy is underutilized in end-of-life care, and many knowledge gaps exist surrounding its use. Much work needs to be done to solve these problems which this Capstone project begins to address. The theoretical framework underlying this project is the Occupational …

Why And When Do Leaders Express Humility? Leader Expressed Humility As Psycho-Social Signaling, Kelly G. Manix May 2022

Why And When Do Leaders Express Humility? Leader Expressed Humility As Psycho-Social Signaling, Kelly G. Manix

American Business Review

Humble leadership has generated immense research interest. Yet, little is understood regarding why or when leaders may choose to express humility to their followers. Drawing upon self-determination and signaling theories, this conceptual research seeks to explain why some leaders display humble behaviors toward their followers more than other leaders. Needs for relatedness and competence are proposed as antecedents of humble expressions. Leader optimism is proposed as a moderator of this relationship. I contend leaders sustain expressions of humility to signal their values of relatedness and growth to followers and to encourage humble behaviors among them for mutually beneficial outcomes. Optimism …

Inadequate Healthcare, Inadequate Recovery: Exploring The Challenges Of Compensating Pregnant Inmates Deprived Of Adequate Healthcare At State Prisons, Katherine Mckeon May 2022

Inadequate Healthcare, Inadequate Recovery: Exploring The Challenges Of Compensating Pregnant Inmates Deprived Of Adequate Healthcare At State Prisons, Katherine Mckeon

Connecticut Law Review

Prenatal healthcare services available to pregnant inmates in state prisons are wholly inadequate. Despite the glaring shortcomings of state prisons’ healthcare services, there has still only been limited attention paid to rectifying the problem. This lack of attention is problematic for many reasons, but especially because the number of women in prisons has increased in recent decades and inmates who are pregnant when they arrive to prison face conditions that risk extreme health condition.

Not only are pregnant inmates subjected to inadequate healthcare services, but they also have very few legal remedies available to them when they have been deprived …

Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation: A Window Into The Reproductive Justice Concerns Underlying Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Caitlyn Pesavento May 2022

Ovarian Tissue Cryopreservation: A Window Into The Reproductive Justice Concerns Underlying Assisted Reproductive Technologies, Caitlyn Pesavento

Connecticut Law Review

More regulatory framework is needed for assisted reproductive technologies. Taken together, the high costs of fertility treatment, lack of widespread insurance coverage, and social perceptions of motherhood make it nearly impossible for women from traditionally marginalized backgrounds to collectively overcome barriers of access to fertility treatments. Viewing the ovarian tissue cryopreservation procedure through a reproductive justice framework illustrates an inherent dichotomy between increasing availability and increasing access to assisted reproductive technologies. This Comment explores the current regulation—or lack thereof—of assisted reproductive technologies; advocates for the regulation of ovarian tissue cryopreservation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; scrutinizes the failings …

Identifying Noisy Labels In The Ground Truth Of Eating Episodes Self-Reported By Button Press On A Wrist-Worn Device, Tianyi Zhang May 2022

Identifying Noisy Labels In The Ground Truth Of Eating Episodes Self-Reported By Button Press On A Wrist-Worn Device, Tianyi Zhang

All Theses

This thesis considers the problem of identifying noisy labels in the ground truth of eating episodes (meals, snacks) as self-reported by participants collecting data in the wild. Participants wore a smartwatch-like device that tracked their wrist motion all day. They were instructed to press a button on the device at the start and end of each eating episode. The device and instructions were designed to be as simple to use as possible, but post-review of the ground truth provided by participants revealed a strong likelihood that a significant portion of the button presses may contain errors. For example, an error …

Effects Of Caffeine Doses On Rumen Fluid Fermentation Profile And Nutrient Digestibility When Fed Lactating Cow Diet On Continuous Cultures Fermentation, Monica Toledo-Villafane

All Theses

Caffeine is commonly known as a potent bioactive compound. This molecule plays an essential role in plants' defense. Because of its antimicrobial activity, caffeine has been cataloged as a toxic component for microbes by targeting DNA repair mechanisms and suppressing microbial proliferation. Nowadays, the caffeine action to enhance mixed microbial cultures digestion has captured the attention of researchers.

In ruminants, the inhibition of ruminal methanogenesis has been deeply studied to enhance rumen fermentation to increment metabolizable energy. In dairy cows, methane production represents a loss of 6.0 ± 1.18% of the energy intake (Niu et al., 2018), reducing the metabolizable …
