Mounting evidence is revealing an increasing complexity of gene regulation at the level of messenger RNA (mRNA) translation. Within mammalian cells, canonical cap-dependent mRNA translation depends on the eIF4F complex, consisting of the m7G mRNA cap-binding protein eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), the helicase eIF4A (eIF4A), and the eIF4G (eIF4G1) scaffolding protein. eIF4G1 additionally binds poly(A) binding protein (PABPC1) to facilitate mRNA circularization and nucleates pre-translation initiation complex assembly to initiate ribosomal scanning. In breast epithelial cells, the CELF1 RNA-binding protein specifically promotes the translation of select epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) effector mRNAs by binding GU-rich elements (GREs) within their 3' …

Central nervous system (CNS)-hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) can mimic other neuroinflammatory disorders (ONID), often leading to misdiagnosis. Current diagnostic studies do not reliably distinguish CNS-HLH from ONID. We hypothesized that novel cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers identified using unbiased proteomic analysis can facilitate diagnosis of CNS-HLH from ONID. Banked CSF samples were categorized into 3 groups, CNS-HLH, ONID, and controls without CNS inflammation. Proteomic analysis was performed on 25 samples per group (total N = 75). Proteins demonstrating significant changes (>1.5-fold higher and P< .05) in the CNS-HLH compared with ONID and associated with HLH pathophysiology were selected as candidate biomarkers. Cross-platform validation of candidate biomarkers, along with known biomarkers CXCL9 and osteopontin, was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). One hundred twenty-two proteins were identified on CSF proteomic analysis at 99% confidence. Of these, 10 proteins demonstrated a >1.5-fold change with a P< .05 in CNS-HLH compared with ONID. SerpinG1, lysozyme, and CD14 were selected as candidate biomarkers. ELISA confirmed significant elevation of all 5 biomarkers in CNS-HLH relative to ONID. Median SerpinG1 levels were1242.9 ng/mL in CNS-HLH vs 292.2 ng/mL in ONID (P ≤ .001), lysozyme 222.2 ng/mL vs 65.6 ng/mL (P = .001), and CD14 180.3 ng/mL vs 64.5 ng/mL (P ≤ .001). Median CXCL9 levels were 223.7 ng/mL in CNS-HLH vs 15.5 ng/mL in ONID (P ≤ .001), and osteopontin levels were 356.5 ng/mL vs 92.9 ng/mL (P = .001). These findings demonstrate that novel CSF biomarkers SerpinG1, lysozyme, CD14, and CXCL9 can facilitate diagnosis of CNS-HLH from ONID.

Staff Education To Reduce Compassion Fatigue In Acute Care Staff Nurses, Kamala C. Mcgee Feb 2026

Staff Education To Reduce Compassion Fatigue In Acute Care Staff Nurses, Kamala C. Mcgee

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Compassion fatigue (CF), burnout, and moral distress are common in high-acuity nursing environments, yet nurses are rarely taught how to recognize or manage these challenges. The guiding question for this staff education project was about whether education focused on CF and mindfulness-based coping strategies would improve nurses’ knowledge and attitudes in an acute care VA medical center. Posteducation results (n = 20) showed meaningful, statistically significant improvements. Familiarity with CF increased from baseline (M = 2.35; SD = 1.04) to post implementation (M = 3.75; SD = .91), t(19) = −5.085, p < .001. Confidence in recognizing CF in oneself improved from baseline (M = 2.6; SD = .875) to post implementation (M = 3.60; SD = .821), p = .004. Confidence in recognizing CF in colleagues increased from baseline (M = 2.40; SD = .821) to postimplementation (M = 3.15; SD = .671), p = .012. Agreement that seeking help is a sign of weakness decreased from baseline (M = 2.00; SD = .503) to postimplementation (M = 1.40; SD = .951), p = .024. Although perceptions of organizational support did not change, nurses reported greater use of mindfulness, peer support, and boundary setting, supporting nurse wellbeing and psychological safety. Several recommendations emerge from this project. CF education should be integrated into routine staff development, annual competencies, and onboarding for new nurses. By reducing stigma around seeking help and promoting peer awareness, this work supports fostering a workplace culture where all nurses feel safe, supported, and valued, a positive social change.

Despite the promise of fuel cells as sustainable energy conversion technologies, their widespread adoption is hindered by the high cost of platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts, particularly for catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. Here, we report copper-based single-atom catalysts (Cu-SACs) as cost-effective non-PGM alternatives for ORR. The catalysts were synthesized via simple pyrolysis of pyrene-derived amine-terminated graphene quantum dots (GQDs) in the presence of nitrogen and metal precursors. The abundant nitrogen functionality in GQDs effectively stabilized isolated Cu atoms during their conversion to porous carbon. A subsequent acid-washing step yielded a high density of atomically dispersed …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Accurate identification of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-related cellular characteristics from microscopy images is essential for understanding neurodegenerative mechanisms at the cellular level. While most computational approaches focus on macroscopic neuroimaging modalities, cell type classification from microscopy remains relatively underexplored. In this study, we propose a hybrid vision transformer–convolutional neural network (ViT–CNN) framework that integrates DeiT-Small and EfficientNet-B7 to classify three AD-related cell types—astrocytes, cortical neurons, and SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells—from phase-contrast microscopy images. We perform a comparative evaluation against conventional CNN architectures (DenseNet, ResNet, InceptionNet, and MobileNet) and prompt-based multimodal vision–language models (GPT-5, GPT-4o, and Gemini 2.5-Flash) using zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought …

Objectives: Examination of the success of nurse preceptors is moving toward the need for co-creation between nurse leaders and nurses in the role of nurse preceptors. The current nursing workforce has five generations in the cohort of healthcare workers: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials (Generation Y), and Generation Z (Bacon, 2023). Each group may have different characteristics and traits; supporting them can be challenging. As noted, the demographics of the workforce have changed. Therefore, Nurse Leaders (NL) must demonstrate inclusive leadership behaviors that result in practice environments where all individuals, diverse in their ages, experiences, and education, …

Organizational Trust And Burnout Among Registered Nurses And Patient Care Aides: A Qualitative Study, Katherine C. Brewer, Andrew Dierkes, Allison A. Norful Feb 2026

Organizational Trust And Burnout Among Registered Nurses And Patient Care Aides: A Qualitative Study, Katherine C. Brewer, Andrew Dierkes, Allison A. Norful

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Healthcare worker wellbeing has emerged as a pivotal topic in workforce research. Organizational factors may impact well-being as much as individual and personal factors. One organizational determinant of well-being includes institutional trust; specifically, how the relationship between clinician and employer influences well-being (e.g., burnout). Institutional trust is an important factor in human caring professions, due to the moral and emotional nature of the work and the expectation for safety and provision among clinicians by employers. Existing clinician well-being research rarely studies institutional trust among registered nurses (RNs) and patient care aides (PCAs), despite their important frontline role in patient …

Accurate monitoring of Chlorophyll-a (Chla) is critical for assessing aquatic ecosystem health, yet ecological complexity often leads to ambiguous spectral signatures in satellite data. Traditional deterministic models assume a one-to-one mapping between spectra and pigments, often failing to capture these high-dimensional analytical challenges. In this study, we propose a novel deep learning architecture, the Channel Attention-Mixture Density Network (CA-MDN), to retrieve Chla from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) hyperspectral mission. The CA-MDN integrates an attention mechanism to dynamically select ecologically relevant spectral bands and employs a probabilistic output layer to quantify …

Anomalous Spontaneous Induction Of Magnetic And Electric Fields In Dense Quark Matter, Efrain J. Ferrer, Jose Miguel Perez-Fernandez

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

In this paper, we will demonstrate that a dense quark-matter system in the dual chiral density wave (DCDW) phase behaves as a ferromagnet in the sense that its magnetic-field dependent magnetization remains different from zero even at 𝐵 →0. The corresponding permanent magnetization is a function of the baryonic chemical potential 𝜇, decreasing up to zero as 𝜇 increases in the range of intermediate densities (312  MeV⩽𝜇⩽342  MeV) and then increasing from zero in the higher density interval 490  MeV⩽𝜇⩽550  MeV. We will show that this system’s ability to generate permanent magnetization, together with the existence of the axial anomaly, …

Prognostic risk categorization aids treatment selection for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Although the European LeukemiaNet (ELN) classifications (2017 and 2022) for AML have been used to stratify outcomes for patients receiving intensive chemotherapy, their application to patients receiving less intensive therapy, such as azacitidine plus venetoclax, has been less satisfactory. In response, a 4-gene classifier that stratifies older patients with AML unfit for intensive chemotherapy into those with higher benefit (wild type), intermediate benefit (FLT3-internal tandem duplication [ITD] or NRAS/KRAS mutation), or lower benefit (TP53 mutation) after azacitidine plus venetoclax treatment was developed. We hypothesized that this 4-gene …
