Social prescribing is an approach that aims to improve health and well-being. It connects individuals to non-clinical services and supports that address social needs, such as those related to loneliness, housing instability and mental health. At the person level, social prescribing can give individuals the knowledge, skills, motivation and confidence to manage their own health and well-being. At the society level, it can facilitate greater collaboration across health, social, and community sectors to promote integrated care and move beyond the traditional biomedical model of health. While the term social prescribing was first popularised in the UK, this practice has become …
Radical Belonging: School As Communion Of Peoples, Place, And Power, Joey Yung-Jun Liu
Radical Belonging: School As Communion Of Peoples, Place, And Power, Joey Yung-Jun Liu
Education (PhD) Dissertations
In wondering “How are decolonizing, place/land-based, and community-grown learning places created and sustained as alternatives to dominant settler-colonial systems, and what stories would they share about their creation and existence?”, I formed relationships with two alternative, autonomous, decolonizing schools through a teacher-guide at each school who served as guides for me to enter their spaces with invitation. In developing these relationships over 2-3 years and spending 2-3 weeks alongside each of them at their school sites, I was able to sustain natural and deep conversation with my teacher-guides, who then served as co-storyers of this research to collectively …

Microbiological Safety And Quality Of Raw, Ready-To-Eat (Rte) Seafood Sold In Orange County, California, Grace Marquis
Microbiological Safety And Quality Of Raw, Ready-To-Eat (Rte) Seafood Sold In Orange County, California, Grace Marquis
Food Science (MS) Theses
Raw, ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood can pose health threats due to the potential presence of foodborne pathogens. Listeria monocytogenes is a known microbiological hazard associated with raw, RTE seafood. Salmonella enterica has not traditionally been recognized as a hazard in seafood, but it is an emerging concern, with five outbreaks in seafood in the United States from 2011 to 2021. The presence of E. coli and total coliforms can indicate fecal or environmental contamination. The objective of this study was to evaluate the microbiological safety and quality of raw, RTE seafood sold in Orange County, CA. A total of 105 raw, …
Characterization Of Gangliosides And Fatty Acids In Extracellular Vesicles From Human Milk, Aliya Amin
Characterization Of Gangliosides And Fatty Acids In Extracellular Vesicles From Human Milk, Aliya Amin
Food Science (MS) Theses
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are bioactive components of human milk that may impact functionality to regulate growth, cognitive development, metabolism, and immunity in newborns. The biogenesis of EVs and the mechanism by which EVs elicit biologic effects in vivo have not been characterized entirely. Gangliosides and fatty acids are integral in the formation, release, stability, and functionalities of EVs. Presumably, EV function is related to EV composition and lipids in EVs influence the bioavailability of EV cargo and downstream functions of EVs. The objective of this research was to characterize the fatty acid and ganglioside composition of EVs in human milk. …
Lack Of Affirmative Consent: Trauma In Jhumpa Lahiri’S “Interpreter Of Maladies”, Ansalee Morrison
Lack Of Affirmative Consent: Trauma In Jhumpa Lahiri’S “Interpreter Of Maladies”, Ansalee Morrison
English (MA) Theses
Most scholars who have published analyses of the title story of Jhumpa Lahiri’s 1999 Pulitzer Prize-winning short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, read Mina Das’s character as a woman who chose to be unfaithful to her husband with a friend who once stayed in their home, resulting in the conception of her second son, Bobby. This general consensus is likely influenced by how Mr. Kapasi, the story’s narrator and the tour guide in whom Mina confides her story, concludes that the “pain” Mina complains of is actually “guilt” (Lahiri 63). The work of Tzuhsiu Beryl Chiu, however, stands out …
Traumas And Recovery In Takaya Natsuki's Fruits Basket, Vesper North
Traumas And Recovery In Takaya Natsuki's Fruits Basket, Vesper North
English (MA) Theses
This thesis examines the various traumas within Takaya Natsuki’s anime series Fruits Basket and how the act of transformation triggers the beginnings of recovery for numerous characters. Fruits Basket bears striking similarities to the French fairy tale Beauty and the Beast (as well as later adaptations) originated by Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve. Throughout, I draw parallels between the “Beauty and the Beast”-genre with Fruits Basket and how the anime expands upon shared themes, specifically trauma. Additionally, I analyse the birth of and recovery from traumas (caused by bullying, loss, abuse, and feelings of otherness) for “Beauty and the Beast” archetypes within …

Objective Crystallographic Symmetry Classifications Of A Noisy Crystal Pattern With Strong Fedorov-Type PseudoSymmetries And Its Optimal Image-Quality Enhancement, Peter Moeck
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Statistically sound crystallographic symmetry classifications are obtained with information-theory-based methods in the presence of approximately Gaussian distributed noise. A set of three synthetic patterns with strong Fedorov-type pseudosymmetries and varying amounts of noise serve as examples. Contrary to traditional crystallographic symmetry classifications with an image processing program such as CRISP, the classification process does not need to be supervised by a human being and is free of any subjectively set thresholds in the geometric model selection process. This enables crystallographic symmetry classification of digital images that are more or less periodic in two dimensions (2D), also known as crystal …

Spelling Intervention Strategies: What Works Best?, Cassidy Mentink
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
This capstone project will review the different intervention strategies that were implemented when working with six 2nd grade students who were identified as at-risk spellers in my clinical practice placement. The capstone project focused on three differentiated instructional strategies: phonetic, tactile, and digital. Of the three strategies, two were implemented by me and the other was already in place by my cooperating teacher. This capstone will look at the phonetic and tactile strategies I chose as interventions. I will discuss how the strategies worked, how each strategy was favored by the students, and what effect it had on the …

How Life During A Pandemic May Have Contributed To Homicide In Houston, Texas, Ciarra Hastings Blow
Journal of Family Strengths
This study offers an examination of a sample of 150 homicides in Houston, Texas in 2020 as described by local news sources. The purpose was to understand dynamics that may explain what appears to be an increase in domestic disputes that led to increases in homicides. This mixed method study utilized content analysis that included quantifying the patterns of concepts in the news reports to isolate racial, gender and location factors. Data are displayed in tables and figures to illustrate patterns and regression analyses indicate predictive relations. The study is important given the recent homicide increases during the COVID-19 pandemic, …

Pathology Research and Scholarship
Convalescent plasma, collected from donors who have recovered from a pathogen of interest, has been used to treat infectious diseases, particularly in times of outbreak, when alternative therapies were unavailable. The COVID-19 pandemic revived interest in the use of convalescent plasma. Large observational studies and clinical trials that were executed during the pandemic provided insight into how to use convalescent plasma, whereby high levels of antibodies against the pathogen of interest and administration early within the time course of the disease are critical for optimal therapeutic effect. Several studies have shown outpatient administration of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) to be …

However, with the emergence of the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant hospitalization rates among children aged 0-4 years increased by 10-fold by the middle of August 2021. We present a case of a 2-week-old previously healthy preterm, twin, male infant who developed severe COVID-19 pneumonia, subsequent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and an inflammatory syndrome requiring VA – ECMO support for 22 days. Methods: * A retrospective chart review was performed after successful weaning from ECMO. Parental permission for a case report was obtained in compliance with institutional standards. Results: …
T Cell Populations And Response To Chemotherapy In Human Leukemia, Sara Mcelroy, Fang Tao, John Szarejko, John M. Perry
T Cell Populations And Response To Chemotherapy In Human Leukemia, Sara Mcelroy, Fang Tao, John Szarejko, John M. Perry
Research at Children's Mercy Month 2022
Background
One important prognostic indicator in pediatric leukemia is minimal residual disease (MRD) detected at the end of induction chemotherapy. Detecting any level of MRD in the bone marrow (BM) at the end of induction (MRD+) is associated with increased risk of relapse and poorer overall survival compared to having no MRD detected (MRD-). Discovering differences between these patients, specifically in T cell subsets such as memory T cells and T memory stem cells (Tscm), could lead to new targets for cancer therapy and improvement in treatment for higher risk disease.
Objective
To determine potential differences in the frequency of …

All Dissertations
Cucurbit downy mildew (CDM), caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, is a major constraint on melon (Cucumis melo) production in the eastern United States, but P. cubensis populations infecting C. melo are not well characterized. Between 2019 and 2021, 248 P. cubensis isolates were collected from cultivars Halona and Hale’s Best Jumbo in ten states. Isolates were genotyped with nine microsatellites, and mating type and clade were determined. All isolates displayed an inverse mating type / clade relationship: 90.3% and 9.7% of the isolates were mating type A1 / Clade 2 and mating type A2 / Clade 1, respectively. …
